Carnival sunrise. The worse ship ever

It may not appear to affect you directly as an individual, but the cumulative effect of filling many cabins to capacity means more people on lines waiting for whatever, more seats taken wherever, more crowding for disembarkation at ports, etc.

I was on this cruise (am the sister and travel companion of Joanne G. who posted a separate review of this cruise), and while we had a good time overall, felt we had to do more strategizing what time to do something or be somewhere to avoid the worst of the crowds, than we have had to do on cruises in the past.

This is true of most summer time/school break cruises.  It will be interesting to see how the reviews of this ship sound when kids are back in school and the ship doesn't have has many passengers on it.  If the Lido is as messed up as these reviews make it sound like, it may not make a huge difference, but I'm just curious.

Your post is making me feel a lot better about our cruise on the Sunrise in September.  Thank you!

Form your own opinion, we found the Sunshine no more crowded than she was as the Destiny and no more than Conquest class ships.   When we toured the Sunrise (two separate occasions) I saw nothing that gave me cause for concern.  We will be sailing on her with a group in July 22.

I think the crowding at the buffet is due to the layout of Carnivals buffets. It was also really crowded on the Breeze in October. Other lines have islands for the layout instead of two long cafeteria style lines. With the islands you just go to the ones you want to get food you don’t have everyone waiting in one lane. It seems like an easy change for them to make as ships go into dry dock. Complain on the surveys.

I was on the Horizon a year ago, the Sunshine about 1.5 years ago, the Miracle, the Glory, the Splendor and the Victory.  I never saw lines like on the Sunrise. There were options and we took advantage of them (grabbing a pre-made salad for lunch, getting fruit, the Asian soup station).  This was the first time I didn't "do the buffet line" in about 25 cruises.

We were on the 14 day Panama Canal cruise and enjoyed the Sunrise very much. It's natural to like some things and dislike others, but going with the flow is part of the cruise experience. We went early to shows in the Liquid Lounge because we were a group of four that wanted to sit together. In the Lido buffet, we staked out tables and went to the food spots in shifts, because the Lido was definitely crowded and had long lines. Check out the Capitano upstairs for breakfast and lunch. More room and very pleasant! We also enjoyed the Lucky Bowl for breakfast and lunch--quicker than the buffet and the food was good.

We talked with the Lido manager (really nice guy always there making sure things went smoothly) about some ways to speed up the lines (he did put the syrup next to the pancakes/French toast per suggestion, rather than having to wait behind people getting their omelets), and Carnival is definitely looking at ways to improve the lines.

Making people walk through the smoky, stinky casino is obnoxious, but I know that's going to be part of just about every Carnival cruise. It's possible to get around the casino walk by using passenger hallways  to go forward or aft first, then heading to the promenade deck, and we did that a lot. I miss some of the promenade seating they did away with from the older layout. There's some seating, but it's just not as... restful, I guess. The Red Frog Pub had some nice table seating for playing games, which we used a lot and which made up for losing the library (our former game-playing hangout). The aft area behind the Lido deck was another often nice place to sit and relax. We didn't find the serenity area to be serene at all; not sure why, just didn't cotton to it.

Sunrise is a nice ship with a great crew. It has good and better things about it, and any ship/cruise is what you make of it. The only truly bad thing I complained about to the company was the (to me occasional) smell of garbage in the aft elevators. It's a real thing and something they should fix.

My wife and I were on the Victory in April. We immediately noticed the food lines and it remained that way for cruise duration. I couldn't imagine putting one more person on that ship...let alone additional cabins.

We experienced much of the same - hard to find seats for the comedy show, long waits for food, crowded public spaces, etc. And that's before this apparent transition.

We're on the Breeze in August with a large family trip. I'm hoping for the best. If it's a poor experience, then we're likely going to go back to RCL.

Carnival's goal (or any cruise line, for that matter) is to fill their ships to capacity. As has been discussed in this thread, they're already redesigning ships, both old and new, to add more & more cabins. That does more to contribute to the large crowds, especially on these older, smaller ships that are being remodeled. I'm willing to bet that it's pretty rare that people willingly book 5 adults in interior cabins. Regardless, having a handful of interior cabins with 5 people in them is going to have minimal affect on the overall crowds.

