In April and May next year I am going on a cruise which calls at the following ports, could anyone tell me if at any of the ports there are likely to be taxis offering tours to tourist sites, like we have found at other ports such as in Funchal?   Many thanks

Cadiz

Palma

Kerkira, Corfu

Kotor, Montenegro

Hvar, Croatia

Venice (don't know what happens here?)

Koper, Slovenia

Zadar, Croatia

Split, Croatia

Dubrovnik, Croatia

Valletta, Malta

Mahon, Menorca

Malaga, Spain

Leixoes, Portugal

Taxis are no good to you in Venice. You can see a lot in Venice on foot and you can also get ‘Vaporretto’ (water-Bus ) tickets. You really need to research how best to get around Venice and get a decent map (Pop-up map from Amazon is easy to use & cheap). Here is an excellent website https://europeforvisitors.com/venice/articles/vi-transport.htm

For Dubrovnik, it depends whether your ship is docking or anchoring. If it’s anchoring the tenders may well take you into the old town harbour. If this is the case you will be easily be able to explore the old town on foot. If the ship docks you can get a taxi to take you to the old town where you can walk around - there are no cars in the old town.

Zadar is very small - DIY on foot in 1-2 hours

Cadiz is small - DIY on foot for old town sights and if necessary take a cab to the beachfront and walk the any of the numerous beachside restaurants/bars - also search Spain Ports section of the boards for more info on Cadiz

Dubrovnik is small - DIY on foot and or join a fee walking tour which you can arrange on the fly just in front on the Pile gate or in book in advance on internet

Hvar is very small - not much to see, DIY on foot.  Walk up to castle on top of hill if in good shape -easier walk down - great views from top. Most people arrange for boat transport to a couple of the close by beaches or island tours

Kotor - very small - DIY or pre-arrange a guide for a small group or private walking tour. Again many people do the walk up along the medieval ramparts above the town - again if you are in good shape, don't have to walk all of it

Split - Too big to do most on foot - many things to see - probably could do a cab based tour (?).  You can see the Diocletian palace on your own or with a fee based walking guide. We went to small town of Trier and then coastal beach as part of an organized shore excursion

Venice - no taxi's - its impossible beacuse of the canals.  Join a paid or free walking tour, consider vaparetto rides around main island and for side trips to Bufano, Murano and Lido beachfont.

Palma - small DIY on foot unless you want to get around the entire island - then you'll need some form of organized transport

Lexioes - gate way to Oporto - that's where you want to head to.

Check out Spain Ports thread and serach for postings by Campolady  - numerous about Malaga - she lives in vicinity

Search this Board area for numerous posting on your cities in croatia, portugal - much has been already written

Search Italy Ports area of the Board for more ideas on Venice - again a million things have been already written

Many thanks to you all for your responses so far, all of which are very helpful.    I shall keep checking the Forums for further information as suggested but does anyone know specifically if at any of the above ports we could expect taxis waiting, usually with boards showing tourist sites away from the port, offering to take passengers on those tours?   We had this a lot in Madeira, Lanzarote and Gran Canaria, for instance and would prefer to do this rather than go on a Shore Tour.   Many thanks once again.

From ‘grnrab’ response, you will see that in many of the ports you do not need a taxi tour, just your own feet! For example, we walked around Cadiz and Split. However, other than Venice, you will most probably find some taxis waiting. I know I was glad we had pre-booked a taxi in Kotor as there were none there. Our driver said they weren’t working that day as the previous day had been a holiday so they all drank too much!

Really, you need to do more research and decide what you want to do in each port. Reading the shore excursions will guide you as to what the main sights are, so you can work this out. If you see ‘walking tours’ being offered, then you know you could get a map and walk around by yourself.

Then come back and ask individually about each port, where you can see that you will need to travel further afield. It is an awfully long list for people to deal with all at once!

Thank you for your response and the points you make are relevant - I do use the shore excursion guide to try and work out what sights are worth seeing but then like to know - in advance if possible - about the likelihood of taxi tours.

Yes, but the point is that you need to narrow down your list to the specific ports where you do actually need a taxi tour rather than your feet plus perhaps the ship’s shuttle bus into town. A shorter list will elicit more responses on taxi availability.
