Palma De Mallorca (Valldemossa, Soller and Cathedral)

Recommended Posts

Will be here in June and would like the best options to see Valldemossa (1.5-2 hours), Soller (and ride tram), back to Palma to see Cathedral , Plaza Mayor (if good) and the walkway along the water (saw a picture, but can't remember the name).  It doesn't seem like we would have enough time to ride the train part of the route.  We are there 8am-6pm.

We don't like huge tour groups--Small ones are okay.  If there is something independent we can do, we're up to it if we have everything mapped out so we don't have to stress in the middle of the day.  Would love some suggestions.  (Was reading the 16 page thread below, but wondered since I had narrowed down what we would like to do, if someone could help.)

So,  we took the wooden train from Palma to Soller and then the tram to the Port of Soller.  Took the tram back to Soller and had lunch right outside the cathedral.  Next the bus to Valdemossa before continuing back to Palma.  The train/bus stop was less than a 10E taxi ride from the port.  Difference was that we were in port until 11 pm so we had more time.  I don't remember exactly what time we got back to Palma but we did have dinner in the ship's MDR.

About how long was each leg of the trip:  (1) The train to Soller?   (2) The tram to the Port of Soller?  (3) The bus to the Valdemossa?  (4) The bus to Palma?

If you're not sure, maybe someone familiar with the area could advise.  I was wanting to know the different stages so if we have to cut something, we'll know approximate times.

It looks as if you have read through all my posts on :

https://boards.cruisecritic.com/topic/2284697-palma-de-mallorca-diy/

My best advise is to rent a car as to complete all your wishes it  will be a pain on public transport  as you will be watching the clock all day, and it will be stress free renting a car.

If you are not up to driving yourself Try this :

The tram was 20 - 30 minutes.  The other times I don't quite remember.  The train and bus both run on a schedule so they can be checked on line. Sorry.

Your pictures are beautiful!!!   If we are only able to do the train and tram OR Valldemossa, what do you think was the best?

I did read through your posts.  Great information!!!

I love the link to the private tours.  This would be perfect if it included a "ride on the wooden train," but their prices on the "shared" tours are very good.  (I think the train was why I was drawn to Soller.  Without that, Valldemossa may be fine on it's own.)

If you need a guide for the day I can recommend my friend Sergio( who is an accredited  tour guide) The last tour that I helped organize for CC member was :

Pick up from port then on to Valdermossa to monastery.
then to Port de Soller then the tram ride back to Soller and the train back to Palma where Sergio was waiting for a guided tour of the town then back to the ship.

If you are interested in this idea please email me on shoeuk at hotmail.com this would satisfy your requirements.

My vote would be the train/tram.  I don't know that it was "best" but Soller and the Port of Soller were an interesting day.  The bus ride back from Soller, through Valldemossa was interesting as it seemed we went over a mountain the bus itself seemed like a relic and there were a lot of fumes.  Getting off in Valld. you need to check when the bus schedule to make sure you are back in Palma on time. The bus station was across the street from the train station and something like a 6E taxi to the port.

So researching a little more and taking this information to heart, I think we may do the train to Soller and the tram to the Port of Soller.  So what is the easiest/fastest way to get back to then possibly do a hop-on-hop-off bus to see Palma and the cathedral?  (I'm still thinking of your friend for the tour, Roger B, but like doing independent tours for flexibility.  Still thinking.)

Get the bus back to Palma ( 211 bus from P de Soller) about 45  mins or Taxi 30mins.

Love all your information!!  I put Port De Soller to Palma in and the range is 28-56 Euro (33 in the middle).  Is that about right?

I'll look up the Train Station in Palma.  Is it close to the cruise port?  About what is the train fee?  Tram fee?  How much time on the train?  How much time on the tram?

The train/Tram fare is 32 euros you can see the times below , the station is about 15/20 mins from the cruise terminal or you can take the (No 3 bus ).which is about 5 min walk from the cruise terminal if your ship docks on the quay on the Passeo  Maritimo otherwise you will need to get a taxi to the station.

Awesome!!  Do you recommend buying beforehand or at the station?

You can only buy tickets at the day ,and yes the train comes back to Palma. if you read back on my past posts on

you will find all you require .

You've been very helpful.  Another question:  I believe I saw pictures of a small village near the Port of Soller.  Would you happen to know of the name of the village and the best way to get there from the Port.

The village is Fornalutx you will see it sign posted on the road Soller to P de Soller, it about 12 miles.

Roger,

I have put some thought into our day and think we'll take Valldemossa out of the equation.  At first I was thinking there wouldn't be enough to do in Soller and Port de Soller.

If we take a taxi first to Soller and go to the train station there, are we able to purchase the ticket from Soller to Palma that early.  We would be getting there around 8:30-8:45 and the time for the train back to Palma that we would like is 14 (2pm).

If we could do this, we may avoid the 20-30 minute wait closer to 2pm.  Then we could visit Soller, tram to Port de Soller, have lunch from 12-1:30 and then taxi to the train station in time for the departure.

So in order to make this plan work, buying the tickets early would be helpful.

Sorry I cannot follow the logic of this idea, firstly you can buy tickets at any of the train /tram stations. so if you go straight to Soller by taxi you will be there around 9.30 . so here's the question you still have to get to P de Soller?

P de Soller   is a pretty small port ,after a half hour walk along the sea front there is nothing else you will be there around 10.30 and you will have so you will have to wait until 1pm for lunch as most of the proper restaurants do not open till then.

This is not a good Plan !!!

Have a rethink and try not to miss out Valdermossa or if you do take the taxi straight to P de Soller and get the tram /train back to Palma .

This way you will have time for a walk and a coffee in  Soller then get an earlier train and have lunch in Palma

I had read that you need to be at the train station at least 1/2 hour early in order to get tickets.  So in Soller if we want to get the 2pm train, then we have to be at the station at 1:30pm.  Is that about right?

Also, 1/2 hour walk along the bay is about all the time needed there?  (Plus time to stop for coffee, pastry.)  I was afraid if we didn't have 1.5 hours we would be cutting ourselves short of the experience.

What is there in Soller?  I have looked at YouTube videos and it basically shows small back streets and the main square by the Cathedral.  Am I missing what else may be there?

As I have said there nothing of interest in P de Soller it is the destination of the tram ride coming back on the train you can buy the tickets in P  de Soller and you will have no queuing for tickets.

The village of Soller is a better place to spend time in as there is more to see .

The tram winding its way through the middle of the village is a well worth picture opportunity.

Thanks so much for this.  I had missed that there was't much to do in Port de Soller.  So I'm putting Valledmossa back in and think I have a schedule.  Transport to Valldemossa, stay for 1 hour or a little longer.  Then continue to the Port de Soller and try to be dropped off 1/2 way around the bay.  Walk to far end and get the tram back to Soller.  Walk the small streets and then sit by the Cathedral for lunch.  2:00 pm train back to Palma.  Does this sound like it will work?    Any good recommendation for someone to provide transport?

 O.K  you have 3 options;

(1) Rent a car (my personal choice)  car delivered to port waiting for you.

         https://www.arashrentacar.com/0/arash--rent-a-car-English/2

(2) take my guide for the day around 450 euros will work out a reasonable day out if you can find another couple from the roll call.

(3) Taxi to Valldermossa  then bus or taxi to P de Soller the Tram/Train back to Palma look at the bus timing on the bus site and you can work out the timings.

I f you decide on the guide write to me on shoeuk at hotmail.com
