What river cruise lines offer the best value?

Recommended Posts

I'm interested in taking a river cruise.  Done 3 ocean cruises and on the last one we felt like we really weren't getting the local flavor we wanted.

But the river cruises are so expensive!  I'm curious about people's experiences with the various river cruise lines.

Thanks.  Just trying to find one we can afford.  My dream one is the Moscow to St Petersburg cruise.

Be aware that most river cruises include the excursions. Many include beer and wine with meals (of course, some are all inclusive). You have to compare apples to apples when looking at the cost of a river cruise vs. an ocean cruise.

On ocean cruises, I've always found that any local flavor

is best acquired per port when we go ashore, not on the ship itself.

I'm not quite sure what you were expecting...

Here's William the donkey in Tortola

- and narrow pirate alleyways in Charlotte Amalie, St. Thomas USVI

It may depend on where you cruise...or where you have cruised.  I think you get more local flavor in Europe, where most of the ports aren't created/enhanced for tourists.  EM

Take a look at Gate 1 river cruises for a more value priced experience.  As already mentioned, river cruises have a lot of inclusions, which can be airport transfers, tours, alcohol,  and other amenities.

I would suggest  you find a very good Travel Agent that discounts River Cruises (yes, my does) and who has taken several river cruises.  Get her opinion.

Agree with the above.  And don't forget....value is a personal perception and depends on individual preferences.   A value for me might not be a value buy for the person next door.

You will need to enunciate you preferences/wants to an experienced TA.  And not one who is more of a data entry clerk than a TA.
