No Wellwishers beer or liquor delivery...

Just called Wellwishers this morning and was told that NCL are no longer allowing them to deliver beer or liquor to NCL ships, although wine delivery is still possible.

Among the cruiselines, NCL certainly takes the prize as the best 'enforcer' of the 'no bringing alcohol on board' rule! :(

And why wouldn't they be? Especially considering they offer the opportunity for you to order a bar setup, or order wine directly through them?

Ordering cases of beer and proudly posting the intent to drink them pool side. Like any business they will react when customers try and reach deep into their pockets. Look at the changes in the return policy at major retailers.

 

It only takes a few to ruin things for all of us.

Pepper, and so does every other cruiseline.

It was a matter of choice more than pricing - I could get brands of beer at Wellwishers that we could not get on the ship.

Countercast - I do agree that the brand choices are limited, which can be frustrating.

 

As shoreguy pointed out, it was the few who have abused the system so thoroughly, that ruined it for the many who simply would seek an option not available through traditional methods. :(

At least NCL has Friends of Bill W. meetings scheduled daily, for those going through "favorite brand" or "can't afford it" withdrawal.

It's a known fact that NCL reads these boards, but I doubt that alone was to blame, I'm sure it was the higher than normal deliveries to the NCL ships that truely drove them to this decision.

I have ordered alcohol delivery through Just because.. in the past. Most times we cruise around DH's b-day and it is a gift I know will get used. He prefers Becks dark and most ships don't carry it. I would pay a fee for delivery to the ship I think it was $10 a case. Wouldn't that count as a corkage fee? NCL charges the company for allowing them to deliver to the line and they would pass that fee on to us.

DH is a Vegetarian and there are many alcoholic drinks that are not, mostly wine and beer. I will miss this service if the cruiselines are buckling down. We will be on the Jewel in April (DH's b-day) and if we can't have alcohol delivered I wonder if we will have as much fun? It was nice to be able to have a "private" party in our cabin, as opposed to sitting in a bar or casino all night. ;)

That is in fact the tangible proof of the magnitude of the intended abuse. Every week for years Wellwishers shows up with some bottles of wine, flowers, snacks, a nice bottle of scotch, and perhaps a few six packs.

 

Suddenly they back up the truck in Houston and Miami with baskets full of cases of beer and multiple bottles of booze. No choice shut it down before it explodes.:(

NCL is also at fault here. The prices charged for their in-room setup was outrageous. I paid it because my dh said he didn't want to be embarrassed by having to go to "the room" if we smuggled. So we were charged $43 for a bottle of rum. In their gift shop they were selling the same bottle for $9.95. I doubt they were giving the bottle away....they were still making a substantial profit.!

 

If people know they can order onboard for a fair price they will not go searching for other means.

That $30 profit is really going to improve the bottom line, $6 for 1 oz now that is margin - $204 for the same liter - The $43 is done only as a courtesy not as a profit improvemt program - it in fact hurts the bottom line.

I fear that they may stop the bar setup program. They do make a profit on it. If the drinks get any more expensive, they will lose money. I know that I will not buy as much, mostly on principle.

Hubby rarely drinks anything but tonic water---with nothing except maybe some ice.

I don't drink because I'm diabetic.

NCL nor any other line makes $ off us for booze but I can tell you the drinks on the supposedly "uppity" Celebrity Cruise line....are cheaper.

This is rediculous. If I read this post before paying for my cruise, I would NOT have decided on NCL. While some of you might complain about the "golden goose" this was not a loophole, but was an authorized method.

 

I believe we are at a crossroads for NCL. If they continue down this path they will be alienating those who they so desperately want, the masses.

 

I will have a great time on my trip on the jewel, where I spend little to no money on alcohol and other items because they are too expensive. I think many people here will do the same. NCL could make more money by lowering the costs and/or opening more reasonable options for purchases. Its a fine balancing act between cost and quantity, and this has pushed it beyond the edge.

Not sure what is rediculous- If you are not going to spend any money onboard NCL may want you to move on. The margin is not in your cruise fare but on the money you spend onboard.
