2nd timers back from the Sunrise - Trip Report

We returned from our cruise on the Sunrise last week and I’m going to attempt a bit of a trip report :)

 

A wee bit about us:

Me – Julie

DH – John

DD – Abbey

DS – Lewis

This is our second cruise – you can read about our first cruise on the Conquest last year here – and once again we were visiting our eldest son, Mark, who plays guitar in the band on board the ship, the ‘Hip Stars’

 

Here we all are on the Conquest last year:

 

 

Leading up to booking we had to wait for Mark to arrange things for us. He’d been on the ship as Triumph from New Orleans, was home for a few weeks and then flew to Fort Lauderdale for rehearsals and then Cadiz to join the ship, before travelling to Virginia on the ship to start cruising as the Sunrise. Our cruise was finally booked only a couple of months before travelling and I think we were lucky to get on this sailing as it seemed to be pretty full, it may even have sold out.

 

Being from Scotland we decided to add in a couple of days in New York before and after the cruise to make the most of our travel time. Having looked through my photos of the cruise we didn’t actually take that many of much but food, lol, but hopefully this will turn out ok. So, on with the story :)

 

Saturday 22 June

We left Glasgow with United airlines at 9:00am and enjoyed a smooth flight. When I’d booked the flight I couldn’t pick 4 seats together and got a message advising that our seats would be assigned during check in. This turned out to work in our favour and we ended up in the premium seats with more legroom and all sitting together.

 

The seatback tv’s were at hit and a miss with my son’s working, but no sound from the headphones. My headphones worked ok but the tv kept buffering which was annoying. I eventually switched to watching tv via the United app I’d downloaded to my phone. It had much more content on it too. Approx 7 hours and 30 minutes later we landed in Newark to a beautifully sunny day.

 

****I’m about to enter into full tourist mode  This was our first time in New York, having wanted to visit for years. I researched loads before the trip and am fully aware that the subway, airtrain would get us to Manhattan quickly and cheaply, however with almost a fortnight worth of luggage we decided to be 100% tourists and get a yellow cab from the airport. We made a conscious decision to do what we wanted, how we wanted regardless of the cost (within reason) as we may never be back here ******

 

So, even with our decision made, I actually thought we might never make it to Manhattan as our taxi driver was an absolute maniac….Your car horn definitely needs to work in New York!

Breathing a sigh of relief, we arrived at our hotel, Cambria on 28th Street between 6th & 7th Avenues. Checked in, we headed to our room which we were happy with.

 

 

 

The air con was fantastic, coffee pot, microwave, fridge included. Iron & ironing board in the wardrobe and hairdyer provided. After dropping our bags we headed out and wandered down 6th Avenue to get our bearings. We weren’t far from The Empire State building which we would be visiting tomorrow. It felt so odd to actually be here after seeing the city in so many films and tv programmes over the years.

 

After grabbing some drinks from Subway, we made our way to one of the stops for the City Sightseeing bus tour and hopped on the Downtown loop. I’d pre-purchased tickets for 48 hours covering all loops and one attraction. If you only have a couple of days to visit Manhattan I’d really recommend this as it gives you a whistle stop tour without too much effort.

 

I don’t remember every name of every building but I recognised so much. I think we started on 5th Avenue past Saks and the Flatiorn building. Here are some photos we took along the way.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Starting to feel hungry we got off near the Rockefeller Centre and searched for some food. We actually ended up inside the centre and enjoyed some much needed burgers/fries. After this we were all a bit woozy realising that it was about midnight our time. 

We walked back to the hotel, which should only have taken about 20 minutes but seemed to take forever. We grabbed some drinks in the hotel reception and then crashed out for the night.

Sunday 23 June

We all slept well, however woke up at various times of the early hours thinking it was time to get up. I honestly woke at 3am thinking it must be at least 8am and was stunned to see the time, lol.

All up and organised we headed out to enjoy the day. We grabbed a quick breakfast and made our way up 7^th Avenue towards Times Square.

 

 

 

 

I'd expected it to be very busy and of course it was. Again, seeing so many things that look so familiar was surreal.

 

We are all Disney fans so of course had to have a wee nosey around the Disney Store. I had a look at the NY specific merchandise but didn’t see anything much I wanted.

 

 

Abbey sent some time in Sephora and got some make up from her list.

