Allianz Annual Plans

I am looking at annual plan insurance mainly for medical coverage since Medicare doesn’t cover anyone outside of the US. I’ve narrowed it down to Allianz Executive Plan which includes $50,000 in medical coverage and $250.000. Medical evacuations. Just wondering if anyone here has any experience with Allianz and their annual plans, specifically with their medical coverage. The one I’m looking at includes $5000.00 trip cancellation which would be nice but the medical is the most important.

Any suggestions of other plans would also be appreciated.

There are not a lot of annual plans out there...  we have one through RoamRight.  However, the medical coverage is only $25K vs. the $50K you have with Allianz, so you might be better off with them.  For us, the $25K is fine because we are fortunate to have other medical coverage.  We were more interested in the trip cancellation coverage, which we insured for $10K per person, per trip.  We self-insure for any potential loss over that amount.  The nice thing about the RoamRight policy is that pre-existing conditions are included.

We recently chose GeoBlue Trekker.  It only covers medical and medical evacuation, but this is what you said you were primarily looking for.  For us, GeoBlue combined with our credit card's insurance covers most of our needs. GeoBlue is first payer and it covers pre-existing conditions.  For us, it was better better and cheaper coverage than the Allianz plan we looked at.  We have not had to use it yet, but we read a lot of positive reviews.

The only hole I am aware of with this approach is the credit card does not cover pre-existing conditions for family members not traveling with us.  This applies to the trip cancellation and trip interruption benefits.

GeoBlue Trekker Essential covers $50K medical and $250K evacuation.  The Trekker Choice plan covers $250K/$500K.  If you are over 70, I believe the maximum medical is limited to $100K.

You mention that your credit card "does not cover pre-existing conditions for family members not traveling with us".

That suggests that it covers pre-existing conditions for *you*...??

If so, which card is that?

The main thing stopping us from using charge card coverage for the lesser cost trips (or we'll exceed the max considerably) is that we don't want to risk having a claim denied because it's related to a pre-existing condition, or even argue about it with an insurer's specialists, etc.

Thanks!

Sorry GeezerCouple, no such luck - perhaps poor wording on my part.  Our credit card excludes trip cancellation/interruption benefits for all pre-existing conditions with a 60 day lookback period. This includes us and family members traveling with us or not traveling.  That said, we are not concerned about pre-existing conditions for us, but we are a little concerned about family members that might cause us to cancel or come back early. So the only hole for us is "pre-existing conditions for family members not traveling with us".

A few other thoughts:

  • If you have pre-existing conditions, GeoBlue does cover you for medical and medical evacuation
  • There are per trip and annual limits on the credit card insurance.  We can live with that coverage.  It may not work for others who take much more expensive trips.
  • No, I have not found any credit card insurance that excludes or waives coverage for pre-existing conditions.  If there is one, I would be interested.

  • 1 month later...

I just got off the phone with Allianz.  Very helpful Customer Service Rep.

She explained that the annual policy covers trips that cause you to go over 100 miles away from your home and back, but not over 45-90 days in length, depending on the level of coverage you get.

The Premier plan's cancellation coverage is costed by tier:  $2,000 per person up to $15,000.  The evacuation coverage is $500,000, and they pay first, which is what we want.  This means you don't pay and get reimbursed.  Also, if you have medical evacuation coverage with your primary insurance, Allianz coordinates the coverage to pay all of it up to $500k, and are ASSIGNED benefits by your insurance to pay Allianz back whatever your insurance covers.

For a 1 year policy with a $5,000 per person cancellation benefit the premium cost is $700.  If you use up the maximum of any of the benefits within the year, that benefit is not payable for future trips within the year, but the rest of the benefits that are not used are still available.

You cannot pay for an annual plan more than 60 prior to the start of the first trip, so the rep is calling me back in that timeframe to buy the insurance.

Oh, since it's a travel insurance, I'm pretty sure any travel credit card used (like my Chase Sapphire) gives double points for the purchase!