Agree....that's exactly what I meant about "5 people in a cabin".  It wouldn't be me in there....but for the area they paid for....they took up 2.5 times the space in the theatre, the buffet etc than my husband and me.

Is that why you'd like to see Carnival decrease their cabin capacity...because more people in a single cabin take up more space in public areas than you and your husband? I'm sorry, but that's just silly. Key words in your comment are...they paid for it. That interior cabin may have been filled to capacity, but there were plenty of other cabins that weren't. So the number of seats taken up in the theater more than likely wouldn't have changed just because your neighbors had 5 people in one cabin. What if they had 5 people in two cabins, which seems to be more to your liking. Those 5 people take up the same space on the ship regardless of how many cabins they occupy. It seems like you're upset because they paid to take advantage of a cabin capacity limit that's set by Carnival.

Ok, just off this ship today and this is what I posted in the Carnival Sunrise Facebook page if anyone sees that as well

Let me start with, we had a good time. This is because we were with family

However, this was my 19th Cruise and first with Carnival.

Have sailed Disney, Princess, Royal Caribbean and Celebrity. And based on this trip, probably won’t sail Carnival again. It was our least favorite ship.

Embarkation was delayed and received an email the night before to come an hour later.  Parking at the port was closed with no notice.  We were told to drive down the block and park at an icon parking lot. Well, that one was full, drive further and finally found a lot ($182 for 4 nights) and drag our luggage for blocks.

We get to terminal and had to stand in the LATE line because of this.

Get in our cabin and bathroom smells. Finally figured out it was the shower curtain. Weird and funky smell. We were in 2087 and had no drawers to put clothing, which seemed  quite odd.

Faint sewer smell by elevator and also by staircase/elevator when you leave the Restaurant for dinner

Had dinner at El Capitano and in order to get there, you had to walk though Lido buffet and climb the stairs because every other entrance was blocked

The walkways to go the the buffet are so narrow because they jammed a drink station and food venues on either side.  It backed up everyday with people trying to sidestep their way in.

There was always a line for the buffet, and the food was mediocre at best.

Sunshine brunch took so long to get served, had to wait 10 minutes just to get coffee.

Carnival is supposed to be a Fun Ship but it seemed all the nightlife was done by midnight.

Pixels was a cluster of people trying to find photos. Why they didn’t upgrade to digital is beyond me and they wasted so much by printing everything and having them thrown away

Candy store is so small.

If you wanted to see the comedy show it took a treasure map to find it. Actually the layout of the ship did not flow at all.

The casino was smoky and oftentimes the smoke leaked into hallways as well. My eyes were red and watering most nights.

We really like the Red Frog Bar. Every night they had great singers and events. Trivia etc. the bar tenders and servers were wonderful.

Alchemy bar was great and I highly suggest the Cucumber Sunrise drink.

The BBQ place was delicious and thankfully not long lines and we had hamburger and fries everyday (but this was also because Lido was always crowded)

Food stations closed early when most people were coming back onboard from being in port to find they couldn’t eat unless they got pizza or room service.

Being on deck 2 and taking our own luggage saved the day with disembarking. We carried our bags up one flight to get off.  We were supposed to get off earlier but for some reason it started later than posted.

Again, we had a good time. We always do on a cruise. We have been through hurricanes and missed ports too. We just did not like this ship. It’s layout was bad and nightlife left us wanting.  I would suggest looking at a different ship.  I’m sure it isn’t a Carnival thing per se, most likely a ship thing.

80’s deck party was fun! Bring glow necklace or get dressed up.

Anyway, definitely take into consideration things that people report that you think would be important to you. Long food lines were really bummer and the congestion of passageways

Oh, one other thing to watch out for.
We booked the Thermal Spa pass for couples and got the 20% coupon and paid for it in April.

We get onboard and have a spa charge on our account. Then we have a credit for what we paid, but wait, it’s not the same amount.

The spa added a 15% gratuity for us to go sit in a sauna. No one was giving me a massage. I had no personal service from any spa employee.

I went there and had it taken off the last day. But I wonder how many people do not notice this.

