Internet Woes

That is truely awful and should come with a large credit, even if the advice itself was reasonable. SS seems to have really screwed up big time.

But as a couple of us have said, there is an improvement now. I did the Bridge tour today and the Captain said to the group that the latest problem had come because of a satellite access problem when we got near Japan. I am hopeful that the current improvement continues and I have to say at the moment it is acceptable to me and the fastest of the last 10 weeks. I am being positive.

Japan certainly had a regulation for Non Japanese ships that they had to turn off the satellite band that supplied internet and cell phone usage whilst in Japanese waters.I don't know if that regulation still applies but would fit with what turtlemichael was told.

Norman is on top of everything. Even a lesser HD couldn't ignore the steady stream of people beating a path to the office to complain about the slow internet.

Is there a lesser HD?   Oh.....Martin by a hair.

All I know is that when I was having all those issues last June while doing my heavy reporting and formatting, it was impossible to post picture files on the Muse and was very thankful for the help Jimmy Kovel provided In rectifying them for me with whomever was in charge of communications at that time.  He met me one morning about 6:30a up in the Observation Lounge where I loved to do my writing since no one typically showed up until after 9:30a.

Appreciate these various posts, comments and follow-ups. "Free" is kind of better, but based on the recents experiences/frustrations by Spins/Candy and others on the Silver Spirt, the questions now focus more as to the "QUALITY" with the Internet on Silversea ships.   Am realistic and do not expect such connections on a ship via satellite to be that fast or perfect. BUT . . . .

In July, for our first time, we will be doing Western Canada and then sailing up to Alaska on the Silver Muse, setting Denali, etc.  For Spins/Candy, she was in a "Mission Impossible" situation of not being able to post pictures to Cruise Critic, nor even to e-mail any visuals to me so that I could post them on these boards.  Does Silversea block access to some sites such a photo hosting locations?  Or, is it about the size of photos being uploaded?  While sailing recently, have others had problems and challenges?  Personally, I never try while sailing to upload large pictures and/or significant files of visuals.  From my large 24mp RAW photo files on a MacBook Pro laptop, I always downsize to more of a better-managed size around 300kb before seeking to post from the ship to the Cruise Critic boards, etc.  Other experiences from recent SS sailings?  Anyone having had any additional discussions with on-ship technical/IT experts as to how to avoid and/or work around such situations?  Are such problems based on the time of day and how many others on the ship are seeking to use such Internet access?

.

THANKS!  Enjoy!  Terry in Ohio

The short answer is yes, or at least SS did last June.

During our February voyage, I was only able to upload photos while using the CC site.  The negative of that restriction is two-fold; (1) it's practically impossible to do significant formatting so that the posts are easy to read, and (2) it takes forever to compose and upload the files from a phone.

Terry, if you're downloading your photos to a laptop and resizing, then I imagine your upload times will be much, much faster than mine as long as you're composing your posts within CC and uploading directly from your laptop.

Appreciate this added background and follow-up fro Stumblefoot.  It seems that "Size makes a difference!!".  Clearly for those not having a laptop, it can be much more challenging with cell phones and other technology tools.  Looking forward between now and late July to be hearing from others as to their success in using the Internet from Silversea ships.
