Since it had been reported that those passengers who went to the hospital were back on the ship, wouldn't someone who had a slotmachine fall on their head require more hospital attention and therefore not return to the ship?

Not necessarily. If the impact only caused superficial injuries, the tests at the hospital could easily identify any real or extreme injuries requiring additional hospitalization. We do have a good bit of protection in our sculls to offset a minor (assuming it was only a slight gash) to our brain without requiring more than a few stitches.  Hopefully the patient rec'd the required medical assistance and they would be able to continue on the cruise.

Obviously I no longer work in the Healthcare system but still maintain a certain amount of knowledge as far as what's required in certain situations.

The story says  lotto machine fell on a lady.  NOT a slot machine.

I'm not sure if you have ever been on an NCL cruise, or in the casino of one...but this is a dramatic difference.

Every night they have a lotto drawing in the casino.  It is a wooden square box with a plastic sphere on top with lotto balls.  The 120 pound casino host women push this around nightly and it is on wheels.  This makes sense of toppling over and falling on someone.  It gets moved all the time and drunk people bump into it and it moves a foot or two.

Yes someone could get hurt by it, but the degree of damage of this vs a metal slot machine is drastically different.

Please direct me to any other post mentioning a slot machine "tipping over and falling one a woman's head" other than your posts.  The OP who wrote a review said he himself asked the casino staff about it and they told him that the women slipped and fell into the slot machine, that one did not tip over.  As far as the news reporting it...was that in the same report which said that the ship listed 45 degrees putting deck 6 under water?

And a slot machine weighs between 200-250 pounds.  You can google that.  Someone mentioned they own real slot machines and they are actually more than 250 pounds.

So again, a 16 degree list tipping a 250 pound metal machine onto a woman's head in which the only reports of it happening are your daughter and the news and their half the ship was in the ocean report seems highly unlikely.  Sorry.

She was in the infirmiry where I was and she was facing away from the slot machine and it fell on her from behind.  Her head was shaved and she had a large green bandage wrapped around her head.  She receives stitches in her head and left the infirmiry in a wheel chair.  In fact she asked the infirmiry if she was going to get a bill for their services and they told her no. The first alpha code called on the ship was to the  casino.  I can assure you the slot machine came down.

As noted in the article...there is a major difference between a slot machine and the lotto machine.  Mainly about 150 pounds and metal v. wood and plastic

Saw a ship (maybe 2, as they were in the distance) this a.m. who must have sailed through the same violent winds we did.  So, we were apparently not alone in the storm.

I'm late to the game here but wondering if the other ships had any listing?

I've always visually found the height and width of Escape and sisters to seem a look a little more likely to tip compared to a wider ship that isn't as tall.

Our NCL Bliss cruise in December was not able to dock in Nassau but other ships were able to dock so I wonder if the height gets more wind pressure than similar weighted ships shaped differently.  The day we couldn't dock at Nassau was still quite comfortable to be on top deck.

Escape docked in Nassau fine.  Not thinking height has any type of bearing on whether they can dock.  But, I am a passenger and that’s about as nautical as I get!

It was a specific day Dec 21 for NCL Bliss which is similar to the Escape in shape, I don't think Escape was scheduled to dock in Nassau that day.  I don't remember the other ships but believe all other scheduled ships did dock in Nassau that day.

The captain mentioned the force of wind on the side of ship made docking at the pier unsafe; so it had me wondering only b/c other ships did dock at Nassau and the earlier post mentioned other ships sailing thru same weather but I haven't heard of other ships listing 3/3. Perhaps size doesn't matter but shape does. 😂

^^^^^^^

I really don’t know.  I’ve sailed medium sized ships (RCCL Liberty of the Seas, Carnival Conquest, NCL GEM) and I’ve sailed some of the largest cruise ships (NCL Epic, NCL Escape, NCL -“Away, RCCL Allure of the Seas).  I’ve sailed to NASSAU several times.  While I’ve missed ports for lots of reasons, I’ve never missed a port because of the shape or height of a ship.

Not sure that helps you.  I’ve never known a ship to miss a port because of its shape.

Again, maybe one of the true nautical experts will see this and give you a more technical explanation.

Wish I could provide more info.

Weather changes dramatically, and quickly.

And, I can give a first hand account of how weather can affect a ship as large as the Escape.  It’s one of the largest cruise ships at sea.  The ship went from “smooth sailing” one minute to throwing me out of bed the next....it happened very quickly.

What you’re missing is the fact that with high winds, also comes high waves.  Docking with high winds and high waves is tricky, at best.  At worst (like with 100+ knot winds), securing a ship the size of the Escape is not only next to impossible, but also dangerous.  Walkways would be swaying, making falls likely as debarkation is attempted.  Dock workers trying to secure the ropes would be in danger.....there’s all sorts of bad things that can happen in high winds when trying to dock.

Just because a ship docked an hour before your scheduled time to dock, doesn’t mean the conditions didn’t change dramatically.

Personally, I think I’d be happy that the Captain didn’t attempt to dock in high winds.

Shape and height of the ship had nothing to do with it.