 

Our plan today was to do the uptown loop on the bus, stopping off at Central Park for a more chilled day. There are tons of people trying to sell the bus tour tickets but they’re also really helpful if you tell them you already have tickets and need directions. We asked where to pick up the uptown tour and were directed to 8^th Avenue. We'd also popped into the bus company store near Ripley's to check the validity of the Empire State Building tickets we had. I'd read on a NYC forum that morning that this particular company didn't include ESB and people were being turned away because they hadn't updated their website.....the lady we spoke to was very glum and said it wouldn't work, then phoned someone who said it would, then told us it would all be ok.....Not convinced I knew there was another office so we went there and spoke to a really nice lady who said it would be fine. Don't believe everything you read on forums folks 

 

We hopped on the bus at the stop we were directed to (the front said ‘in training’) and after about 2 minutes I realised we were going downtown…..During this we drove through Times Square and were told to look up at the high wire that would be walked tonight and would be televised on NBC.

 

 

 

 

 

 

Eventually the bus stopped on 5th Avenue and we got off, found our way back to another stop and this time got on the correct bus.

We started the uptown tour and within minutes the atmosphere really changed to a more calm area. We passed  lots of stunning buildings.  I really loved this area:

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

The bus did a full loop through Harlem and back down 5th Avenue beside Central Park. I really enjoyed all the information the tour guide on the bus gave us.

 

I knew we’d never see all of Central Park in the time we had, so after some research we’d agreed to enter the park near to 72^nd St. We got off the bus and soon we were in the park and grabbed hot dogs/drinks from a food cart.

 I’d downloaded apps for the sightseeing bus and also a fantastic app called CityMaps2Go. It works offline with hundreds of downloaded city maps. You create a customised list of the places you want to visit and they are pinned on the map for you. It’s so easy to use and you can see at a glance how to get to your next destination. Huge thumbs up for this.

 

Soon we were at the Bethesda Fountain. It was beautiful here.

 

 

 

 

 

Abbey wanted to spend some time on the lake and we used our app map to find our way.

 

 

There was a bit of a queue for a boat and I think we waited about 15 minutes which I thought was ok. We had so much fun, even if it did take John a few minutes to remember how to row a boat, lol. The cost was $15, with a $20 deposit which is returned if you return the boat within 1 hour.

We were on the sunrise and the hip stars were good.

We grabbed some ice creams which were delicious from the cafe beside the boat hire.

 

 

Next up was the bow bridge.

 

 

 

After relaxing for a while on the grass with some drinks, I checked the bus app and we made our way back to the same stop we’d got off on 5th Avenue. We completed the uptown loop and had really enjoyed the day so far. The buildings are so beautiful and I love hearing about the history of them from the tour guide.

 

We hopped off at a shared stop and changed to the downtown tour again. Abbey wanted to visit a shop that we had intended to visit yesterday but were just too tired to do. So we were off again, seeing the same stuff as yesterday, lol.

 

 

We headed down to the lower east side (check me out being all New York  )  and walked across town to the shop which I think was near Ludlow St. Abbey visited a shop that she follows on Youtube called Round 2. She picked some shirts and was happy to get some photos with the shop owners. 

 

Exhausted now, we agreed that we wouldn’t walk back for the bus but hail a cab instead. We found one easily and were soon back at our hotel.

 

Our plans this evening were to visit the Empire State Building and we wanted to make sure it was dark. Too tired to look for a restaurant for dinner, we agreed to make use of the roof top bar/bistro at the hotel. There wasn’t much of a view to look at, but the food was nice and it was lovely to just relax.

 

 

After this we had a rest in our room and switched on the tv to watch the tight rope walk in Times Square. I'm so glad we didn't even consider going to try and watch it live. The scenes on the tv were crazy, it was so busy. The programme seemed to drag on forever, but the tightrope walkers did a great job and by the time they were finished it was nice and dark outside.

 

 

Around 10pm we headed out of the hotel and made our way to the Empire State Building. I was beyond excited. Before the trip we’d all picked 1 thing we all wanted to do, and this was my choice. I don’t know why, probably all the films I’ve watched, but the Empire State Building just seemed to be New York for me. Always, always wanted to visit.

 

 

 

Tickets scanned, through security and we were in!

 

 

Before long we were inside the lift to zoom us up to the 79^th floor. The roof display inside the lift was really good. It was a bit busy though so I forgot to take photos. We changed into another lift and soon were on the 86^th floor and outside. The view was spectacular.

