BrittersC Posted April 27, 2019 #1 Share Posted April 27, 2019 I just went to cash the check for my OBC of over $550 usd only to discover the check has expired after 90 days. I totally forgot about it, is there anyway to get it re-issued? I’m so upset, things were just so busy after Christmas that I totally forgot. Any advice would be greatly appreciated! Potstech Posted April 27, 2019 #2 Share Posted April 27, 2019 Call Princess as no one here can do anything for you. Good Luck and let us know the results.
BrittersC Posted April 27, 2019 Author #3 Share Posted April 27, 2019 I realize that nobody on here can fix the issue, I was just wondering if this has happened to anyone else.
Aus Traveller Posted April 27, 2019 #4 Share Posted April 27, 2019 Do checks expire in 90 days where you live? That is tough. In Australia, a cheque is valid for 12 months, but that rule doesn't help you.

But the check from Princess is not a "normal" check. Printed on it is a statement that the check is good for 90 days. This is common for refund checks and from various companies that have promotions. In practice many say valid for only 60 days.

Rare CineGraphic Posted April 27, 2019 #7 Share Posted April 27, 2019 Most banks allow you to deposit a check via your mobile phone and the bank's app....no trip to the bank needed. Wow....$550 is nothing to sneeze at. My guess is that the odds of getting them to cut you another check are slim to none. I hope I'm wrong! richmke Posted April 27, 2019 #8 Share Posted April 27, 2019 My 2 cents: The check is considered "unclaimed money". They probably put 90 days on there to encourage you to cash it promptly, and so they don't have a lot of valid checks floating out there. As "unclaimed money" they should be pretty good about reissuing a check. FWIW: The expiration date may help with check re-issuance since they don't have to put a stop payment on the old check. Rare Coral Posted April 27, 2019 #9 Share Posted April 27, 2019 I would try to deposit it and see what happens.

If the check bounces, the bank may charge you a $25 returned check fee. Although, I have called companies in the past about expired checks. They told me to deposit it anyway. With "positive pay", the company can flip an electronic switch and reactive the check. Edited April 27, 2019 by richmke

Here in Florida they use make it a point to charge you with for just about anything and not blink an eye. The only recourse you might have is threatening to close all of your accounts and go elsewhere for your banking which isn't hard to do lately since most of our banks are offering special incentives (up to $500 per account) to get people to open new accounts. I see you are in Canada - me too. I would speak to your bank branch manager / supervisor in person, and call Princess customer service (ask to be put thru to cust service - not the initial folks that answer the phone) with the bank rep on the phone too. That way you can all figure out together what the best option is and avoid any fees if the plan doesn't work as discussed. Princess uses a 3rd party company to issue the cheques so some back and forth is required to figure it all out. I'm sure you'll get your money - just will take awhile. I've changed banks. Not that quick and easy. If you have any direct deposits or auto-pay, it may take a couple of months til all is squared away. Further those bank incentives likely are taxable. Probably best to phone Princess, as the bank is not at fault for rejecting a no longer valid check. Edited April 27, 2019 by pms4104
BrittersC Posted April 27, 2019 Author #15 Share Posted April 27, 2019 Thanks everyone. In Canada I can’t just take a photo of the check to deposit it as it doesn’t say that it is in USD, so I had to open up a US account to receive the funds with my bank so I don’t get screwed on the exchange rate again. I’m really hoping that they will re-issue me another check. It completely slipped my mind.

Maybe a $500 winning in the Princess casino. 😄

What? you are wrong... they will cut another check....I am one, who let's just say seems to lose or throws checks away ...the company "owes" the OP money..they want to have their books cleared. Have had several checks reissued ☺️not by "Princess" but by other vendors... How does Princess know the OP even received the check...he could call up on Monday and ask where his refund check is and say he never received it. OP they will issue you another check no worries... Thrak Posted April 28, 2019 #19 Share Posted April 28, 2019 I am still somewhat boggled that someone could simply "forget about" a check for $550. The OP must have a much greater income than I have.

I can assure you it has nothing to do with my income, and all to do with our recent loss.
Fouremco Posted May 3, 2019 #21 Share Posted May 3, 2019 On HAL and Celebrity, we've always had the option of taking any refundable OBC left at the end of the cruise in cash from guest services or have it refunded to our credit card. Does Princess offer any option to issuing a cheque?
BrittersC Posted May 3, 2019 Author #22 Share Posted May 3, 2019 No any remain OBC over $25 they issue you a check. I just spoke with Princess and they are going to re-issue me a check thankfully. It will take 4 weeks but that’s better than nothing! 2
