I must have misunderstood I thought they were saying some ships they needed a dedicated card

Perhaps there are some but not the mass market ones. SRF was referring to hotels having that facility but I have not come across any.

If any of your group wears their phone in a neck wallet -- to use its camera at the drop of a hat -- the phone WILL demagnetize your sail-n-spend card. Usually when you are in hurry to get in your room! Then you have to go to the service desk to get it re-magnetized. Ask me how I know.

Nope.

I don't carry a purse or wallet.  I keep my credit card in my phone case (between my phone and the case) and have done so for probably five years or so.  Never a problem.

When on board the ship, I don't need my credit card with me, so I stash it in the safe and put my Seapass card inside my phone case instead.  Never a problem.

They definitely seemed to be the done thing when we last cruised with Carnival in 2013. I'll probably let each of my kids pick one out because they're space cadets and putting their lanyard around their necks will keep them from losing their cards. Honestly, I don't mind wearing one and if I'm wearing a skirt with no pockets (uuugh...) or planning on swimming and not bringing a purse, they're handy to have. I'd be happy if someone provided me one in a gift bag since it's probably not something I'd think to bring myself.

It wouldn't surprise me if European-based cruise lines use that method for cabin power, as it's so common in European hotels.

I actually like them - not only because they help to decrease waste, but because it's a handy place to keep my key card where I won't lose it, and where I'll know to find it again when I'm ready to leave.  It's the like having a bowl for your keys near the front door.

Never come across that, what line was that on?

Not on a cruise line, I have run into it in a couple of hotels.

Not many, but it is annoying.  I carry spare cards to keep the power on, and in these cases, that does not work

Yes, am talking about putting key card in slot.

Can't remember which ships if I am honest..but always carry an old key card. ...I am a chronic overpacker and take ' the kitchen sink' !

I had never thought about using an old card.  Pretty good idea!  Thanks.

I think lanyard use depends on the cruise line.  Our most recent cruise was on Celebrity, and DH and I were very much in the minority since we don’t use lanyards.  I even saw loads of fellow passengers ashore, still wearing their lanyards.

That last sentence of yours?  Makes me want to scream!!!!!

Yes, let's PLEASE try to be a least slightly environmentally correct.  There's no reason or excuse for leaving lights on when you leave a room.

Why?

Even though I do not do it, I don't think people wearing a lanyard ashore makes them a security issue target. Any passenger of a cruise already looks like a tourist and as such is a target.

Because IMneverHO, it makes you (not YOU!) look like a dweeb, a nerd, a geek :)  And except in countries where almost everyone is brown, etc. I do my best not to look like a tourist.  For instance no white tennis shoes.  LOL

Okay, for you, but the majority of passengers would be able to be picked out as a tourist no matter where they go no matter what they look like or how they dress but also by how they act and where they go when visiting a port.

And probably everyone knows you're a tourist anyway.

We just have to accept it -- it takes a lot of practice and skill to look like you belong when you don't, and most of us can't do it (even without wearing a lanyard).  As for looking like a nerd, well, that's true.......I always think of kindergarten kids with their name and class pinned to their shirts.

I swear it's the white tennies 🙂  And 'message' tee shirts.  But, yeah, I know what you're saying.

When we did escorted tours they gave them to us with the tour operator name on one side and then we wrote our first name on the back.  I think it was really more for the tour manager to learn our names.  I never left the coach with it 🙂

Actually anything will work.  A folded up piece of paper works.  Or a business type card.

I wear a lanyard on the ship most of the time.

But not off the ship.

But the same with my work badge.  It is supposed to be tucked away outside the building.

But yes, most tourists look like tourists.

Because you cannot leave the power on.  So when you come back to your room at the end of the day, it is HOT.

From what I've read the AC isn't controlled by that.  Have you had an otherwise experience?

Because it keeps it handy.  And it doesn't fall out of my pocket in the pool or hot tub.  Or I may not even have any pockets.

Ah gotcha.  Things that don't apply to me so I hadn't thought of.  Thanks.

I've seen the slot needing a card for master room power on at least one Royal Caribbean ship... maybe Freedom?  I'm not sure.

I often have an old hotel room card in my luggage, so I just use that.  Or a library card, whatever.

Amazing that they even have to go to such lengths, though, to prevent people from leaving the lights on when they aren't in the room.  How thoughtless!

Oh, we've stayed in tons of hotels, starting in Europe and now more in the US, that do this.  But none of them controlled the AC and I can't find anything confirming that on any reputable site.  Now there are places where if the slider is left open that will turn off the AC.  We had the housekeeper do that (just a minute amount) in Dubrovnik and it was screaming hot in there.

Lanyards are a personal use thing, some like them, some don't. I am pretty much like SRF in this regard.
