Equinox Review July 13 - 20, 2019

We've sailed Equinox many times as she's based in Florida year round.  We like her even more now that she sails out of Ft. Lauderdale versus Miami.  We drive to Florida and Ft. Lauderdale is as far south as I feel safe...  Anyway, I was interested to see what had changed in the "revolution" as we sailed her last voyage before she headed off to Cadiz.

We had done the check-in on the Celebrity app.  My recollection is that I took photos of our passports and us.  I received Express Passes on the app that stated "Expedited Boarding."  From reading reviews from people who had sailed on the first cruises in June post-revolution it sounded like you now went to your cabins upon embarkation to pick up your Sea Pass cards and drop off your hand luggage.  This was before the rooms are ready announcement would be made.  That was what I expected.

First we parked at Park 'N' Go and promptly were taken to Terminal 25 to board.  This was around 11 am.  We walked right through Security; there were no lines at this time.  My husband got wanded due to his belt buckle (a normal LL Bean one, not a Texas sized one...)  He says the metal sensitivity can vary from machine to machine to day to day.  Then we went up an escalator to another room.  There were three long lines of people queing up.  We happened to get in the far right line.  I just happened to see out of the corner of my eye, through gaps in the two lines to my left, a waist high sign that read "Expedited Boarding."  So we cut through the other two lines to a roped area where there was a terminal employee holding up a placard that also said "Expedited Boarding."  This "sign" was a 5" x 7" card!!  They need to have employees at the top of the escalator asking if you checked in on the app or if you have expedited boarding!  Perhaps they will in the future.  Keep in mind I am only talking about the Equinox, only at Terminal 25 and only on the day I boarded.

Another employee scanned my bar codes on my phone with her Ipad.  She took another picture of both of us.  Perhaps even though I had taken photos they want the most current way you look on the day you board....or our original photos were too ghastly...  She told us that our CALL (Classic Beverage Package) sign was on our electronic Sea Pass and that we could charge drinks using the phone.  She said our cards were outside our room and we could collect them when the rooms are ready announcement was made.  I know others have reported not being able to use the electronic Sea Pass card but apparently that has changed.

So we did not go drop off our hand luggage as I thought she was discouraging us from doing that.  I don't like to be the person that pushes open the closed corridor door because I'm special....  Later I thought about it and realized other people must have been told to go pick up their cards outside their cabins because if you had not received your Sea Pass via the app you would be unable to charge a drink without the physical card.  So next time we might go drop off the hand luggage even though we have the electronic card...

So it was now time to head to the Sunset Bar.  My husband did not have the app on his phone so he took mine with both our passes to the bar.  He said the first bartender was confused as to how to use it instead of a card to swipe.  So it is a learning curve.  It really wouldn't have mattered if my husband did have the app on his phone because in that case he would have had to take both phones to the bar.

After our drinks we heard the rooms are ready announcement shortly after 1 pm.  We went to our AQ cabin, 1561, and left our hand luggage and put stuff in the safe.  We went back to the Oceanview and it was a zoo.  Could not find a table and we walked the full circuit twice.  Remember we sail Equinox often, in all months, and we've never had this problem after the rooms are ready announcement is made and clears the place out.  Don't know why that day was different.  So we went to The Mast Grill instead.  Took our plates into the Solarium and ate at tables at the Spa Cafe which for whatever reason was not open for lunch on embarkation day.  I thought at first it was closed as it was now 2 pm but when I checked the embarkation daily it was not listed as open.  Only Oceanview, Mast Grill and Sushi on 5 were open for lunch that day.  (Of course, the MDR if you were in a Concierge Cabin or Luminae if in a suite.)

Other than those differences on embarkation day I'll just say our cabin had been redone.  We liked the smaller coffee table and between that and the geometric print of the carpet I'd swear the cabin was larger.  I know it was not because the vanity desk and the sofa are the same size but it sure does feel roomier!  Also the balcony felt much larger due to the tiny table replacing the full size one and no footstools.  We don't order room service so the smaller tables didn't affect us negatively.

About AQ I'll only say that the reason I chose it for this sailing was to have a break from the MDR.  And because I avoid the sun but love to spend hours on my balcony I'm the odd duck that loves the cabins with the deep overhang.  I could stay there all day long whether in port or sailing.  We don't get up early enough to have breakfast in Blu (closes at 8:30 or 9 am) so we only ate dinner there.  Food is subjective so I'm not going to touch on that.  I priced AQ for our next cruise and it's $500 more total than a regular balcony for a seven night cruise.  Well, actually, it's a Concierge Class balcony as that GTY was cheaper than a 2B cabin.  I don't do veranda GTY on S Class because I don't want to wind up with a 2D or 2C.  $500 more when we only utilize Blu for dinner and don't use Persian Gardens doesn't make sense to me.

Changes I noticed were new wicker/hemp chairs at Sunset and smaller cocktail tables.  No more full size tables there.  There are some semi-circular sofa style seats at Sunset along the sides.  There is less seating by the bar area.  This makes it look larger and airier....but of course it also means less seating.  There are no longer tables by the railing across from the bar.  That's a plus as it sometimes made it tight to walk through there.  The Oceanview looks exactly the same to me.  One thing I've never experienced on Equinox was the Oceanview had delicious fried calamari every day for lunch!!  (Well, I can't vouch for the first day.)  On day 2 when we saw it we started to joke about surely it wouldn't be there the next day but it was every single day.  And it was fried perfectly.  I am going through calamari withdrawal.