We got some souvenirs from the gift shop including a really lovely book all about the ESB (which I haven't actually read yet) and some presents for home.

We had all really enjoyed ourselves here - a lifetime ambition of mine completed 

 

It was almost midnight by now and as we exited the ESB we found ourselves inside a shop so picked up some snacks for later, courtesy of a very dour (google it, lol) looking cashier.

 

 

John's 'thing' he wanted to do was to have a slice of NY pizza. So we stopped at one of the many shops along the way back to our hotel and he and Lewis grabbed a slice of cheese pizza. I took a very unflattering photo of him, but we were all laughing so much because he couldn't pick it up, it was so hot.

 

 

Anyway, they both loved the pizza 👍

 

Soon back in our hotel, I sorted some things around in our suitcases and put our Carnival luggage tags on our bags. As good as our day had been, tomorrow was going to be even better. It was cruise day and that meant just one thing to me - I was going to see my boy!

Thank you! Yes they will be, they sign off mid October when the ship moves port back to Virginia. 👍

Question for you: having just disembarked, would you consider the Sunrise to be a refurbished ship or a brand new ship? Curious to hear your thoughts...

 

I've only ever been on one other ship before, the Conquest, so I don't really have much to compare it to. We really enjoyed our time there. There isn't anything that would put me off going on it again.

Monday 24 June

After another good night's sleep, we were up, packed and organised by about 9am. Our check-in time for the cruise was between 1 - 1:30pm. On port days, Mark will often leave the ship and head to the nearest coffee shop for wifi so he can download some things for the next cruise. He also uses this time to get some shopping and enjoy some time away from the ship. Because of this, we didn't try to change our check-in time (not sure if you can even do that) and wanted to let him have some time to explore NY as he hadn't much time there at all so far. 

 

We dropped our luggage with the concierge. I asked about transport to the cruise terminal and they said they could call a car service for us or we could hail a cab. Hailing a cab would be less expensive but I didn't want to trail our luggage onto 6th Avenue and dodge the passing cyclists etc. We don't use uber and to be honest the cost wasn't bothering me at this point so we asked them to arrange for a car. 

 

Off we went to enjoy our morning. We grabbed a quick breakfast at the McDonald's at the end of our street (the pancakes, called hotcakes in here, are delicious.) I know there will be a million places in NY where would could get a more authentic breakfast but time was of the essence and simple and quick was the priority today.

 

Lewis' 'thing' he had wanted to do was go to the guitar centre just off Times Square. Apparently Eric Clapton's guitar was in there somewhere. Lewis is a budding musician too and plays guitar and drums really well. 

 

We enjoyed our stroll down 7th Avenue and were at the guitar shop just as it opened at 10am. 

 

The staff in here were so nice. Lewis played a couple of guitars.

 

 

 

We had a look around, but couldn't find the Eric Clapton guitar (we have more about this much later...) so he bought some new strings and some other bits to take home. Whilst we were in here, Mark called to say that he and his friend were going to Central Park for the morning. We had a nice chat and said we'd message when we were on the ship.

 

There wasn't anything specific we wanted to do this morning so spent some more time in the shops. Back to the Disney store for a mooch around.

 

 

 

We were all looking forward to seeing Toy Story 4 when we got home. 

 

 

We picked up some frappes at Starbucks and sat in the sun for a bit whilst Abbey did some shopping. Then it was time to head back towards the hotel. We'd worked out that it took about 20 minutes to get from Times Square so we took our time enjoying the sights.

I took a picture of this man at the Singer sewing machine. I'd seen it from the bus tour but didn't get a photo. I loved the large needle and button beside it too but couldn't photo it from the ground. There used to be a Singer factory in Clydebank, not far from where we live, and my mum still has my gran's original Singer machine that was bought in 1950, so I thought she'd appreciate this photo.

 

 

Back to the hotel and we were soon on our way with our lovely driver Frederick. It only took about 20 minutes to get there and we'd timed it perfectly. Frederick was a bit embarrassed about the fare price, $55, and said a cab would have been much cheaper. We explained that we knew that and that we really just wanted some convenience. We asked if he did airport runs and he said it would be $95 flat rate to Newark Airport from our hotel. So we booked him on the spot and swapped emails. He was so nice.

 

Anyway, we were at the ship!!!

