latserrof Posted January 25, 2019 #1 Share Posted January 25, 2019 Ahoy mateys! We're on the 4/21 21-day HAL Nieuw Statendam TA/Fjords from Ft. Lauderdale to Amsterdam, and we're considering adding another leg immediately thereafter; the choices -- both 14 days RT Amsterdam departing 5/12 -- are either: 1. Remain aboard the Nieuw Statendam to Baltic/Russia, or 2 Switch to the Costa Mediterreanea to the British Isles The two prices are about the same. We're currently scheduled to do the Baltic/Russia TA on the NCL Getaway in fall 2019, so the British Isles are a bit more appealing, but we've never cruised Costa and are a bit concerned about the 'international' flavor and some of the reviews. Any thoughts, fellow cruisers?
tenpin Posted January 25, 2019 #2 Share Posted January 25, 2019 As a true Costa lover I am afraid it would be HAL every time we us, even if it was a bit dearer, the Mediterranea is a lovely ship but could not compare with the Statendam, we love the HA line but have not been for a few years as itineraries have not been our first choice whereas Costa has proved great value for us over the whole year as we no longer can do long haul flights & the perks from Costa outweighed most other lines. latserrof Posted January 25, 2019 Author #3 Share Posted January 25, 2019 Thanks! Anyone else please?
Dancer Bob Posted January 27, 2019 #4 Share Posted January 27, 2019 If you can tolerate one of HAL's floating mausoleums, I strongly recommend against Costa. They about as different as two cruise lines can be.
SeaTheW0rld Posted February 3, 2019 #5 Share Posted February 3, 2019 It's all about the itinerary, for me. If you're a bit adventurous, try Costa. If you like the quiet, country-club atmosphere of HAL, Costa might not be a good choice. I always compare Costa to Carnival. It might be better to try Costa on a shorter cruise. Fourteen days is a long time to not like something.
latserrof Posted February 4, 2019 Author #6 Share Posted February 4, 2019 Thanks to all who offered input re: Costa (Mediterranea to British Isles) vs. HAL (New Statendam to Baltic/Russia), both RT Amsterdam. For better or worse, we've decided on the safer bet this time: remain aboard HAL and their newest ship.
maryann2 Posted February 4, 2019 #7 Share Posted February 4, 2019 You will find the weather in May for Baltics - Russia much better than October. Also longer days.
gkbiiii Posted February 24, 2019 #8 Share Posted February 24, 2019 I might suggest Celebrity as a nice change for Europe or MSC Yacht Club.
