Waitmo and Hobbiton in One Day?

Is it reasonable to see both Waitmo and Hobbiton in one day from the Tauranga port? I have booked a private tour to do this but am having second thoughts. Maybe Hobbiton from Tauranga and Waitmo from Auckland? Thanks.

We just did this on December 9th.  It was great!  We departed from port at 0830 and stopped first at Hobbiton.  Next we stopped for a great lunch (take away to save time) at a small town on the way to the Waitomo Glowworm Caves.  We finished the caves,  returned to port at around 1630, and even asked our guide to drop us off at the base of  Mt. Maunganui so that we could hike up to the top for the beautiful views.  I definitely recommend this over the long trip from Auckland.

We are doing both on a day trip from Auckland in the days prior to our cruise. The voyage does stop in Tauranga but we booked the tour for less than the ships tour and we can avoid being quite so rushed while in port. It is a long day from the city though.
