September Weather - NYC/SH

We're taking the QM2 out of NYC to SH in the middle of September.  Any observations to share re what to expect in the way of temperatures, storms, etc?  Your answers will help us decide what to pack in the way of non-formal clothing.  Thank you!

Unfortunately, predicting weather in North Atlantic is impossible. You are still in TRS season in the Caribbean, so can get the tail end of storms once they track NE. However, that is only 1 of many variables.

 

Average temps on departure should be mid 70's and should be in a range of high 60's to low 80's. Arrival Southampton, I would except temps in high 60's/low 70's.

The OP mentioned an E'bd TA from New York to Southampton aboard QM2. New York is south of Southampton and since Great Circle courses follow the Gulf Stream, they won't go South.

Assuming a strict Great Circle course, for a good part of the crossing they will be on a northeasterly heading from New York;  once they are south of Iceland (at their northernmost) they will follow a southeasterly course to Southampton.

Unfortunately on this type of passage, a strict Great Circle routing is impracticable, so we always did what can best be described as a composite GC, staying within the Gulf Stream/N. Atlantic Drift.

 

A strict GC goes too far North, putting you into a counter current, which defeats the distance saving.

 

While the courses into the Western Approaches are more likely ESE'ly, you are still 10 degree further North than New York