 

We found the embarkation process very quick. We got to the line at exactly 1pm and the agent checking the boarding passes looked at me and smiled - she said 'perfect!' like she was relieved we were actually there at the correct time, lol. We followed the line through security and spoke to an agent at the guest services desk about our cash account. 

 

******OK, so I'm going to address this here because I read SO MANY threads about this and I'm actually astounded at some peoples opinions on having a cash account. I actually purchased cruise cash before boarding and was almost too scared to ask any questions about it on this board as there can be some very, very judgemental views about it. Some indicating that you must be unable to manage your money if you don't assign a credit card to your account   Surely the very definition of managing your money is setting a budget and sticking to it? 

 

Anyway, here are MY reasons for purchasing cruise cash and CHOOSING to have a cash account:

 

Exchange rate: We are from the UK therefore need to take into account the exchange rate. I have a fantastic travel card called Revolut which gives a higher exchange rate than anywhere else I can find. However it works like a debit card so if I was to assign that, it would probably get eaten up in hold charges. So, I used this card to purchase $500 cruise cash instead. I knew we'd use it all up as had planned to eat at the Steakhouse one night and also knew that if we didn't use it all, I could go to the casino to cash it out after playing a slot machine. The exchange rate on my credit card is so much lower, they also charge a transaction fee too.

 

Cash: I'd been on countless holidays before I discovered the Revolut card and ended up coming home with currency left over. There's a much lower rate when you try to change it back and I hate that feeling of never knowing if you have enough cash with you. I knew I'd need cash whilst in NY and also in Bermuda to pay for taxis etc but didn't want to have too much with me. So I paid using my card where I could and saved some cash for the cruise which I knew I could add if I needed to. If we didn't use it on the cruse, then I knew we would have an extra day in NY to use it up. 

 

Convenience: I'm a planner, list maker, whatever you want to call it  and to me having as much as possible pre-paid before we go is a massive plus in my head. 

 

Credit Card: I have a credit card which I rarely use. We had it with us and could have used it if we needed to. But, from what I understand UK cards don't get the same benefits as many of the US cards have such as rewards etc. I don't know anyone who pays for the everyday expenses on a credit card in the UK because there just isn't the incentive to do it. 

 

As it turns out, we used up the cruise cash and didn't need to add anything to it, so my plan worked perfectly  ******

 

The agent at the desk said that she couldn't see the cruise cash on the account, but that this was nothing to worry about and that we would see it on the ship. It's a bit of a shame that they make you go to this desk to be told that you didn't need to do anything, but hey ho, no big deal. It wasn't busy. 

 

Off we went aboard the ship. It was exactly 1:15pm so it had only taken us 15 minutes to get through the full check in process. That's really good I think 👍

 

We sent Mark this photo and then headed down 1 deck to deck 2 to wait for our room to open up.

You’re something else. Someone’s doing a nice serious report and you jump in with your childish stuff. And nobody has said it was a BRAND NEW ship. Grow up.

The OP wouldn't need to sail on the ship when it was on the Carnival Triumph. As someone who never sailed on that ship, perhaps OP may be the best person to assist us with this concern. The OP should be able to tell if there was a renovation or if it was a new build- just as you should be able to tell if a hotel was recently renovated or even reflagged without previously staying there.

 

Please help me understand your thought process.

We waited for a whole 15 minutes  before opening the door to our corridor and along to our rooms. The only rooms available to Mark to book for us were interior rooms and I'll be honest, after having a balcony room last time I was a tad apprehensive. 

 

 

John and I were in 2219 and the kids were in 2215 - next door to each other on the starboard side. ****quick question...why do we not call the front and back of the ship the bow and stern, but instead refer to them as forward and aft?****

 

Anyway, we were right at the front of the ship on the right hand side,  I was actually really happy with the room.

 

 

 

The beds were great, although not quite as soft as the Conquest beds that I remember, but still really comfortable. The air con worked really well for us and we like it cold. I liked the new TV's with the on demand films and the USBs beside the bed were really handy. The fridge worked really well and our drinks were really cold after the first night. (I forgot to mention that we'd picked up some cans of coke on the way back to the hotel earlier). The only thing missing for me was drawers for underwear etc. I have a workaround for that though, and use small net washbags for our smaller items so they can easily be moved around, similar to packing cubes. 

 

Bathroom pretty much the same as I remember from Conquest

 

 

 

I like that there are lots of places to organise things in the bathroom. The shower was good too. 

