We are booked on a cruise out of New York next May and will be flying in the day before. What is the best place to stay that is not going to cost a fortune and is decent?

There is a wealth of information under the "Ports of Call" section of CC....or ask the question there for more responses.

It’s helpful to specify your cruise ship and exact date plus the airport you’re flying into plus your target budget and number of people. There are 3 New York airports and 3 New York cruise ports, so it’s hard to give any kind of good advice without more details.

There are two nyc ports then there is New Jersey, we visit nyc every May hotels rates are not too bad at that time I would look at midtown nyc near Times Square lots to do lots of restaurants and very close to Manhattan pier. We always stay at michealanglo but there are lots of cheaper hotels in area.

Michealanglo is my favorite hotel anywhere great location, smallest room is over 400 sq ft which is much larger than most, we love the king suite with a bath and a half. Nice bar in lobby , stayed there about ten times. Agree on TripAdvisor.

Sailing out of Manhattan in April...…..looking at The Kimpton Ink48, The Lexington and The Michealangelo…….

It depends what you want to do. Ink48 is right near the pier, whereas the other two are more central midtown. The Michalangelo, in particular is likely closest to sights you want to see. (Broadway/Times Square, Rockefeller Center, Fifth Ave, Central Park...) Of course they're all close enough to whatever you're interested in and getting around Manhattan is easy.
