Recommended Posts

Hey all,

It's finally time to get this live review going. (I hope, cruise critic seems to be very sketchy right now) We have 13 of us coming from San Diego and New Jersey, and since of us from San Diego are driving in!

We start tomorrow morning (Wednesday) and will arrive in Galveston on Friday afternoon.

Here we are, you've seen us before!

So yes we leave tomorrow at 7am, this was supposed to be an easy drive, a lil Cali, easy drive AZ, NM and TX. It was until we looked at the forecast for Las Cruces, NM where we'll be staying tomorrow night, it's supposed to snow! No!!! Dont they know we're from Socal, no snow, barley any rain and we have to drive in snow, ughhhhh.  I'm sure it will be ok, says 1 inch or less, wish us luck. I will be trying to post as we head East but in Will be doing most of the driving so I'll do my best. Here is our intended itinerary. Screenshot_20190101-212014_Maps.thumb.jpg.c78b0e2b78b24e0cd15ad4453f2251b2.jpg

Liberty will be a new ship for us, we've been on the Independence as well many other ships. This itinerary is Roatan, Belize and Cozumel. We've been to all 3 ports but Roatan and Belize only once.

Roatan we have chartered a large catamaran from Radical Adventures. Really looking forward to this.

Belize we have nothing planned.

Cozumel we planning on doing a day pass to a Secrets resort. There will be 8 ships in Port with 29,000 pax so I'm glad we're not staying in town.

Did you book the Day Pass through the hotel or another site?  Do you have info on it?  Looks spectacular!

I don't know if it's my devices or cruise critic but I'm having a heck of a time connecting. But any way, we have made it to Las Cruces as planned. 11 hours total, 10 driving with an hour lunch thrown in. Actually not a bad drive, pretty uneventful except it did start snowing about an hour before Las Cruces and snowed til we got to the hotel. We actually had snow on the ground all the way from East Tucson to Las Cruces even tho it was nice and sunny but cold. I was surprised, I've never seen snow in Tucson.

Here are a couple pics from the drive, the 1st is the price I paid for gas at our local station, I meant too take pics at each fill up to see the difference in price but of course I forgot.  So I paid $3.269 back in San Diego, $2.85 in Gila Bend, Az (we actually saw it at $2.499 a few miles before) then $2.219 in Deming, NM and as we pulled into Las Cruces, $1.999, we're so jealous! 20190102_063847.thumb.jpg.045df4a324a7f677cc7674b6f9c1ccbd.jpg

Sand dunes east of San Diego, lots of motorized toys playing out there.

And just a couple welcome signs from our trek East.

and the snow!

and if course when we got to Las Cruces we had to get a local burger (well at least Texas local) Whataburger!

That's it for tonight, more tomorrow as we head East to San Antonio.

Tonight is Holiday inn Express, tomorrow the Omni on the Riverwalk. 9 hours tomorrow

I booked it direct, I think the best way is to email the hotel concierge. I received a couple discounts for affiliations but the normal rate is $127 for a day pass.  I'll let you know if it's worth the $127. 🙂

Following. . .

I have considered driving to California from Houston.  Then I look at the long endless freeway.  IDK  Looking forward to your thoughts on that looong drive.

It looks like you have a fun vacation planned!

Haha, this is our second time to drive to Galveston for a cruise, the 1st time a couple years ago I drove straight through, no stopping to sleep. I was crazy. We like road trips so for us it's no big deal.  I also have a 35ft motorhome that we take on trips, so doing this in a car is easy 😁

Thanks for the live report.

Would like to hear your thoughts on Radical Adventures. We have a group of us sailing on the Symphony next January B2B and will be stopping in Roatan. We love a good Catameran day!

Cheers

You are going to love Radical Adventures!  Did them our last family cruise and it was truly a memorable experience.  The drive to the catamaran is very long but you quickly forget about that.  Extremely friendly and helpful crew.  Have fun.

It's not you. Cruise Critic has been flaky over the holiday week.

Now that everyone has shaken off their end-of-year slumber, hopefully things return to normal.

Enjoy your cruise. Liberty is one of my favorite ships.

I once drove from Orlando to Houston straight through - 16 hours I think - as the only driver. My legs and feet were swollen when we got home.  I don't know how you made that drive.  What worries me is having car trouble when the nearest town is hours away.  At least going east from here, you pass through many towns and cities.

You will love the gas prices in Houston! I hope you are able to enjoy the Riverwalk. Love the pictures!!

We are going to be on the same cruise as well. Also from SoCal (OC), flying in on Saturday to Houston. Looks like we might get a lot of tropical rain but nothing we can do about that.

Maybe we will bump into each other. I won't be following CruiseCritic after we depart but looking forward to what you think as well.

Welcome to the Alamo City. 🙋🏿‍♂️ Staying on the river walk should be great. The weather today and tomorrow is great as well. The holiday lights are still up and we have some of the lowest gas prices in the State.

Enjoy your stay. :classic_biggrin:

Good morning from San Antonio! What a great City. The Riverwalk is very cool. We're staying at the Omni La  Mansion' right on the river. Got this at the last second for $99 a night. Usually when I looked it was $179 for the cheapest rooms, So I cancelled the Holiday inn and booked here. Very nice, boutique'ee type hotel, literally right on the water and in the middle of it all. San Antonio is one of our favorites, but I will admit to being disappointed by what surrounds the Alamo!

Enjoy your trip on the Liberty.  We will be back for a B2B starting March 17th and it will be our 4th and 5th weeks on the LOS.  Enjoy everything!
