Geiranger Question

On the day we are in port, we only have enough time to do either the fjordcruise or a bus excursion to the lookout due to their timetables. Would we see mainly the same things on the sail in and out as the fjord cruise? Are there any smaller tour companies that do a fjord cruise besides the RIB boats and the one large tour boat?

Thanks

Exact the same fjord views and water. I’ll defiantly recommend a tour to the view points with Fjord views from the top of the mountains.

I will be in Hellesylt/Geiranger on July 24 on the 350 passenger Aegean Odyssey. Most excursions are included, but here we have an optional (extra cost) option from Hellesylt to Geiranger, or an excursion from Geiranger. The timing is a stop a 10 am in Hellesylt to disembark passengers going overland, then the ship continues to Geiranger for a 12 noon stop. We depart at 6 pm.

The optional excursion is:

HELLESYLT TO GEIRANGER AND JOSTEDALSBREEN PARK

A tale of two villages, this relaxing tour crosses the UNESCO World Heritage region of Sunnmøre, taking you through some of the most spectacular scenery in the world to meet Aegean Odyssey in Geiranger.

Begin in the delightfully picturesque village of Hellesylt and pass the Hellesyltfossen waterfall, where Henrik Ibsen was inspired to write his drama, ‘Brand’. See the deepest lake in Europe, the picturesque Hornindalsvatnt. Surrounded by rugged mountains, no glacial streams drain into it directly (the lake is mostly maintained by melting snow) resulting in an exceptional clarity.

Explore the pretty little waterside village of Styrn at leisure, then enjoy a short informative film at the nearby Jostedalsbreen National Park Centre and a guided tour of the botanical garden, followed by a lunch of mushroom soup, steamed salmon and ice cream with berry sauce at the Hjelle Hotel, facing Oppstrynsvatn lake.

Continuing to the summit of Mount Dalsnibba, some 4,843ft above sea level, stop at the “invisible” viewing platform that was opened here in 2016 to create the illusion of floating, although you will be perfectly safe as you step out into space to look down at the Geirangerfjord far below and across towards the Blåbreen glacier.

Descending along the winding Nibbevegen road, a final stop will be made at the Flydalsjuvet viewpoint, where a very special wood and stone “Fjordsetet” (Fjord Seat) was inaugurated by Queen Sonja of Norway in 2003. From here you may even be able to see Aegean Odyssey in the Geirangerfjord, as she arrives to collect you just a few miles to the east.

or

UNESCO GEIRANGER

Leaving the village of Geiranger, the tour starts by heading through the Flydal Valley to reach Lake Djupvatn, which is usually beginning to thaw by the end of June, gradually revealing blue waters below. Following the mountain road, you will arrive at the summit of Mount Dalsnibba, approximately 4,843ft above sea level, with views of the Blåfjell glacier and Geirangerfjord far below. This beautiful location has been rated the world’s number one natural heritage site by the National Geographic Society, alongside the Nærøyfjord.

On the way back to Geiranger, this scenic drive also takes in the Flydalsjuvet viewpoint, for more stunning views over Geiranger and Geirangerfjord from a different perspective. The site is split into two levels, with a gangway running between plateaus. On the lower you will be able to recline for a moment in the wood and stone “Fjordsetet” (the Fjord Seat) installation, which was inaugurated by Queen Sonja of Norway in 2003 and has been perfectly positioned for the ultimate view across the Geirangerfjord.

If I take the all day excursion I will miss sailing from Hellesylt to Geiranger, but we will be sailing out the same way.

Any advice on these choices would be appreciated.