So a typical NY embarkation, an hour late embarking, you getting lost parking, coming back late on board and food items closed. A “funky” smelling shower curtain and the topper of a Smokey casino (which is pretty much every Carnival ship) and  a layout like all other Carnival ships are the reasons you will not sail CArnival again?  Oh wait, I forgot the Candy store being to small...how big was the candy store on Disney, Royal, Celebrity?

I wanted to give the good and bad of this cruise. I also wanted to mention the things that they show as being special which was the candy store. Photo of it makes it look like it is something special.  I could care less about it.

Yes, the bathroom smelled disgusting, the ship was just refurbished and should smell like that.  Yeah, smoky casino is a big deal, I like to gamble too. Other lines seem to be able to have better ventilation.

I live in NY, I’m quite familiar with parking here. Did not get lost. We were set to park at the pier.  They closed that parking. No one was there to give info, we waived someone down and they said to go to icon. It was full, we then had to find somewhere else further away.  I did leave on time, I did follow their instructions, and then they close parking and then penalize me for being late? Yeah, not a good start.

I also enjoy night life, and was so surprised that there wasn’t much of it.  So, since I have more invested in other lines and their perks that I now receive, I can honestly say, at this point, I don’t feel that Carnival is a great fit.

This was a cruise that was impromptu with family and wanted to leave from NY, so it was what it was.  I believe that I represented what I liked and disliked. I do the same for Royal and Celebrity, Disney and Princess. And In comparison, I like those options more.

I don't ever book cruises during peak times of the year when kids are out of school so I'm hoping the ships aren't at max capacity.  Hoping our FEB 22, 2020 cruise on Sunrise isn't packed and we enjoy the new renovations.  We have a spa balcony and I'm looking forward to it.  Not a sun lover so no interest in a chair around the pool that people always complain about not getting.  We also avoid peak times for meals so I'm not worried about that either.  We have breakfast around 10 in the dining room and other meals seem to work out just fine.

Happy cruising everyone!

Did I imply you were not stating what you liked and disliked?  Other than the few things you mentioned, you seem to have a good cruise.  I was having issues why you would see those as reasons not to cruise Carnival again.  If you prefer other cruise lines, then sail them.  You felt there was more night life on a Celebrity cruise than the Sunrise?  That I would question....  All in all, where you cruise and what you like and dislike are of course up to you.  You are correct on the bathroom smell, all were new 2 months ago, makes me wonder what is up with that.  Happy cruising

How can one expect more space on a ship when they stuff passengers in like sardines?

Personally...we had a great time.  We were flexible with the buffet, had no problem getting off in ports, always had prime theatre seats and never had a problem getting a chair on the lido.  No embarkation issues and no disembarkation issues either.  My husband, who really isn't into cruising really liked this ship and wants to go on it again.

My biggest complaint is about the casino....not the smell....the greediness!

We cruise Celebrity in Europe, usually a more port intensive cruise. But amazingly, yes, Celebrity had things going on until about 1am. We enjoyed the silent disco too. And dancing with different style of music as well and shows and Trivia.  Royal we tend to do more of the Caribbean type, although we did Baltic and were also quite happy with their nightlife.

Having always heard of the Fun Ship name, I was just very surprised about the lack of things to do late night.

I know, we were quite frankly pleasantly surprised about it. But glad to have it as well, because we were also stuck in an unexpected port for a few days and missed some places we really wanted to see (Florence, Pisa, Portofino) but horrible storms kept us there.  Then our ship broke loose and hit the Costa Magica docked next to us.  It was crazy weather. Land slides in Italy and France.

But we loved the Aqua cabin (like spa cabin) so much, we booked again for this year (a few weeks earlier) hopefully avoiding weather issues. It’s a crap shoot really though.

I don't like large crowds any more than it sounds like you do. But as I've said previously, I think a crowded feel on the Sunrise has more to do with the addition of all the new cabins, not the handful of cabins that have 5 people in them. That ship, the Sunshine, and upcoming Radiance, are from a different era of cruising. Older & smaller. They weren't originally designed to hold as many as they do now with all the new cabins added. I couldn't care less if 5 adults want to squeeze into a cabin. What I don't like is this concept of sacrificing open spaces and popular public areas just to add more cabins. Such as making the theater & comedy clubs smaller. More people + smaller main venues = the long lines to get into the theater & comedy shows that I've read so much about (or having to show up a half hour early just to get a decent seat). With as much money as CCL makes every year, and Carnival Corp. as a whole, I wished they wouldn't worry so much about stuffing in more cabins for more revenue.

