Colon Panama excursions

We have a port day in Colon, Panama in December with MSC Divina. I am interested to hear from anyone who has done an independent excursion. What’s worth seeing in a day, who did you use and do you recommend? I have been in contact with MyFriendMario, prices are better than ship excursions but not sure which of his options would be best.

Concerning and independent tour of the Canal,  if you are looking at the Canal tour that is a partial transit of the Pacific Locks and Gaillard Cut.  That tour may have to be booked through the ship, quite often most of the available vessels that are used for this tour monopolized by the cruise ships.  Even if it were possible to book a private tour in this case it would not be a good idea to go with a private operator.  You will be a considerable distance from the ship and this tour running over the projected time is a very real possibility.

Other "Canal" tours that involve visiting the various locks would not present problems with a timely return to the ship.
