Norway Cruising Question

We have booked a Norway cruise this July and have been allocated late sitting dinner. Looking at the cruise itinerary there seems to be 'cruise by' sightseeing late pm (16.00 to 20.00) and late night (20.00 onwards); sights that we would want to see and not be missing due to being in the restaurant at the time. There appears to be quite a number of late pm sights, theoretically before our dinner slot, so changing to early sitting, if it were available, would not likely make any difference. Can anyone advise if the cruise daily sheet/programme gives times of when we pass the interesting points and perhaps give any information about this aspect of the cruise. We could no doubt opt for the buffet on such nights but on past cruises have always stuck with the main dining option. We have been on cruise ships where we have not fancied the buffet in any way. This will be our first Fred Olsen cruise so once again can anyone pass on any information as to the pros and cons of the buffet dining.

You actually have a third option if you do not want to go to a restaurant as you could ask for room service.  Not sure if it has changed in the last year, but you could get a cold platter and perhaps a soup before and small desert delivered to your room.  We have been known to order room service early and then return to it when it was a good time to eat, having ordered cold platters and small desert each and made sure we have asked our room maid not to take it away.  There is always the late buffet at about 11pm if you are still hungry - you will not starve on a boat.  Captains will generally announce approx times of specific scenic cruising, but if there is any advance notice the exact times could change obviously.  There is usually an announcement as the ship leaves a port and at midday if at sea then, but I do not think they will announce anything a day early.

I would have thought the difference between MDR and buffet is pretty obvious.  You would be able to spend less time in the buffet if you wish to do so, but MDR will take about 1.5 hours if you have all courses.

  • 2 months later...

The nights are long up that way in the summer, so I don't think it'll make much difference one way or the other which dinner sitting.

On our Norway cruise a few years back we sat up on deck around 11pm and it was still light enough to see all the scenery etc.
