Okay, Jackie, seriously now...we have GOT to sail with you guys sometime soon.  Y'all know how to do it right!!

 

On our Voyager cruise last month, our butler did up our cabin for my wife's birthday but apparently there's just a LOT more you can do in a huge cabin than there is in our tiny little PH C!  LOL!!  That looks like the Best.  Birthday.  EVER!

 

I'm so happy you guys are having such a nice cruise.

What a wonderful birthday celebration.  Happy Birthday Dennis!

 

Regardless of one's history with Regent, it seems to go all out for guest celebrations.  I recently celebrated a bday aboard Voyager, and in addition to the many things Regent did to make my day special... our butler made an appearance at our dinner table to make sure all was well, and again bestow birthday wishes.   This was our second Regent cruise.

 

Regent is a class act, for sure.

Agreed!  On my wife's birthday, they decorated our suite and brought champagne, our butler escorted us to Prime 7, the maître d' and our butler took us to our table, and to top it off, Davor, the GM, stopped by our table on his way out and sang 'Happy Birthday' to my wife (the SpongeBob version, apparently), kissed her on the cheek and wished her a fantastic day.

 

It really is a team effort, isn't it?

I noticed at breakfast the other day that the packet of granola was “low fat” but on reading the ingredients, found an incredible amount of sugar had been substituted.  Yesterday’s room service breakfast included a plain yogurt which said it was “low fat”.  Again on examination, the amount of sugar was remarkable!

 

I have found that the evening meals in Compass Rose in particular, are salted heavily. This becomes apparent from the daily side order of additional vegetables which positively glisten in the bowl.  Medical advice warns against high salt consumption which can cause high blood pressure and this can lead to strokes and heart attacks.  Sir and Madame now ask for no salt on their additional vegetable dishes.

There have been many different recommendations over the years! You are so right about salt; I’m known to rant and rave about the sodium content in a food that is promoted as heart healthy. We did set up with our travel agent for low sodium meals on our April cruise so that should work out well. Our cardiologist has prescribed us the Mediterranean diet and one thing that’s emphasized is that fats are very different indeed. For example, while butter and beef fat are a huge no for us, we are supposed to be generous with olive oil and avocados. We are lucky because we love fish and the other components of the eating plan.

Great birthday photos!!

 

it might be fun to meet up, but Sir & Madame have a pretty busy schedule for the next two days, with very early starts!!

 

They do not have any activities planned for the calls at Acapulco and Cabo San Lucas and wonder whether your schedule might permit a meeting during the day or for a pre-dinner drink?

Dennis’ birthday greetings have meant so much to him.  He definitely does not look his age (an age that he would be upset if I mentioned)/

 

Okay you guys, most of you have met both Dennis and I.  I do not want my photo posted anywhere on a public board (but did post a photo of me -  not too identifiable — on an Alaska cruise) because it has caused issues onboard ships.  Sorry that I cannot accommodate that request.  

 

Master Echo - would love to have a pre-dinner drink it’s the two of you.  Our schedule has been crazy as well.  We can touch base  next week.\

 

In general, ships have difficulty getting provisions in South America.   So, the ship is out of several things.  In the morning we will finally be in Central America where the ship will receive lots of provisions.  A decision has apparently be made to overnight in Costa Rica and we will still visit the port in Nicaragua.

 

Not a lot to report today. Another wonderful lecture from the PBS/Artful Traveler.   

 

Again, thank you so much for birthday wishe for Dennis.  I hope that all of you reach the milestone that he achieved yesterday.

Farewell South America

 

I seem to be getting rather behind with my posts, due to a demanding on-board lifestyle and I will now attempt a little catching up.

 

This was Sir and Madame’s fourth cruise in South American waters, two on the Atlantic side and two on the Pacific side.  For this cruise half of the ten ports were in South America.  Regent advertised “up to 42 shore excursions" for this voyage , which illustrates the degree of variety of things to do ashore.  In fact Sir and Madame did not repeat any excursions during the current sailing from any of their previous visits to South America.

 

However Regent’s marketing is misleading, as it was not possible to book more than one tour in any port, as “morning” tours did not return in time to participate in “afternoon” tours.  A better and more honest description would have been “ choice from 42” etc.

 

Of the three countries, Chile appears to be the most developed, but all appear to be more stable and economically inclusive than some of their South American counterparts. Ecuador for example uses the US dollar as its national currency.

 

Whilst there is a tinge of regret at leaving South America, there is anticipation for what lies ahead.

Dining Part 2

 

Despite some remarks I had picked up prior to the commencement of this cruise, I have been delighted with the standard of service and the quality of food in the Compass Rose, the main dining room.

 

Breakfast service has been executed promptly and without any delay, whilst it has been a regular occurrence to take a leisurely three course dinner in 100 minutes.

 

The one meal taken thus far in Prime 7, found the service rather wanting.  By contrast, Pacific Rim and Sette Marie has been up to the mark.

 

Turning now to Chartreuse, this is something of an enigma.  I have heard the word “pretentious”used several times to describe the dining experience here, and I can understand why.  Whilst undoubtedly there are French staff in this restaurant, to many it is not their native language, and it is disingenuous to expect them to try.  This is particularly galling as Madame speaks fluent French, and Sir can hold his own!  It was embarrassing for the Indian sommelier to be responded to in French which went way beyond his command of the language.

 

Two French red wines were offered, one from Burgundy and one from Bordeaux.  Sir is rather partial to claret and the poor sommelier was quickly out of his depth in being able to describe the night’s offering.  

 

The food was someway short of even a Michelin one star standard, and the speed of service was abysmal, causing us to miss the evening show, despite having a reservation at 7.30 pm and only having a few courses.

 

The popularity of this dining venue on this cruise,  can be judged by a member of its staff canvassing potential diners at lunch time today.  This speaks volumes.

Wow! Sorry to hear that about Chartreuse.  We've never found dining at Chartreuse "pretentious".  The food and service have always been outstanding.  And I believe the Burgundy wine they service is only service in Chartreuse.  We're cruising in April and look forward to dining at Chartreuse.  Of course how long you dine is a preference, 1 1/2 hours for us wouldn't be long enough.

Hope you enjoy the rest of your cruise and that you have better dining experience (of what you expect).