I was also on the 10 day trip. Worst cruise ever. NO..... Carnival did screw the ship up, YES, cutting the lido buffet area in half  and adding more cabins was really stupid, but crying over it will not work.... Alot of first timers on that cruise so you have to figure ways  around them like I did. When we all got onboard you could see the confusion of the passengers and the crew. Refub boat and new crew = HELP.. if you want to complain write to carnival and tell them.. instead tell others ways around that mess were on, breakfast as said, in cucina ,no one in it, also on sea days, eat in the dining room, lunch , don't have it at the same time as everyone else, 4,000 people on board when there should be 3200, makes Long lines, every where, as I said carnival screwed this one up and I will call them tomorrow and complain..  my wife and I had a great time and the great weather is always a plus. NEVER been on a bad cruise, have been on 50+ Cruise's and enjoy your time and make the best of it ,as you can.. have had, hurricane's and really bad seas and am lucky that we don't get sea sick, make the best of your next cruise and enjoy not being at work, because,  work sucks, not cruising...

Never been on a bad cruise, but you are going to call and complain?  Color me confused.

Interesting, I spent 9 days on the sunshine and never felt nearly as crowded as I did the entire time on the breeze.

I also really like how they clear the comedy club on the sunshine out after every show. It let's more people get a chance to see a show without the same people posting up in there the entire night

We were on the Sunshine in early Dec of last year.  We didn't notice massive crowds everywhere - yeah, there was usually a line up for the Comedy club for the second and subsequent showings, so that might get annoying if you are a die hard comedy fan and can't make the first show.

I would argue that point. I would agree that Sunshine has the nicest looking Serenity area, but the area itself is anything but serene. Due to its location right next to the Lido pool deck, it is usually loud on all 3 decks of the Serenity area. The third level is the quietest, but it often gets closed due to high winds (this is a problem on other ships too with a Serenity area located at the front of the ship).  In my book, Spirit class ships have by far the nicest Serenity areas.

We liked the variety of "exposure to the Lido" areas in the Serenity area.  If you wanted, you can sit looking aft and people watch all the shenanigans of the Lido pool.  And it was easy enough (for us, at least) to grab a spot further forward, away from the Lido music - maybe not a pod all the time, but more often than not.  Maybe we just got lucky?

The third level was never closed for us due to winds, but again, maybe luck?  (One of the areas near the bar was partly closed while they did some painting or something, maybe on a port day - can't remember specifically, it obviously didn't bother me enough to sink in.)

Anyway, we'll be on Radiance next December, so we will use these Sunrise reviews as guidance, if not gospel.

Check out some pics I took  - hopefully, you'll agree that many pictures reflect a shiny, polished ship that isn't overstuffed to the brim with too many people. You can ALWAYS find someplace quiet if that's what you're looking for. Here are the pics.

Thanks for the photos!  Great shots!

I think that what some people consider "over-crowded" is what others consider "vibrant and humming".  It will be interesting to see whether anything is done to "fix the problem" in key areas, or whether it is considered a good sign by the Carnival execs that some places are crowded and obviously "in demand", and as long as cabins and sailings keep selling out...

. . . . .  However, DH and I didn't rush to get off the ship in ports and in all seriousness, I live in Manhattan, NYC.  I'm used to crowds...in the subways, elevators, lines for the bathrooms in theatres etc.  That's "my norm"  and it greatly affects my perspective as compared to someone from "not NYC".

carol louise, my sister, also lives in NYC - which is why she wants some relief from huge crowds while on vacation!
I live in a small town, and while I don't like lines and crowds, it doesn't get to me as much as it does to her because I do not deal with it every day.  We all react differently.  😄

We do agree with you and your husband about not rushing off the ship.  We waited until about 3:15 to get off at Grand Turk, and by that time some were heading back already, and chairs in the shade became available at the Margaritaville pool.  We had enough time, and it was after the worst heat of the day.    That is typical of how we strategize to avoid the crowds as much as possible.
