A few port questions...

We will be leaving soon and we are trying to tie up a few loose ends.  We will be on Orion, so there's not a lot of information out there.

 

1) Rotorua Geothermal...We want to see the geothermal on our own, not on an excursion.  We do not want to include other activities, just geothermal.  We do not want to rent a car.  Would it work to get a taxi to and from that area?  Is there any other type of transportation?

 

2)Dunedin...can we walk from port and around Mt.Cargill on our own?  Anything else to do that we can walk to. We have an excursion, but time where we can do something on our own as well.

 

3)Tasmania...We have an excursion, but a little extra time left over. Anything we can do we can walk to? 

 

4) Melbourne...Again we have an excursion, but wondered if we can walk to one of the gardens, like the Royal Botanical Garden? If not, how hard would it be to grab a taxi to there? 

 

5) In Auckland, Pink Beach, Shakespear Park, there are some very interesting rock formations we would love to see.  Does anyone know this area? We will be staying at the wharf, how far is that from there?  Can it be seen all the time, or are there tide issues?

1) try arrow tours if they don’t do a private tour it will be a small group 4-6

2)pretty sure there’s a little museum in port chalmers still.

3)presuming it’s Hobart,there’s the Hobart museum,which is free and very interesting.one interesting thing is one of Jim Bowie’s knifes from the Alamo in there and a very interesting story how it got there. 

Mawsons hut,a Antartica museum or presentation.

4) catch a taxi or tram to the Botanical gardens and see Cooks cottage.captain James Cooks house that was moved from England.

You won't find the Cook Cottage in the Botanical Gardens, they are in the Fitzroy Gardens which are quite easy to get to  -  either the tram from Station Pier to Spring Street and walk through to the gardens or take a taxi. The Botanical Gardens are also very close to the CBD (central business area).

 

Tauranga - My friend caught a Hop On Hop Off (HOHO) bus to Rotorua. Perhaps Google it.

 

If you are in Hobart, explore around the area surrounding the pier - there are some beautiful old buildings. Buy fish and chips and sit and enjoy the view of the Derwent River.

Rotorau is about 40miles from where your ship docks, about an hour by car; public transport would be slower. Taxi or Uber is an option but rather expensive. I would try for small group tour to ensure you get back before the ship leaves.
