First night dining in room - Alaska

What do you cruisers think about having in room dining on the first night of departure out of Vancouver on an Alaska cruise? Are the sights good enough to stay in the room?

Certainly if you just wanted to have a quiet evening meal in your cabin after a long day, I can see it as an option. As far as the "sights", I honestly can't remember spending too much time looking out the windows on the first evening. There would obviously be much more to see as the cruise went along. I did enjoy spending some time on deck watching us leave the Vancouver port, but after that, not much. Of course without thinking too hard, I believe you would need to be on the right side of the ship to see anything.

Heading up the Strait of Georgia, you will have land visible on both sides of the vessel.

 

On clearing Burrard Inlet you will have Bowen Island fairly close on the stbd side. As you head along the Sunshine Coast, land gets progressively further away, until by Lasqueti Island it is about equidistant on both sides. From that point, land is generally closer on the port side until Quadra Island.

 

From the port side, sunsets can be spectacular.

Too much to see as you leave  Vancouver to dine in your cabin, but if you can dine on your balcony it is excellent.

that's very helpful, @zqvol.  Yes, we have a large Balcony and that would be our thought.  @Heidi13, hadn't considered the sunset!

If it's a view you want, why not plan on eating in the buffet where there are usually windows all around on both sides.   Dinner in most buffets is not nearly as hectic as breakfast and lunch.   Many ships also have an outdoor dining area just behind the buffet which would be ideal.    This would allow you see a much broader spectrum of sights on both sides and offer more food choices than dining in your room.

@Kartgv, we are booked in Suite Class, so not sure we have the same views.  But never been on this ship, let alone any ship!

I think this is a good suggestion.

The views from your veranda are not always the best because you may not see both sides unless you have an aft room. Can miss a lot of wildlife on only one side.