 

When we'd logged onto Carnival to complete the room set up etc it asked if you were celebrating anything. John and I had celebrated our 25th wedding anniversary earlier this year and despite always promising ourselves a fabulous holiday to celebrate, we didn't have the big trip we'd always planned because we knew we'd want to visit Mark at some point. We had a fabulous couple of days in Disneyland Pairs (one of our favourite places) and said that this trip would be part of our celebration too. So I'd ticked anniversary and was really happy to see that we had a bottle of champagne and a fruit bowl left for us in both rooms. I thought that was a really nice gesture.

 

 

Lewis and Abbey's room was identical to ours, except with single beds set up. I didn't take any pictures of their room.

 

We spoke with Ryan, our lovely room steward who introduced himself and explained about servicing the room. We chose the later service as we knew we'd probably be later sleepers. I know we could have chosen both but I didn't think we'd need it. We also asked for ice and some robes. He was so nice and chatty. 

 

All feeling hungry we headed off in search of food. Everyone wanted BBQ from the Pig and Anchor so we got the lift up to deck 10 and made our way. There were only a couple of people in the queue before us and we found seats just inside. The food was delicious with the best macaroni cheese I've had. I love this upstairs part of the Lido as it's much quieter than downstairs. But because they've made it the Italian restaurant now, the seats soon get set up for that so it reduces the number of available seats. 

 

Whilst we were up here, Mark found us and we had lots of hugs and tears as we said hello. Because of this I don't have any photos of us here - you'l just need to use your imagination, lol.

 

He had had a lovely morning in Central Park and we spoke about what we'd done whilst enjoying our food. After this we had a wander around the ship.

 

 

 

We went to the Red Frog Pub which is where Mark plays each night and had a look around the Piano Bar.

 

 

 

After this I think it may have been muster drill time and Mark had to go off to get ready to man his station. I don't recall where our area was exactly but it was much less hectic that our experience on Conquest.

 

Once this finished we met up again with Mark and went to our room to give him his birthday presents. It had been his birthday in May, but because the Sunrise had only just started out of Virginia we didn't want to risk trying to post anything. It can sometimes take ages for anything to go through. 

 

Next we popped into the Java cafe for some drinks. I had a white chocolate frappe and it was delicious. It became my go to drink for the cruise. 

 

 

The cakes in here are enormous!

 

 

It was soon time for sail away and Mark took us to the crew deck where we had the most amazing view. I think this is probably the best perk of being on the ship with a crew member. There were only a handful of people on the deck and we were right at the front, I think on deck 5, with a completely unobstructed view and in a very calm atmosphere. I absolutely loved it.

I think we may have gone back to the cabin for a bit after this. We had arranged Your Time dining so that we could fit in with Mark's schedule but we didn't want to bother with the dining room tonight as Mark had a earlier set I think. So we said we'd meet up in Lido later. 

 

I had paid for the social media wifi package so that we could keep in touch with Mark via Whatsapp but I couldn't actually get the hub to work. I wanted to see this to make sure the cruise cash had been added to our account. Abbey was able to get onto hers ok but I just could not get connected. I went to guest services and they apologised, explaining that there was an outage with the hub which was being worked on and they confirmed that our cruise cash was there ok. 

 

We met up with Mark in the Lido and grabbed a quick bite to eat. Mark went off to get ready for his set and we had stroll around the deck. 

 

 

 

It was a wee bit windy 

 

 

 

Then we made our way to the Red Frog Pub to see the Hip Stars and the Have Mercy Horns play.

 

I took loads of video footage tonight and not many photo graphs. It got very busy after the welcome aboard show and they did the air guitar bit, which Mark pays for. It's really a lot of fun. The entire band are fabulous and I loved watching them.

 

 

All exhausted now we said goodnight to Mark and crashed out for a good night's sleep.

Did the hip stars change some of their members since I saw them on our May 27 - June 10 cruise? The female isn’t the same one. She was a blonde when we saw them.

Well spotted! Yes, Julia had a 2 week break which was exactly when we were on board. Gina was there in her place and was really good too. Julia is back on board now.

Ah gotcha. We saw them 3-4 times so it was easy to see the lead singer was different. My kids, 22 and 21 yearly old, really liked them and went up on stage a couple times during breaks to chat with them. I bet my kids spoke with your son! 🙂

 

One other missing person was in that horn section on the left. I don’t remember her name but it was a black female. She was AMAZING.