The Passport Bar does have different seating and less of it.  I did actually see people sitting at the benches around the large table that used to be in Team Earth.  The carpet is a lovely cream background with pale splotches of color.  The whole Passport Bar does look beautiful in its refurb.  I must say that although I could tell there was less seating at Sunset and Passport it did not look crowded other than when a show or something was going on in the Foyer.  And it was always crowded at such times before.  Martini Bar looks the same as does Cafe al Bacio.  Only ate once in the MDR and I guess I'd say the chairs had been reupholstered as I saw no signs of wear on any of them.

The casino removed some of the machines closest to the bar and put in four tables that seat four.  I suppose to watch the sports on the TVs?

Departure was incredibly fast.  We choose to do the first group after self-debark and Luggage Valet.  We were called at 7:50 am.  We walked off...no lines...until you got to Captain Kate shaking hands and saying goodbye and thanks to people on the gangway.  Joking....no lines although she was there.  We walked down the escalator in the terminal and right up to the facial recognition machines.  There were five or so machines and no lines at all.  Then we walked into the room where the luggage was neatly lined up.  Collected our bags and walked right off.  Unbelievably fast!!

Oh, also, I filled out the How Are We Doing card on Day 3 and a very nice staff member came to our cabin the next day to discuss what I'd commented on.  I was impressed!  (I wouldn't have wanted to have that job!)  I had praised our steward, Francisco.  I had said I missed the complete itinerary being listed on the front page of the embarkation daily with the port hours, time changes and Evening Chic nights listed.  He nicely showed me it's still there....albeit on the second page.  I don't know how I missed that but I blame the beverage package....  I also said I missed having the sunrise and sunset times on the program.  He explained they seemed to want you to get that information on the app or TV.  OK, guess I'll have to relinquish my paper attraction...(in my defense I grow pine trees...)  I also commented that on Day 2, the first Captain's Club Happy Hour in the Sky Lounge, a nicely dressed woman wearing a Celebrity name tag stopped to talk to the couple at a table in front of us....and then us.  I assumed she was one of the hosts.  Turns out she was a Spa employee and trolling for business.  I mentioned I thought that was inappropriate.  His response to that was the issue was "being addressed."

If anyone has any questions please ask.  Sorry to be so long winded!

No, to the specialty restaurants.  Considered Blu a specialty to us...  Solarium pool no busier than I've normally seen.  Meaning always chairs available....also clamshell hoggers...

I remembered something else.  Getting a final invoice statement has been hit or miss for us on our Equinox cruises.  This time not only did we get a printed invoice the morning of the last day but we also got an email invoice of our final bill.  That was nice.

That’s a good little drive from your neck of the woods...BTW, I’ve stayed near the Port of Miami a few times recently with no issues...

good review, sailing on the EQ 9-23...I’ll be sure to check ou what you mentioned with the APP and check in.

My experience was filling out the checkin in the app gave us the expedited boarding and we were on extremely fast!  I’d absolutely do it rather than paper.

We like to drive.  Stay in Daytona driving down and Savanna on the way home.  If you snorkel and bring your own gear it’s easier to drive than fly.

You’re not exactly close to a major airport either...so I get it.  I’m only 20 miles south of ATL airport.

I did drive home recently from Miami..I think I hit every Love Bug south of Orlando. Thankfully, I was in a rental.

Agree on being easier when you have “stuff”

I was used (shudder) to seeing them in the air and on the car...we stopped to get something to eat and as I reached for the restaurant’s door I realized it was crawling with black bodies.  ICK!!!  I’d hate to have a business in their flight path.

Oh I presume you don’t get off the ship in Key West and God forbid in any of the Mexican ports as that would REALLY be scary!  Way down South......

As far as I feel safe driving in south Florida.  Why should it bother you if I prefer to leave the car in Ft. Lauderdale and take an Uber if I’m cruising out of Miami?

I knew what you meant Helen, I used to live in South Florida and if I had to travel past FtLauderdale I was very uncomfortable because there are numerous lanes on 95 to contend with and it was really difficult to maneuver all those lanes safely.

We were on the July 13th cruise also.  We arrived around 10:30am.  Also did all the online registration and had the express pass on our phones.  Breezed right through.  Boarding began at 11:00. They made an announcement before boarding began that you COULD go to your cabins and get your sea pass, drop off bags and then leave to explore the ship.  We did that and we're at the buffet before 11:30. Busy, but still plenty of seats at that time. This was our first Celebrity Cruise, so we had no status and were one of the last to board as we had a Deluxe Veranda cabin, but not Concierge or Aqua.

They must have made that announcement either before or after we were in the terminal....  Good to know for future reference.  As the procedure has changed substantially since we last cruised Equinox I wanted to make sure we were doing the right thing...

Hope you had a great cruise!

Thank you for the wonderful review !!  We will be in cabin 1599 on our December cruise.  I am bothered about the lack of footstools or loungers.  We are on the slant and I am hoping for loungers or will ask for them.  My hubby has had double knee replacement surgeries and was looking forward to relaxing on the balcony.  Sounds like the Aqua Class is a bit different from the advertisements when we booked.  If they are going to delete perks, the website should reflect such.  But.... all that whining aside, we are looking forward to trying Celebrity after about 12 RCL cruises.  We will be happy just being together 🙂
