Rare WesW Posted April 16, 2019 #52 Share Posted April 16, 2019 Hi Rich & Barbara; thanks again for sharing your Cloud expedition voyage with us in words and photos. Rich, when you have a chance would appreciate if you can find out who the Cloud leadership will be in June (Captain, HD, head sommelier). Thanks in advance
rich48100 Posted April 16, 2019 Author #53 Share Posted April 16, 2019 Wes, jpalbany is correct, we will be on the circumnavigation of Iceland in August, followed by a trip to Greenland. we had a nice tour today out of Tokoradi, Ghana to Kakum, National Park. We did the Canopywalk about 100 feet above the forest floor. Nice views and rope and wood bridges were not a problem walking, about 7 of them. We then went to a family Palm oil manufacturing plant. Family business and everyone contributing. tonight leaving for Abidjan, Coite Dovre. here are a few pics from today
Rare RachelG Posted April 16, 2019 #54 Share Posted April 16, 2019 hi, Rich, love your Ghana pics. Is the food really as dire as reported by Celles? We board in a little over a month. I know I can trust your opinion on this.
LittleRedJohn Posted April 16, 2019 #55 Share Posted April 16, 2019 I am on the Cloud. I don't know who is criticizing the food. We're quite pleased with it. I had a beef fillet tonight and would give it a grade of nine. My wife had chicken oscar and would give it the same grade. All of our meals have been good. Some very good or excellent. Breakfast buffet could use some more variety. Eggs are always very good. I had a Reuben for lunch one day that was below average. Fried onion rings could use improvement. Fish has been good. One day the chief went to market and brought grouper. Grilled slices of it by the pool one noon. Excellent. had a room service hamburger last night that was quite good. Room service has several very good pasta dishes. Desserts are very good to excellent. Not much to complain about on this cruise. rich48100 Posted April 17, 2019 Author #56 Share Posted April 17, 2019 Rachel, I concur with LittleRedJohn concerning food comments.we are mainly meat eaters, and those dishes have been great. Don’t have many fish dishes so glad he commented on those. We have only had one meal at La Terraza, and it was good, but there was more variety on Regent. Barbara has been taken care of well with her gluten free menu choices, and she always finds something she can have. They are always looking out for her. We have had a number of breakfasts in our room before excursions and meals come on time and could be hotter, but acceptable. I have only had the Reuben once and that was enough. Burgers were good, and Barbara really likes the sweet potato fries. The filets have been done extremely well. They have made some special salads for her, she just tells them what she wants and they prepare. The virgin daqueries she liked so much on Regent have been good for her here as well. all in all, I don’t think you will have a problem with finding good food and drink on the ship. Enjoy your upcoming cruise, and we look forward to cruising with you all around Iceland.
celles Posted April 17, 2019 #57 Share Posted April 17, 2019 Food is going from bad to worse. I don t eat neat. Food at the Terrazza is dire as well as at the resto. The only thing I really can recommend is the lentil soup at the Terrazza. If you are into said to be fatty posh food you might be pleased with the food. Elmina castle was fine yesterday but far away from being touchy, the Ivory Coast Grand Bassam was crap. The didint stop at the Yellow Fever monument nor at the Palace. Lots of people were complaining..

chrism23 Posted April 17, 2019 #59 Share Posted April 17, 2019 Thanks for a great review, photos, and all the hard work. I will be on the Wind in June, London to Copenhagen via Norway. I was on the Wind in the Caribbean last year and the ship definitely needed major work. From your review it seems that a lot of it has been accomplished. rich48100 Posted April 18, 2019 Author #60 Share Posted April 18, 2019 Wes, I inquired about who will be on the ship when you sail in June and at this point they said the Captain will be Mino Pontillo. They don’t have info on the others yet, still in a state of flux. interesting day at Abidjan and Grand Basssm in Cote d’ivoire. A number of opportunities for shopping, but we managed not to buy anything. Lots of bus riding with a few stops along the way for pictures. On the entire trip from Lisbon we have had a police escort to get us through traffic, and this is the first time I have been in the front bus to see what they do. They work really hard clearing traffic and amazing to see them at work. Also along the road we stirred up whole tree loads of fruit bats. Quite a sight. Onward to Sierra Leone. Here are some pics.

