dcruisers Posted March 8, 2019 #1 Share Posted March 8, 2019 We have been on over 30 cruises including on Carnival, Princess, RCL, NCL, Viking and Celebrity. We are considering the Horizon for next winter’s cruise. It has ports that we haven’t visited in a few years and some of our traveling friends have never visited. We are partial to Celebrity’s no smoking policy- makes going to the casino more pleasant. Is smoking allowed in the Horizon casino? Also, any input on pros and cons from former Horizon cruisers would be appreciated!
Rare mdin Posted March 8, 2019 #2 Share Posted March 8, 2019 Smoking is allowed in the casino and you can definitely smell it when in there. Also, deck 11 starboard is basically a smoking section. I'm not a smoker myself and hate the smell of it, but it didn't ruin my experience at all (although I didn't spend too much time in the casino to be fair). Horizon is a great ship. I'm just off the Horizon and did a quick review here in case you need more information:
dcruisers Posted March 8, 2019 Author #3 Share Posted March 8, 2019 Thank you so much- I throughly enjoyed your review! We just got off Celebrity Equinox and had the same issue with chair hogs. Wish staff would be more aggressive with removing “saved” chairs not used for hours! I do have another question- what time was early dinner seating and was anytime dining an option? again, I appreciate the information.
Rare mdin Posted March 8, 2019 #4 Share Posted March 8, 2019 Thank you. Early seating dinner was at 6pm. Your time dining is available. I believe it's between 5:45-9:30.
jjcruiselover Posted March 9, 2019 #5 Share Posted March 9, 2019 The casino on the Horizon is very smoky, probably the worst I have experienced. I spent less time in the casino on the Horizon than ever before because of the smoke. The casino seemed smaller and very compact so maybe that is why it seemed so smoky. Seems like every Carnival ship I am on I think this is the smokiest casino I have smelled. I guess the bottom line is every casino on Carnival is really bad when it comes to smoke. What’s worse, and this varies by ship class, is the smoke often drifts to areas adjacent to the casino. 3
mets123 Posted March 9, 2019 #7 Share Posted March 9, 2019 The smoking situation is the worst I have encountered on a Carnival ship. My lungs actually hurt when I got out of there. It was so bad that I saw casino employees wearing masks. You would think that their newest ship would have a better system to remove smoke. I guess Carnival doesn't care. 2

Rare mdin Posted March 9, 2019 #10 Share Posted March 9, 2019 I noticed that the casino funnel is enclosed in glass on the 5th deck above the casino bar, obviously to keep the smoke from escaping the area. That shows how smokey it is in there. I hung around the 4th deck in the atrium a few times and never really noticed the smoke smell around there. I think they do a decent job containing it to the casino, however a better filtration system is badly needed.
mets123 Posted March 9, 2019 #11 Share Posted March 9, 2019 Thanks for your advice. My next five cruises are on RCCL. FYI, I'm Platinum on Carnival so I have seen enough of their casinos to know what I'm talking about. Three of four years ago it was never this bad. That’s the main reason out of 30 + cruise we enjoy Celebrity’s no smoking policy. However- we also check itinerary and the Horizon has one that we haven’t sailed to in a few years. Also- when my husband had appendicitis ( ruptureD) on the Carnival Magic last year- the medical staff was phenomenal! We were so hoping that the new ship would have less issues with smoke. BENHANDEL Posted March 11, 2019 #13 Share Posted March 11, 2019 I am so sensitive to smoke. I am allergic to it, have asthma and reactive airway disease. Although I would love to visit a smoke-free casino, I knew going on carnival cruise the casino would not be a option, but I was worried about smoke leaking into to the common areas. I was pleased with that. The only place I could even smell it was when I took the stairs and rounded the landing by the casino entrances. Overall, I really enjoyed my time on horizon, enough to try another carnival ship.

We have friends who will not cruise on Carnival with us because of medical conditions that cannot tolerate even minimal exposure to smoke.
Jaguar37 Posted June 12, 2019 #15 Share Posted June 12, 2019 I feel your pain. I despise smoke more than just about anything in the world for a list if reasons... health and being able to breathe being one of them. I abhor the Casino floor on the Carnival Cruises I have been on... Splendorx2 , Glory, Breeze, Inspiration. The smoke seeps everywhere to the 3rd floor atrium... and just about the entire floor the casino is on and more. To hear that they have somewhat limited it seeping to other floors and areas on the Horizon gives me some comfort. Still I am hesitant to have much hope and basically have to deal with it while my lungs take weeks to recover from the damage.
Bases5 Posted June 13, 2019 #16 Share Posted June 13, 2019 Do you think you all could answer the OP question about the Horizon other than making it another smoking argumentation. The first responder answered their smoking question I would love to here more about the Horizon im a non smoker but these threads get old

Also, the activities (like trivia) on Horizon are not close to the casino. I did not realize what a plus that was until I went on Imagination and realized we could not participate in any of the activities.
purplephenom Posted June 13, 2019 #18 Share Posted June 13, 2019 Are there areas around the Casino that should be avoided if the smell of smoke bothers you? I dont think I'm allergic, I just end up with a cold/sinus thing if I'm around smoke too much.

So easy to avoid the casino area and I could not smell it in common areas outside of the mid-ship stairwell on the same floor. If I were an elevator user u would not have even encountered that area. And the smoke was not overwhelming to my lungs-could simply "smell" it. I was very pleased! (And nervous about the breeze at Christmas with the open casino area....) Jaguar37 Posted June 13, 2019 #20 Share Posted June 13, 2019 Thank you for the insight. As for Breeze it was fairly typical. 5th floor near elevator which goes to the café has a smokey feel and affected my lungs. Quite a few of the nearby shops on the floor have noticeable seepage. Once you get fairly fast from the Casino area its not too bad. I'd take floor 2 to bypass the Casino area to go bow to aft and then up the aft stairs. Breeze was a fantastic beautiful ship... best Carnival cruise ship I have sailed on... Horizon is in 2 days. Yayee!!!

I'm not a gambler so I have no reason to go in the casino. So if its easy to avoid, I'm happy.

I would avoid that area especially at night when the casino gets busy.

I believe the reason it's gotten this bad is because they have limited the smoking areas to just a few places. No more smoking in the cabins or balconies so most smokers just go to the casino.
