Excursion in Ketchikan

We've never done an excursion when in Ketchikan--we just like walking around.  Favorite spots:  walking up Mill St. to see the huge totem pole in Whale Park.  Just beyond is Fish Creek where there are quaint little shops and a tram up to the Cape Fox Lodge which has a collection of Totem Poles and wonderful views.  There is also the Tongass Historical Museum near Fish Creek and closer to the waterfront is the SE Alaska Discovery Center which has wonderful displays.

Don’t think this is a must do but it’s sure different. We went snorkelling in Ketchikan and had lot of fun. The guide told us about the sea creatures in the area. We were not allowed to touch or disturb the sea creatures we encountered unless it was handled by the guide. Now we can proudly say we snorkelled in Alaska! We wore wetsuits and didn’t feel cold (in August).

We used Ketchikan taxi tours Tim White is the owner.  His son Eric picked us up early to take us to Herring Cove where we saw black bears, otters, and many eagles. It was very reasonable for 3 hours and he will give you an overview as well of everything on the island. It is nice to have a car and driver at your disposal. Up to 4 people was only around $300. He even threw his rod and reel into the stream and brought up several different species of Salmon and held them in his hands to show us and then returned them to the stream. He clearly loves his job and goes the extra mile.

We did the Deadliest Catch excursion (aka Bearing Sea Crab Fisherman's Tour which we booked independently, not through the cruise line) and it was SUPER fun and educational. Great for all ages. We were a group of 6 people ages 75, 43, 39, 10, 10 and 6.5 and we all thought it was really fun.

Correct...if you book it yourself as you know you can get there early and have your pick of seats before the ship excursions show up.