Rare RachelG Posted April 19, 2019 #62 Share Posted April 19, 2019 Great pics. Sounds like the food onboard is acceptable, but I will steer George clear of the Reuben sandwich.

Master Echo Posted April 20, 2019 #64 Share Posted April 20, 2019 A friend who sailed on this cruise from Capetown and disembarked at Accra, has said the following:- The food wasn’t terrible ..just ok. Not up to past standards or ingredients..but could be because of the ship size and limited cruising ports to bring goods on. Definitely was not the same as the past! He was particularly disappointed with La Terrazza, and he is a seasoned SS traveller. I am really surprised as I did the same cruise on the Wind from Cape Town to Barcelona, and there were no problems with the standard or availability of ingredients. Kindest regards Master Echo
rich48100 Posted April 20, 2019 Author #65 Share Posted April 20, 2019 We went to Tokeh Beach in Sierra Leone yesterday and on a birdwatching tour today outside of Freetown near the Guam dam. The beach activities were festive with plenty of food and drink, and Barbara was able to get a little retail therapy. Zodiac rides were smooth and no problems getting in or out. Birdwatching was about an hours drive from the ship, and Freetown is a very busy city. Glad we had a police escort. Crazy traffic. Got to see a blue breasted kingfisher, no picture unfortunately. Other birds also spotted, and the true birders in the group seemed to be happy. For me it was a nice walk in the forest and had a chance to see some birds. On the way back to the ship, went by several trees with a multitude of fruit bats just hangin’ around. Of coarse we got out and got some pics. here are a few from the last couple of days. celles Posted April 20, 2019 #66 Share Posted April 20, 2019 I love breakfast since I only have the tasty bircher muesli, the excellent bread. Hash browns and bacon are both utterly fatty and hardvto digest. The donuts were fine at first but it seems to me they are several days old by now and I discontinued having them. Burgers are terrible, the salads are disappointing and la Terrazza is only good for lentil soup and chestnut icecream. I disliked all the main courses I had up there

rich48100 Posted April 22, 2019 Author #68 Share Posted April 22, 2019 Today we are in Banjul, The Gambia. We were greeted on the dock as we arrived by a band doing their rendition of “When the Saints come marching in”. Went on a tour in a nature preserve and saw plenty of Monkeys and birds, including a giant Kingfisher in a tree, see pic. Then on to some tributaries of The Gambia river in a boat. Nice river tour with more birds, and just a nice float down the river. Birds included Spoonbill, stork, herons, egrets and others. Then on to the Market place for some retail therapy. All in all an easy day. we will be off shortly for Dakar, Senegal. Here are a few pics from today.

celles Posted April 23, 2019 #70 Share Posted April 23, 2019 Today s tour was the worst I have ever been on. I didn t meet the tour description at all and the guide took us to a shabby market and passed all the picturesque building without stopping anywhere. We were taken to a run down zoo, BG, to a revolting street market and some tourist trap market. Being seated on the right side of the bus I managed to take the following pics somehow. Daveywavey70 Posted April 23, 2019 #71 Share Posted April 23, 2019 Still, at least the you’ve enjoyed the Muesli so the cruise isn’t a complete disaster. Keep your chin up. 2

rich48100 Posted April 25, 2019 Author #73 Share Posted April 25, 2019 We have been in Dakar, Senegal for the last two days, and enjoyed excursions and events. We went on a truck safari, to Goree island for a night time event, and then to Pink Lake for a look at peoplemining salt by hand at a very shallow salty lake. The highlight was the safari at Bandia Park with many different animals in an open setting. giraffe, rhino, Ostrich, warthogs, Monkeys, many colorful birds and more. Goree island was an evening event since we were in Dakar overnight. Good performances and meal, but far too much food. Pink lake was interesting, and lots of hard work by salt miners. here are a few pics.
shipsmail Posted April 26, 2019 #74 Share Posted April 26, 2019 We were on the cruise from Ushuaia to Cape Town and the food was excellent, though there it was not possible to load new food on the „ports“ of call. No problems at all. We will be back to the ship in Lisbon.

I was on the same cruise. We got 'lobster' at Tristan da Cunha. I tried to talk the chef into an elephant seal BBQ the night we left Gold Harbour on South Georgia. However, an ecomentalist pax and some of the expedition staff overheard the conversation, went nuts... and had that idea vetoed.
