macmermaid Posted December 1, 2018 #1 Share Posted December 1, 2018 Hi, we are sailing on Harmony of the Seas, Royal Caribbean, on Dec 9th. My husband and I both use CPAPs. I've been reading that power strips and extension chords are not allowed. I am interpreting this to mean that the CPAPs must be plugged directly into an outlet. Are there power outlets on each side of the bed? I am betting if any, it is only on one side of the bed. Also, is it true that it is really the surge protection that is the issue and an extension chord should be ok? Maybe they would let us use one if packed with the CPAP machine? Or, will we need to request an extension chord once we get onboard. Thanks You
Rare 1025cruise Posted December 1, 2018 #2 Share Posted December 1, 2018 An extension cord will be provided. Plugs are across the room on the desk.

NantahalaCruiser Posted December 4, 2018 #4 Share Posted December 4, 2018 My wife and I both have CPAPs. I always ask the cruise line for one long extension cord to get from the receptacle at the desk over to the bed, then use a cheap 3-way and 6' extension cord packed in my CPAP bag to get the power over to the other CPAP. Have never had them confiscated; but if it ever happens, will not be out much and will merely ask for another cord from the cruise line.
Ashland Posted December 4, 2018 #5 Share Posted December 4, 2018 Harmony has an outlet on one side of the bed and the other outlets are across from the bed by the dresser/desk. You can either pre-arrange an extension cord and distilled water with special needs, have it added to your reservation or ask your cabin steward once onboard. jagsfan Posted December 4, 2018 #6 Share Posted December 4, 2018 I attach a regular but excellent condition extension cord to my CPAP. No one on any cruise line has ever blinked. The bulky industrial type extension cords the cruise lines provide are an accident waiting to happen, to me. Maybe they’ve gone to the lighter household ones, but I’d be surprised. dkjretired Posted December 4, 2018 #7 Share Posted December 4, 2018 Some cruise lines confiscate extensions, just the luck of who checks the luggage. Becomes a problem when you have a hotel safe before or after.
cb at sea Posted December 5, 2018 #8 Share Posted December 5, 2018 Extension cords are fine, but those with SURGE protectors are NOT fine and will be confiscated. Just bring a normal extension cord. A CPAP doesn't draw much power.

Both Royal Caribbean and Celebrity specifically have extension cords in their list of prohibited items. I don't know about other lines but I do know that people have reported back on the Celebrity board that they have had them confiscated. From the Royal Caribbean web site, Celebrity has the same wording. Prohibited items: Firearms & Ammunition, including realistic replicas. Sharp Objects, including all knives and scissors. (Note: Personal grooming items such as safety razors are allowed. Scissors with blade length less than 4 inches are allowed.) Illegal Drugs & Substances Candles, Incense, Coffee Makers, Clothes Irons, Travel Steamers & Hot Plates. (Items that generate heat or produce an open flame. This includes heating pads, clothing irons, hotplates, candles, incense and any other item that may create a fire hazard. NOTE: The only exception to this policy are curling irons and hair straighteners. Matches and normal lighteners are allowed onboard. However ""torch lighters"" and novelty lighters that look like guns are not allowed onboard. Torch lighters emit a powerful concentrated flame, and therefore are prohibited. Hoverboards Illegal Drugs Martial Arts, Self Defense, and Sports Gear, including handcuffs, pepper spray, night sticks. Flammable Liquids and Explosives, including lighter fluid and fireworks. Hookahs & Water Hookah Pipes. HAM Radios Baby Monitors Electrical Extension Cords Dangerous Chemicals, including bleach and paint. Alcoholic Beverages (Note: On boarding day, each stateroom may bring up to two 750 ml bottles of wine or champagne. Guests who purchase alcohol bottles onboard, in a port-of-call, or bring more than the two permitted bottles on boarding day, will have their items safely stored by the ship. These bottles will be returned on the last day onboard for enjoyment once home. Alcoholic beverages seized on embarkation day will not be returned.) jagsfan Posted December 5, 2018 #11 Share Posted December 5, 2018 I’d like to know why anyone would bring one. Cruise ship cabins are kind of close quarters.

jagsfan Posted December 6, 2018 #15 Share Posted December 6, 2018 No, someone posted Baby Monitors with a question mark, because it’s on RCI’s forbidden list and I was wondering why anyone would bring one. I always bring an extension cord, on Princess and on RCI. It’s a must.

Imagine the conversation at home “ honey, did you pack the grenades.”
jagsfan Posted December 7, 2018 #17 Share Posted December 7, 2018 I always wonder what prompted notices forbidding something. Years ago, all of our offices received a memo that stated that effective immediately, excessive drinking is not allowed on company time. 😳

Connecting cabins and or when parents want to sit out on the balcony with the slider shut while their little one naps...Those are usually the reason they would want to bring one and ask about them.
leaveitallbehind Posted December 7, 2018 #19 Share Posted December 7, 2018 If you contact RCI special needs department through customer service in advance with your situation they will have the necessary equipment in your stateroom for you. Sue Do-Over Posted December 24, 2018 #21 Share Posted December 24, 2018 We have had normal interior extension cords confiscated (the brown 6-foot kind), but not every time. When it DID get taken, the room steward replaced it with a 25-foot industrial orange one, that only allowed one item to be plugged in at a time. That particular steward was also absolutely diligent about unplugging electronics (phone, tablet)… and even my glucose monitor which charges via USB. If you're packing a cord, suggest you bring a new one that still has the safety-rating label, AND that you unplug your CPAP machines while you're out of the cabin to reduce the possibility of the steward 'having' to remove it. Just last month on the NCL Epic, I experienced a bout of kidney stones, and was curled up with a heating pad when the steward came to clean the room. Not only did he NOT hassle me about it, after he swapped out the towels and freshened the bathroom, he offered to 'fix the bed'. He smoothed the sheets, fluffed the pillows, and centered the heating pad... and practically tucked me back in. Yeah, he got an extra tip that week!
