Switching onboard account payment method

I've been on three RCI cruises and have always set up my on board account with the credit card I intended to pay with when I do my 90 day pre-registration. With security issues seeming to continue to rise, I am considering pre-registering as a cash account then switching to a credit card when boarding. Does anyone have any advice on whether this is a good or bad idea??? TY!!

We did this on our last two cruises. On one we changed to credit card when we checked in at the port and on the other we changed on the last night at guest services. In the latter case, we paid off at that time and came away with a receipt and an all-zero account.

No issues to report on either occasion.

When you say you paid off, do you mean with cash?

No. We kept it as a cash account throughout the cruise but when we went to settle on the last night we gave them a credit card instead of cash and asked them to process the transaction on the spot.

Got it. I was trying to avoid a last night visit to guest services. That's why I wanted to switch at boarding. TY

This is the easiest thing in the world to do. Zero problems.

We went late, at about 11 pm, and there was no line at that time.

But adding the credit card when checking in at the port was dead easy too. Probably took a little longer for us as our cards are European and they had to do some additional check but even so it couldn't have taken longer than 30 seconds.

I've done this whenever the online check-in reqires the full credit card number.  As an added bonus, we can get cash from the casino without the service charge.

We do this every cruise, cash account for pre-registration and then hand over a credit card when we check in at the terminal. Never had any problems.

We did this for our last cruise too. There was no problem.

And refundable OBC in cash at the end of the cruise, instead of spending it on yet another t shirt or magnet!😁

The only thing I would change with this strategy is to wait until the last day to give them the credit card at Guest Services.  This way you can get cash from the casino for the entire cruise without paying the 5% fee.

I've started doing this as well since onboard the staff seem to manage to get my currency conversion preference correct. When I provide the credit card at check in, most of the time it's set up wrong.

I've always input my credit card number when setting up my SeaPass account online but this sounds like a great option now. I just did my online SetSail and had trouble inputting the cc...now I'll just skip it....and give the cc on the last evening.

TY everyone for the responses. I don't use the Casino, but think I'll just wait until the last couple of days to switch to my credit card. Appreciate it. 😉
