Things to do in Copenhagen

We are doing the 14 day Baltic cruise in June 2019 and have already booked all our excursions thru Princess except for our stop in Copenhagen.  Was wondering if there is any shopping or places to eat close to the ship?  We looked at the excursions offered and aren't yet sure if we want to do that or just go about on our own.  Any suggestions or insights would be most appreciated.

The only attraction kind of close to the ship's pier is the little mermaid statue. From the shore you see her back, best viewed from a canal boat. At Nyhaven you can take canal tours. From Nyhaven there is a pedestrian walk going toward the direction of the town center. It's a fairly long walk from the pier to these areas, but it can be walked. If you are there at the right time you can see the changing of the guard parade going to and at the Royal Palace. There is a HOHO that stops at the pier. and there are taxis. Get yourself a tourist map, there is lots of information on line. No places to eat near the pier. The Pier is not really in the tourist or business area. For dining be ready for very high prices. Example, a coke will probably cost around US$6.

There are multiple ports.  Did you check where your ship will be docked?  see https://www.visitcopenhagen.com/cruisecopenhagen/copenhagen/transportation-and-cruise-terminals

If your ship is docked at Langelinie, it is a easy 30 minutes walk to Nyhavn where you can find many shops and places to eat.  It is another 20 minutes walk from there to the center of town.

We love taking free walking tours.  We get to learn about the local culture and important sights for little cost (tips only)  You may want to check them out on TripAdvisor.  https://www.tripadvisor.com/Attraction_Review-g189541-d3780935-Reviews-Copenhagen_Free_Walking_Tours-Copenhagen_Zealand.html We took the 3 hours classic tour and it was fantastic.  You have to find your way to the city hall where the tour starts.  If your ship is docked at Langelinie you can take the #26 bus for a 15 minutes bus ride to the city hall.  There were over a dozen people from our ship taking the bus to get to the tour in time.  Rick Steve's says you can pay the bus driver in Euros.  We attempted to do that and the bus driver just waved us through!  The tour ends at the Palace which is pretty close to Nyhavn.  Google maps has bus schedules for Copenhagen.

If your ship docks at Oceankaj, which the larger ships do, then you will not be near any shopping or dining areas.  You can take a cab (pricey) or take the bus—easy and cheap.  For details on taking the bus, see the “Wonderful Copenhagen” thread on this forum.

And I agree that the Free Walking Tour is an excellent use of your time (and tipping money for the guide.)  I also found Rosenberg Castle interesting and Rick Steves includes a good tour of it in his book.  It’s much more detailed than any of the signs in the castle.

My recommendation for a day in Copenhagen is a Royal Copenhagen walking tour Royal Copenhagen Walk:  Tour Copenhagen and visit all the Royal Sights:  Nyhavn (New Harbou), The Little Mermaid, Royal Guard Marching,  Amalienborg Royal Castle (Royal Castle)  and the Guard Change,  Rosenborg Castle, Strøget -(Pedestian Street), Runde tårn  (The Round Tower),  Christiansborg Castle (The Parliament and Old Stock Exchange -  a must during the day is a Canal Tour.  Video from Copenhagen Walk, Canal Tour and Guard Change at the Royal Palace.

We are also docking in Copenhagen; we are looking at three tours I find on 'shore excursions' on Viator:

1. Hop on hop off; which goes directly from Langelinie

2. Segway tour cruise; which also goes directly from Langelinie and which is guided

3. 'Wonderful Copenhagen' walking tour; you have to book private tour for start/stop at the cruise piers
