Beware of the Arcade on RCCL...

Recommended Posts

My point is on drink pkg is that RC blames a “GLITCH” in system when something goes wrong. Not them owing up to the mistake.   AND this “glitch” went on for several hours even after they knew about it.  At one point they said they were going to honor the price, then no—/ now not sure.   Also, it was reported you would receive a refund/credit which takes 5 to 7 business days, but also during that same time (while waiting for your refund) you can purchase a drink pkg at the higher rate.  Now RC could have that extra $$ sitting there.

Thank you for posting this as a lesson learned. No one person or situation is perfect (although some on here seem to think so) and these things happen. We experienced issues with the Arcade in our December cruise. It would charge our card even though the games were out of service or not working properly. I appreciate the heads up and what to look for!

Setting a card to "No Charging" and getting that reversed if they play with credits in the Arcade is absolutely asinine and deceptive.

Many "gift" or "credit" you purchase from Royal requires convoluted redemption process or is loaded with "gotchas".  It just doesn't feel like a fair and transparent way to conduct business.

Thanks to this thread I will NOT purchase Arcade Credits for our upcoming cruise with a 4, 8, and 11 year old.  We will leave charging ability off and if they want to be in arcade and adult will be supervising and swiping one at a time.

this thread encouraged me to post on asking how to establish a cash account and some questions peripheral to that if you want to pop in there.

Which of course is covered in another sub-section of the novel that are the RCI T&C.

Since these novels are written by lawyers, the advice should be to seek independent legal advice. Suggesting non-lawyers can reach an exact understanding by reading T&C (and all the associated and referenced documents) is poor advice.

well in this case it is pretty clear to me that if I use up my credit they will keep charging  as stated in their terms specific to arcade credit. Guest will not be notified once Arcade Credits are depleted; additional arcade play will be charged to guest’s Seapass at current onboard prices  didn't need any legal counsel to know exactly what would happens if I use up my credit. If we just do a little reading most likely will not need to follow your advice to "seek independent legal advise".

Yes but when you set the seapasses to have no charging privileges then you should be able to believe at that point that the children will not be able to play past the funds loaded on those cards.  That may be where the disconnect is.  Fine print says charged to seapass, parents remove charging power and add arcade credit, credit is used and they are able to charge more games but nothing else?  Hmm...

Correct, when an account has no charging ability, then there should be no charges.  Seems a simple concept, and yet, for some odd reason, the arcade charges somehow cannot be controlled.  If I didn't know how bad Royal's IT was, I would say this is a planned "mistake", but I can believe that they don't have the IT skill to solve the problem.

I can’t agree with you more...this thread basically means my kids will not be using the arcade on any Royal ships. I don’t want to read fine print about arcade credits—-that’s absolutely ridiculous.

I am also moving close to using the cash accounts.

We moved to cash accounts some time ago and do not regret it.  Less hassle for us, no surprise charges and no fee (as of now) if you need cash from your account.

Other some minor sodas from the fridge being charged to my account, I've never had a big problem that GS could not resolve.  I'm disciplined enough to look at my account transactions every day/night via the I/A TV.

Take immediate action for any misapplied charges.

Discipline for you, common sense for me I guess.  I check my account daily on the ship also.  In my post I was actually referring to the mystery charges that many people report getting on their cards days (or sometimes weeks) post cruise.  That cannot happen if you have a cash account.

I had one of those phantom charges post 3 weeks ago from another cruise line.  I had my final invoice and submitted to AMEX disputing the overage.  It was refunded to me, but I wonder how many people simply wouldn't notice another $5, 10, 100, 250 added to their total at a later date?

Your comment is totally irrelevant to the subject at hand.  In a situation like this, whether it was a cash account or a credit card account, the same thing would have happened.

If the kids ran up a balance on a cash account, you'd still have to go to Guest Relations on the last night and pay the balance -- having a cash account doesn't mean you don't have to actually pay the bill!  If your bill isn't paid in full, you won't be allowed to scan off the ship on the final morning.

And while YOU may not see a benefit of setting up your account with a credit card, the vast majority of the thousands of people on the ship don't want to spend their last evening of the cruise standing in line at Guest Relations.

Can you imagine on a Freedom class or larger ship, a line of over 2,000 people at Guest Relations the last night????  (That's assuming that most staterooms are a couple/same household, so only one person from each stateroom would need to go pay the bill.)

With a cash account on a short cruse the limit is $300 before they notify you and $500 for longer ones . We are not rich like you and a $800 ( AU $ 1,142.00 ) would really hurt us and still would have to go to GS .

Thank's Nashna for your warning

This is hows it worked on all of our cruises except the last one.  On Allure, no need to recharge the Seapass card, each swipe at a game charged the card $2 or whatever.  I couldn’t figure out why they’d have a different system and a system that wouldn’t allow a set arcade credit to be placed on the Seapass that would run out. Kids could just charge and charge with no credit limit, but there was a large daily limit.

This was my experience on the Allure, as soon as the kids credits were done (we were counting) we used it a few more times ($7 or $8) without recharging. We also had to initially activate the cruise planner credits through the casino.

Edit: This is with charging turned off on their cards.

Thank you for this post.. just revoked the charging privileges for my kids on the next cruise, we bought them arcade credits but I would like to know when these run out and they need more.. not an open account.

The problem seems to be is that if your kids don’t have charging privileges, and have the arcade card, they will be able to charge your account after the prepaid arcade funds are used up.

Never keep a cc of file.  Set up a cash account and settle in cash or with a cc on the last night.  There is no benefit to setting up your account with a cc.

Would setting up a cash account prevent charges in the arcade?

Good question.  I'm thinking it would not have prevented charges, because the charges would have accumulated the same way.  Perhaps if the charges were all on one account, and that account reached the $300 or $500 credit limit on cash accounts, maybe that would have stopped the charges since that is a different function.
