ed the dog Posted November 8, 2018 #1 Share Posted November 8, 2018 We are thinking of doing a Northern Lights cruise on Oriana in February, can anyone who has done a similar cruise, advise if we will need any specialist clothing ? Obviously we will be taking warm padded coats, hats, gloves, scarfs etc. for any excursions and I assume that on board will be heated enough for normal shirts jumpers etc? Thank you
Host Sharon Posted November 8, 2018 #2 Share Posted November 8, 2018 You need good thermal underwear and a waterproof coat, and ideally waterproof trousers. Snow boots or waterproof walking boots over which I used Yaktrax for the icy conditions. Silk liner gloves are useful for photography too. On board is fine but out on deck and ashore it can be cold - it was -25C when I went on the Northern Lights excursion! One of my best ever cruises. happy v Posted November 8, 2018 #3 Share Posted November 8, 2018 Inside the ship is like being at home. However you will need thermals for outside and also good footwear. I took my walking boots and snow boots.

J.E.C Posted November 9, 2018 #5 Share Posted November 9, 2018 It may be worth looking at some cheap ski wear - I wet t Go outdoors and bought their ski set (this was last year and cost £60) but comprised of a base layer of thermals, jacket, trousers and ski socks, as I needed a decent warm winter jacket iI have had plenty of wear out of it. I also got silk gloves as liners and things like thermal snoods (as well as other thermal base layers) - the night we went out in search of the northern lights it was -25! I felt like the michealin man but was warm and cosy so who cares, Aldi and Lidl both do skiwear specials so non of it needs to cost a fortune On board we found it a bit chilly at times as you get an arctic blast each time a door is opened! I also got grippers for my walking boots and they were brilliant as they gave me confidence to walk in the snow and ice.
