No charge card accepted?  Truly "cash only" for a significant sum could cause some difficulties, not to mention during such a stressful situation already!

And the claim that she wasn't able to contact her credit card company for assistance is suspect. She had a credit limit of $10,000, which wasn't enough to cover the expenses. The hospital even tried to run the $25,000 through, but it was denied and a credit hold was placed on the account due to the appearance of fraud. She claims there was no way to request an increase to her credit limit or have the hold removed at 2:00 am in the morning. All companies I have had credit cards with have 24 hour domestic and international phone numbers to call for assistance.

Travel insurance is a daunting subject. My suspicion has long been that many people avoid it simply because they get overwhelmed almost immediately when they start digging into it.

The best advice I can think to offer new cruisers (or travelers in general) is to contact one of the several insurance brokers out there and get them working on your behalf. They will explain the intricacies of this very, very odd type of insurance to you.

Of those who are out there, my go to has long been Steve at the  Trip Insurance Store (.com). Very patient, understanding and knowledgeable guy. But if not Steve, talk to SOMEONE.

Travel insurance can definitely get complicated.  Until you get comfortable with the terms and conditions, I think it's better to rely on travel insurance specialists rather than travel agents or cruise line reps.  As you get older, you realize that a lot of things can go wrong on an overseas trip and the right insurance might turn out to be a life-saver.

I would not travel without cruise insurance. I book thru a specialist. If I have to see ship dr. I pay and get full reimburse. If something happens off the ship the company pays direct. Same for airlift. Peace of mind.
