Rare graphicguy Posted March 4, 2019 #1 Share Posted March 4, 2019 Coming out of NYC sailing to the Bahamas, Escape was hit with a huge gust of wind. Ship listed enough that it literally threw me out of bed and plate with strawberries went flying across the room along with bottles of Champaign and anything that wasn’t tied down. I have an extended balcony. Looking out to see what was going on, I saw a chair and a table disappear in the night somewhere in the Atlantic. Dressed to head out to check out what was happening, Casino had slot machines crashed to the ground. Long and short of it, to my knowledge no one was hurt. Captain kept everyone informed. Crew was extremely helpful. Still rough this a.m. This is one bada$$ ship with great leadership and crew. 5

rabidstoat Posted March 4, 2019 #3 Share Posted March 4, 2019 Heard there were a number of Code Alphas called, hopefully just minor injuries from falls. I bet the ship is a mess to clean.

Considering what I saw last night, to what I’ve seen this a.m. (decks 6, 8 and 16) you’d think nothing happened. Great crew! Looking at my deck this a.m., looks like I lost a lounger and a table to the Atlantic last night! Can’t find my iPhone that was on the bed stand, either!

Hope I didn’t drop it out of my pocket when I went scurrying out last night to see what was happening. I got dressed pretty quickly after being thrown out of bed. There was a point around 12:00 a.m. last night where the list was bad enough I had to hold onto the edge of bed to keep from rolling off (and I wasn’t even drinking). ZsaZsa2019 Posted March 4, 2019 #8 Share Posted March 4, 2019 Could you imagine if you were on your balcony or up on deck? I dread to think what could have happened.
slugg Posted March 4, 2019 #9 Share Posted March 4, 2019 I’m skeptical of the reasoning. A gust of wind causing that big of a list is unlikely. The physics just don’t work out; you’d need sustained wind to transfer enough energy into the ship and water to perform enough work to list the ship that much. My money is on stabilizer malfunction of some sort: mechanical, electronic, software, or human error. But hey, glad nobody was seriously hurt and good to hear that the staff and crew maintained a positive experience for all the guests. Recovery from error is the first thing I look for when judging customer service; it looks like they did a great job. 🙂
Blondynka Posted March 4, 2019 #10 Share Posted March 4, 2019 My sister-in-law is on this cruise. She said it was pretty scary. She isn't the most seasoned cruiser though so the fear was probably heightened. She was going to send me some pictures later, I will post them if she does. Rare mking8288 Posted March 4, 2019 #11 Share Posted March 4, 2019 (edited) @graphicguy - Hi there ... glad to hear almost *** all is mostly well, we tracked your early sailout out of Pier 88 (by 5 minutes) & then hugged close to the coast at 10 knots average until south of Atlantic City, out of AIS radar range ... looked like ship then ran into/pass/thru the Nor-Easter. Live shipcam looked a bit rougher earlier (had to go outside to clear the sidewalk, driveway ... we did get some snow & grand niece/nephew got a day off with all NYC public school closed today) but now, still swell & choppy, I'm guessing it's 9' to 12' waves, maybe a bit higher but not too terrible for a 160,000 tons mega-ship. Luckily, it sounded like dinner service was fine and most folks, except the party crowds & casino addicts probably returned to quarters already by late night - pretty difficult to look out thru the balcony to see how rough things were. Just pickup ship's newest coordinates on Marinetraffic site, just about 25 nm southeast of Cape Harteras, SC and the Carnival Pride is probably 60 nm north of the Escape heading south as well ... best wishes for a safe & smoother sailing, for the rest of the day. I trust you nailed a great deal again and/or upgraded to your favorite AFT balcony. *** Oops, just read post below about some passengers being injuried & trust that ship's medical staff are able to deal with the emergencies & provide urgent care, without needing to do any medevac in this kind of rough weather, well. Sb9803 Posted March 4, 2019 #13 Share Posted March 4, 2019 There ARE serious injuries. WHY are they not going back to port with my injured family when the Royal Caribbean ship next to them is going back to port with their injured.

Rare graphicguy Posted March 4, 2019 Author #17 Share Posted March 4, 2019 ‘Captain just announced that the winds reached 100+ MPH and the waves hitting the ship were in excess of 90 meters. Time for a Bloody Mary and a sushi demonstration. M&G is in a couple of hours. With the martini tasting after that. Sure some of the attendees will have more info. Everything seems fine now. Will be even better this afternoon! 😉
Rare graphicguy Posted March 4, 2019 Author #18 Share Posted March 4, 2019 @mking8288.....smooth sailing right now. Walking around this a.m. talking to folks, didn’t hear of injuries until reading the reports here. Water is still choppy. If stabilizers went out, it would be a much rougher ride currently. I’m on deck 8 near Food Republic. Talking to crew and staff, the sustained winds were a surprise. They kept coming from about midnight until 1-ish a.m., when the Captain gave the “all clear”. He kept everyone informed about exactly what was happening. Not sure turning around would have been a good option to head back through the storm again. But, I’m not the Captain! He said the ship suffered no damage. But, some furniture and plates (like in my cabin) were obviously lost. Wouldn’t have thought anything as violent as what we experienced 12 hours ago ever happened by the looks of things right now!

I can believe the 100mph wind but 90 Meter Waves..... thats 295 FEET Have you found your phone? Did find my phone. My steward found it for me. It was behind one of the curtains. Must have flown across the room. 30 meter waves doesn’t sound right to me, either. I must have heard it wrong. Just came from the M&G. Everyone’s in good spirits. Crew was apologetic about the weather (like they could do anything about it). One of the dept heads said they called all the cabins last night (they called me about 1:30 a.m.) to see if any guests needed assistance. She said her crew didn’t report any, but that doesn’t mean other depts didn’t report any. All-in-all.....could have been much worse. Crew did a fantastic job. Not sure where they could dock a ship this large just anywhere. Seems to me the Captain did the right thing! Martini tasting next. BTW.....CC-ers are a great bunch. And, the group was very large!!!!!!!! Thanks to Sandy (I think) for organizing it.

(geek only in the wondering-how-it-works sense as a cruiser; i'm in no way a student of the maritime world!) i was on the ESCAPE on the 12/9-21 trip and we went through storms the first 2 sea days. (it was my 8th cruise so stormy seas were not new to me, but this was the stormiest ever!) plus, i had an aft-facing balcony so could feel it more... plus i was truly fascinated by and wondering how exactly the ship could withstand that violent sea state beyond knowing it was built for it. i felt it so much that i woke up at 4 AM and had to check the navigation channel, and saw a screen that confirmed my concern! (see pic) soooooo if you can please direct me to how to do this basic research on the physics you mention, i'd high five you in my mind! thanks! Rare graphicguy Posted March 4, 2019 Author #24 Share Posted March 4, 2019 (edited) MKING.....forgot to answer your question. Last minute booking (less than 2 weeks) when I spotted a mini-suite with a large balcony for less than a balcony. Forward cabin close to the BrewHouse (which is my new fave bar of all NCL bars). Obviously, haven’t been able to use the huge balcony. But, I’ve got all new furniture ready sitting out there replacing the stuff that blew away. No way a MediVac Helo could have landed last night, if it was required. Probably not this morning either. I’ll do a proper pic review when I return! ribs914 Posted March 4, 2019 #25 Share Posted March 4, 2019 very scary.. have been on the Breakaway when we sailed through a Bomb Cyclone and we were listed for 4 hours. We were listed 10-12 degrees. This sounds worse. Glad you are safe.
