For the first time ever we booked a cruise directly with the cruise line. There charge for basic travel insurance for a 14 night cruise is $135 per person for a very highly rated insurance company. We normally do not buy a basic policy but the price is so much lower. My question is does anyone buy insurance from a cruise line and if so has everything gone smoothly ?

It all depends upon precisely what the policy actually covers.

Double check about anything that might relate to transportation to/from the cruise, as that probably would NOT be covered, unless purchased as part of the cruise.

And double check limits and coverage for medical care/evacuation, if you don't already have that coverage from your regular health insurance.

It's impossible to predict if things will "go smoothly" without knowing, for starters, what is covered and for how much, etc.  Just because someone else's claim did - or did not - go smoothly doesn't mean that same situation would apply to you.

And it's especially difficult to offer any experiences, given you have declined to mention which cruise line or which type of policy.  Who would even know if they had experience with that *same* type of policy?

Also, booking "directly  with the cruise line" doesn't rule in or out how you purchase the insurance, e.g., from the cruise line or from a third-party insurer.

This is a Caribbean cruise leaving from Manhattan and returning to Manhattan. The cruise line is NCI and we would pay them direct. My health insurance policy does not cover any place out of the US. We are driving to the port and from the port.
