Zaphod1962 Posted November 28, 2018 #151 Share Posted November 28, 2018 CCL stock is down 1.38% at the market close today. I wonder if the new policy has something to do with that. Carnival has made a lot of mistakes recently, Starting with the change in their loyalty program a few years ago. The last time we cruised on Carnival was on the Conquest right after the loyalty changes, and their "American table" menu in the MDR. We didn't care so much about the loyalty perks, but the food was not up to the standards we expected from Carnival, add to that the fact that the ship seemed dirty, the staff were apathetic, and the Captain chose to keep the ship in rain for the last 2 days of our cruise instead of requesting a route that would take us out of the foul weather. A Royal Caribbean ship was off our port side about a mile away, in sunshine the whole time, so I know an adjustment could have been made. We now sail with NCL. I'm gonna guess about 0% impact to the stock and captains can sail where they want/need to for comfort and safety.

Makes you wonder what their homes look and smell like. But again, there are folks that just don't care, unless it's their own backyard. A smokeless ashtray and just good manners would help eliminate all the blustering from the non-smokers. (I'm an ex-smoker. So I can see it from both sides.) Peolple being slobs on the ship covers a lot of people. you see it around the lido a lot in all areas. The smoking area up above lido have the tables. many times covered in bar glasses. Somebody from house keeping swings thru on occasion. Personally i dont think many non smokers would see any benefit to a smokeless ashtray , in the same way they see vaping as exactly the same as smoking. They have also explicitly stated that passengers may be disembarked for violating the policy, something that was only implied in the contract fine print. Not a change per se but definitely a clarification and emphasis. And the fine now is not only doubled but it is also per occurrence. So I'd say that the policy has changed enough to be considered new.

I am going to guess you are right. The markets don't care how passengers are treated, they care whether passengers are booking. Unless this change made a bunch of people cancel their cruises, it has nothing to do with the policy.

It's beyond rank. The amount of time and products to rid the home of smoke and smell cost the smoker in health and wallet. Curtains are trashed even dishes and so forth . Mask have to be worn at all times during prep work. Expensive , you betcha ! My late MIL was a very heavy smoker (and died from COPD), and her home was so disgusting, I couldn’t even be in there even if nobody was smoking at the time! The smell, the stain on everything—just disgusting. I am just amazed how smokers shout their “rights” are important in relation to their bad habit, but when someone’s “right” (to smoke) infringes on the health and safety of others, than their “right” doesn’t hold water. Frankly, I’m amazed ANYONE still smokes now days, with all the education out there on the devastating dangers of smoking and exposure to second hand smoke. To ignore those dangers is just stupidity. So, in support of Carnivals new policy, I feel it’s a big plus for everyone. It addresses both the fire hazards associated with smokers on balconies, plus the wear and tear on any bedding, carpets, walls in cabin (smoke destroys these items, and lingers forever), and most important, the health of its passengers. It simply is amazing what people will do to their bodies. Even though I doubt if this new Carnival rules makes any difference. To add to that, they dont even care about that either. Day by day they look at the swing, they run scared sometimes and i have found many times they will sell at a ripple in the water. its a great time to buy as long as Carnival is making a profit and they are. Zaphod1962 Posted November 30, 2018 #160 Share Posted November 30, 2018 (edited) I am not defending smokers breaking the rules. I was just making an observation. But if you notice, the ccl stock is still trending downwards today .LMaxwell, I realize that Captains make their decisions based on the comfort, and safety of their passengers, but on the trip I referenced, the Captain obviously did not consider either. He kept the ship in rough seas, in rain for 2 days, He could have requested to be routed just a mile or two east, and had smoother seas, and better weather for the passengers. Our previous sailing on the Liberty was during a Tropical storm in the Atlantic, and the Captain completely changed the route, kept the ship in fair weather, and we still were able to visit all the ports that were scheduled for that trip, just in a different order. The Captain of the Conquest at that time was apparently not concerned about the Comfort of his passengers, and the poor condition of the ship reflected that fact. Seadog & Sea Hag Posted November 30, 2018 #161 Share Posted November 30, 2018 The captain can change course whenever he chooses. He does not require permission at anytime.
blyle Posted November 30, 2018 #162 Share Posted November 30, 2018 I have reported on the first day....they came to room to see it and then went to the cabin. One time the people next to my in aft cabin were smoking. Cabin steward told them to stop and they did. The trick is to take care of it day 1 and then they are warned. Smoking below and next to you really sends the smell up. I was glad they took care of it and noted it on my survey.
riktishaw Posted December 24, 2018 #163 Share Posted December 24, 2018 We reported smoking on a balcony 2 rooms over. We saw security at their door a few days later and eventually we were comped our steakhouse dinner and all our pics (over $150 worth) as compensation. I don’t really care about vaping, but these people were smoking weed and flicking the ash over the railing. We only reported it the once, even though it happened several times. The front desk kept calling and leaving us notes that they would take care of it. This was on the Splendor.
Luckiestmanonearth Posted December 24, 2018 #164 Share Posted December 24, 2018 Don’t be fooled. This action is all about getting people to spend more time in the casino. That is what this is all about
blyle Posted December 24, 2018 #165 Share Posted December 24, 2018 I am a long time Carnival cruiser who remembers the Paradise non smoking ship days. The Paradise was too early for its time. I do know that Carnival reads its surveys and reacts to them. I actually believe the smoking complaints are enormous. Everyone had noticed it was getting worse. They realize we have other choices and are trying to get back some of the non smokers. Their ships sail full most of the time so I doubt they are hurting financially! They make a fortune on their casino program, they are raising tips to 18% so it only affects drinkers and not everyone. We just have to face it. Prices are going up even if you don't see it when you book. Nothing is free and yes they did have to change the loyalty program because some jerk in corporate did not realize that 10 3 day cruises a total of 30 days could make people Platinum and that was not the intention. I think they will institute another level between Platinum and Diamond because of the huge point spread. I have had them enforce the smoking rules 3 times and yes they did come to my room and look at where it was happening. They them took care of it!
The4Cruisers Posted December 25, 2018 #166 Share Posted December 25, 2018 (edited) Blah, blah, blah... Another toothless rule to appease the high maintenance complainers. CCL issued a big bark. Now are they really going to "bite" the customer? I doubt it. Maybe only in an extreme case, that's about it.
