Cash Account vs Credit Account - Pros/Cons?

Recommended Posts

RCL specific question - I know there are advantages/disadvantages here, but this coming cruise we have mixed OBC from RCL and also the credit card OBC. I remember reading something about the advantage of having one type account over the other when dealing with OBC. My concern being, I had heard that if you leave the ship and there's still OBC left over from your RCL card OBC, and you have a credit card, they take 10%? And, that if you have a cash account, they give you the remainder of the balance in cash?

I am just trying to see the pros and cons of having either a cash or credit account and confirm what I read a while back.

I have never had a cash account, always a credit card account.  I convert VISA points to OBC and if there is any remaining at end of cruise it is returned to my VISA card.  OBC which I have received from RCL must be used or it is lost.  If I book a future cruise I normally get OBC and if my memory serves me correctly they use that first and then use what I convert from points.

There is a difference between a cash account and credit account when it comes to getting a cash advance from the casino.  They charge 5% for cash advances if you have a credit card account, but that is waived if you have a cash account.

With either account, if you have refundable OBC left, you can get that in cash from Guest Services on the last day.  If you don't get your refundable OBC before the last day, they will credit that back to the credit card you used to secure the onboard account.  I'm not 100% sure what they do if you have a cash account and have refundable OBC left.  They may make you go back to Guest Services and take the cash before you leave the ship.

Can't visit casino on Royal because of smoke.  That is why we loved Celebrity...no smoke in casino.  Do not have to worry about cash advance.
