Lanyards are for losers...

We are loyal X cruisers, but we are  looking at other options  (Princess, NCL, HAL, RCI) for our Alaska cruise next summer. Whilst perusing the boards looking for information, I happened upon a few threads, mainly from HAL and Princess cruisers, discussing the abomination that is known as lanyard wearing. Apparently for some, lanyards are tacky and distasteful and scream newbie. Apparently one should keep their seapass (or whatever they call it) hidden away on one's pocket or wallet or bag. I was LOL reading the comments. Is this really a thing? I have never given a thought to lanyard vs non-lanyard as something that should be the subject of debate, but I guess it is. I see people on X with lanyards and without, I never give it second thought.

That is extreme snobbism... Who cares? As long as they are not keeping their cards in their underwear/bras and dive into them to retrieve it when asked 😉

Who cares either way but I know I don’t like a lanyard rubbing on my deck all day. I keep my card in my pocket or back pack.

This is just a stupid thread!  My husband is in a chair and can't be reaching into his pocket every time he needs his card!  Some people are careless and loose their cards.  What difference does it make.  We are not "newbies" in any sense of the word but you really have to think hard about why those people wear lanyards.  What a foolish thought to even have

Yes these threads pop up every so often.  I find it amusing  but sad how some people are judgemental about how someone else decides to carry their ship card.

 

Me and my wife are long time cruisers.  She chooses to go the lanyard route while I don't.  The reason why I do not, is that I usually have a pocket shirt or pants available.

 

If someone decides to use a lanyard as it most convient for THEIR needs, then why should I second guess them.

To each their own, I suppose.  It makes sense if you are wearing attire without pockets. Since I am always wearing pants or shorts, I just keep it in my pocket. People should do whatever they're comfortable with - pocket, wristband, or lanyard.

I don't use one, but DW sometimes does. Always puts the card back to front. Don't the shops sell them? Obviously Celebrity finds them proper to use and there is a consumer base that buys them. Aren't we all so lucky to be able to cruise!

Now Speedos, that's another story.

A lanyard is just another way to flash your status if you are cruising in something other than steerage.

if you simply turn the Seapass Card to hide your status or cabin category yo keep people who stare at that part of the anatomy guessing. Some will think that you are really high status and trying to hide it. Some will think your trying to hide your low status. Some might think that you just put it in the wrong way. Just think of the possibilities.

A backward card is like a Bikini; Revealing some detail, but hiding the essentials.

I have my wallet on a chain (Attached to my belt.)

 

my Sea Pass card  is attached to my wallet with one of those retractable leash holders.  

 

As an added safety measure, I have a macrame lanyard (that I made at summer camp) to hold it all together.

OK. I'm a loser. Meaning I'd lose my SeaPass within a few minutes if it wasn't attached to a lanyard. I bought one of those multi-function black rhinestone lanyards with a retractable reel that detaches and can clip inside my purse or a pocket. It's perfect for the casino. There are vendors inside the cruise terminal who sell all sorts of lanyards. It also had a badge holder, which I lost 😉  because I lose things. While at the pool, I keep my SeaPass in my beach bag - the lanyard makes it easier to find. In the evening, I use the reel inside my purse.  My husband wears a Chicago Bears lanyard around his neck or belt loop and tucks the card inside a pocket. He's met many people from Chicago because of that lanyard, who are surprised that he is from Connecticut and love the Bears. I don't care if people, who will likely never see again, think our lanyards are tacky.

I could wear my last Sign and Sail Carnival card, and flaunt my Gold status on X, Hal, and Princess.

I use a lanyard when I (1) don't have pockets at all or pockets deep enough to not have the card easily slide out (truly a problem with clothing for women) and (2) don't want to carry around a bag or purse just to put my card in it.  Most likely those who judge others wearing a lanyard would also judge if I wore cargo shorts in order to securely carry my card - who cares how people carry their cards! To each their own and what works for them! I'm a lanyard person and husband puts his in his pocket.

I respect everyone choice to either use a lanyard or stow their card in other ways.   I personally just keep it in my pocket.   Having said that my spouse chastises me all the time about the number of cards I've somehow lost.   Maybe I should wear mine.  

 

By the number of post made by the OP one must wonder -  Who's the pot that calls the kettle black.

Now I'm curious if Equinox cabin door locks are RFID or Mag Stripe?

 

If RFID, the cards would open the door, even if inside plastic .  If Mag Stripe, the cards have to be removed from the plastic case attached to lanyard each time tow swipe in.

 

Who knows the answer?

I wear a lanyard every day at work, identifying who I am and my right to be in that building, I really don't want to wear one on holiday - If I had the option I wouldn't wear one at work.  Other than when I'm using it to purchase something , leave the ship, return or when required to by Celebrity I would prefer to keep information like my name, status  etc private.

 

Lots of custom and practice I see on cruise ships I can't fathom out - decorating your cabin doors for example.

On our first cruise my wife and I were like ‘yikes’ really?  Sooooo declasse...Then, on our last cruise with children, I don’t know how many times I went looking for cards, hanging up pants only to have 4 cards tumble out across the deck.  Panicking that our cards would fall out of my shorts when we went ashore....

 

Suffice to say, I bought two lanyards for this trip.

These practices are only on mass market lines. We have ever seen them on premium or luxury lines except for the occasional newbie. Hope it stays that way....
