Cruise insurance, Cancer specific

Just a quick update.

We tried many of your recommendations, some would not insure Michelle's condition and some were a lot more reasonable than we had been quoted, thank you all so much.

We got a cracking deal from Kenhem's recommendation, 'Onestop4insurance'.

They were very thorough and asked relevant questions, which made a huge difference.

We now have an annual policy for a quarter of the cost that we were quoted for a single trip.

Thank you all so much.

This site working at its best.

Fingers crossed for the scan results, we will say a little prayer for her.

We are lucky in comparison as Michelle has been fairly stable for 4 1/2 years, despite being given 6 months to live...

She can't be cured, but they are keeping her stable and stopping the tumour from spreading.

Thank you for the advice and sharing your experiences.

Andy

So sorry to hear about Michelles condition but that is wonderful how she is continuing to fight it and hopefully the doctors might find a way to beat it.

Paulines dad's prostate cancer was in remission for 12 years before he passed away.

Best regards.

Graham.

Thank you Graham.

In lots of ways we feel blessed, we have a fairly good quality of life despite the bad days, but ironically most of her problems are side effects to what is keeping her alive.

We are managing to cruise 3 times a year, so life can't be that bad, next one on Aurora in 2 weeks time, we can't wait.

Your attitude certainly puts a lot of the whinging and moaning on this site into context.

I hope you both have a fantastic cruise, and long may they continue.

We all get a bit lost in our opinions on here, but most are decent, caring people who want to help others, like yourself.

Unfortunately, life throws us all curve balls, we just have to deal with them in whatever way suits us best.

I'm glad you found a suitable policy at a decent price. I've saved a lot of money from advice on here by booking cruises on release so it's nice to be able to help others for a change.

Yes, thanks again.

We are very pleased with the cover and savings, one less thing to worry about.

My wife has had womb cancer and I heart failure, we're both early 60s. We've found Medical Travel Compared usually very competitive for cruise cover  but for an upcoming 28 day Caribbean cruise a company called OneStop4UK came out best, that was £580.

Following advice from an earlier thread, I also took out insurance with Medical Travel Compared and it cost £93 for a 1 week cruise to Spain for my mum (returned this morning). I was getting quotes elsewhere of up to £600 and it was way cheaper than the very cheapest one that I had found (and the other dearer ones I even took off baggage and cancellation insurance too as I purely wanted medical cover on the cruise). I am going to use tham again for her summer 12 night cruise and the quote for that was £140ish.

My mum is 81 and has had 2 strokes, plus multiple medical conditions.

I am not sure if this has been mentioned but if you have been a member of the armed forces you can obtain travel insurance with the Forces Pension Society, which is covered by AXA PPP Healthcare. A major benefit of the policy is that it allows for any pre-existing medical conditions provided you are not travelling against medical advice. It is an annual policy and costs £604 for a worldwide cover up to 65 days and a total of 183 days in a year. It is slightly less if you just want to do European travel. It also covers your spouse.

Thanks Tracey, that sounds a very fair price.

We had quotes from £48 to over £1000 for 1 week but settled on a yearly policy for less than £200 which has all the relevant cover we need.

Long may your mum be able to continue to enjoy cruising.

Unfortunately not ex services, but I'm sure many others will benefit from the tip.

Hi,

I hope you don't mind me jumping on this thread. I was diagnosed with cancer at the end of February. I've just finished chemo and I've been told to get away with my husband and two young girls before my surgery. We are going on a cruise at the end of this week but I can't find anyone that will insure me because of the fact I am due surgery. Can anyone recommed a company that may be able to help me. I've tried the ones mentioned in this thread.

Thanks

Hi Em,

Firstly, so sorry to hear about your condition, keep your chin up, your girls need you smiling.

Sadly, I think you will struggle awaiting surgery, it is usually the first question insurers ask.

All I could suggest is getting a letter/email from your consultant advising you are fit to travel and that your condition is unlikely to cause an issue then call some of the travel insurance specialists, not online, and see how you get on.

Good luck and have a fantastic cruise.

Hi Andy,

Thanks for your kind message. I hope you and your wife are doing well.

Yes, it appears that you are right. I've spoken to several insurers and they are unwilling to insure me until I am post-op. I have partial insurance though, so if I break my leg etc, I will be covered. I'm not going to let this spoil my holiday with my family. We are really looking forward to getting away this weekend.

I would do the same Em.

Have a fantastic time, I think I saw on another thread that you are off to the Fjords on Britannia?

We did this cruise last year, it was absolutely fantastic. The Fjords are stunning and we loved Britannia, so I am sure you will have a great time.

Dont try to overdo it, there are plenty of peaceful spots if you need time out.

Yes, that's right. I can't wait. I am going to soak all of the scenary up, and I'm taking plenty of books so I can relax and read too.

Try All Clear Travel. They were the best and most reasonable for covering my late husband who had category 4 bowel cancer. Managed to get cover for all pre-existing medical conditions  saving over £500 on the first quote we were given with a different insurance company.

Aside from the medical issues, there are two other factors which influence the availability of cancer cover. They are the cancellation cost limit and the number of days. The lower the cost and the lower the days, then more companies to choose from. We went to USA last year, 12 months after cancer surgery. We needed more than 31 days and £10,000 cancellation cover. After ringing all the companies on the cancer insurance list, the only companies that would insure us were Staysure and Allclear. Hope this info may be of some help. They undertake full medical screening.

Good points.

The problem we and others had was that not enough relevant questions were being asked.

Ours was a short, fairly low cost holiday but we were still being quoted over £1,000.

We ended up paying a fraction of that thanks to great advice on this thread.

Unfortunately I have only just seen this thread so this will be too late for Em but I hope it may be useful to someone.

I was diagnosed with incurable stage 4 Ovarian Cancer in 2014 for which I receive on going treatment. I struggled to get appropriate and affordable travel insurance.

I now have a worldwide policy with Open Travel  Insurance who have an over 50’s annual travel scheme especially for members of the Women’s Institute with no medical declarations at a cost of £235. I think this is pretty fantastic and I have even been able to add my husband and 21 year old daughter onto my policy.

Hope this helps.
