How do we communicate with each other on a cruise?

For years, my husband and I have communicated with each other on board ship with walkie talkies. These are broken and old now, of course, so am asking if anyone iknows how to communicate? I have seen some texting each other on cellphones, but not sure if that will work? Is there any way nowadays to communicate?

Thanks

Hubby and don't stay together all the time....but we do tell each other where we're going, and for "about" how long..That way, we have an idea of where to find the other, if we need to before our next meal or activity.  Talking works really well.  For instance, I'll be at the pool for the next couple hours....he's headed to the casino and will be there (if he's getting lucky with the cards) and if he's not winning, he'll come and look for me at the pool....he knows my preferred location.  If I leave the pool, I'm headed back to the cabin....next meal isn't THAT far away....so we will meet there if all else fails!

It's really not that hard.

There is the telephone in the room where you can leave messages, Notes, telling each other your plans, and we have cruised together so long that we know each others habits and will be back at the cabin to get ready for cocktail hour by 4.30pm each day. Some ships have a messenger app that is free although you will both need a device.

Personally, I find the use by others of walkie-talkies and phones onboard  to be a big negative.  Invariably, they are in speaker mode with the volume turned up.  And then folks are shouting back their replies.  Quite inconsiderate to others, IMO.

To “Communicate”  involves listening - just share plans, pay attention to what your husband says , and hope he pays attention to you when discussing plans - it is not that  hard—— and it does not require other passengers having to listen to repeated “WHERE” and “WHEN” shouted into marginally functioning devices.

Its funny, but despite having spent far more then 1000 days on many cruises....DW and I have never had a communication problem on a ship.  If we go our own ways we simply agree where to meet around a certain time or just manage to fine each other since we know each other's habits.

Nor us.  Frankly I cannot imagine carrying around a walkie talkie, let alone using one..  Somehow we have always managed to work this out without any issues.

Nor would either of us walk around with our cell phones.  We have either not brought them along or they are locked in our safe until we disembark.

I agree, but for some they have 3rd or 4th parties also in tow.

Sounds like us (though we're probably under 100 days). She knows I'll be at trivia; I know she'll be swimming. And we know when and where we'll meet. On shore, we'll be together basically because I have no sense of direction.

Recently off a 29-day b2b. Shortly before we left, a software upgrade to our Apple Watches added a walkie-talkie function. We tried it at home, verified it worked. During our 6 weeks travel away from home, including that 29 days onboard, we never had any reason to use that function. Talking to one another occasionally really helps.

Would the watches work without internet though?

Probably. They would require WiFi, but that is onboard the ship. Internet is external. So with an internet account, I get connection from x device to the server to the outside world. But I also get connection to the internal WiFi and can communicate over wifi to any other privileged device onboard... E.g., with my iPad or iPhone, I can Airdrop stuff to my wife’s phone even when she is across the ship. Because she has WiFi privileges as I do. Even if neither of us is then logged onto the external Internet...
