Which side of ship for best views, Venice to Barcelona?...

Hello,

We will be sailing from Venice to Barcelona on the Nieuw Amsterdam for our anniversary.  Which side of the ship should we choose our cabin for the best views?

Port side, so you'll see San Marco etc.from your room...

For the Venice sail away, the left (port) side will have nicer views -- if your ship will be allowed to port in the Venice Terminal and be allowed to sail between San Marco & Giudecca.

For Barcelona I don't think it matters, as the view from either side is nothing special.

Realistically, it makes no difference as you will be open seas most of the time and not close enough to shore to see anything.. Also, you will be getting into ports very early in the morning so, again, it makes no difference.

Departing will be different but, you can be on deck and see whatever interests you.

 

Now, Venice, .....going into Venice, you will see the city (it is on the starboard (right) ) side, departing the city will be on the port (left) side, if you are going at a time where they allow the ship into Venice. If not, it makes no difference.

Agree with this. 99.9% of the time, the side of the ship absolutely doesn't matter.

 

Venice is special. But what you see will depend on where you are when you sail. If you sail at 6, you might be at dinner. If you sail at some other time, you might be on deck, at the sail away party....or asleep if its a late sail away. We are rarely in our cabin during daytime sail aways....usually on deck somewhere (and we are always in suites). So, in the big picture,  cabin side is not critical.

...while true, I'd never recommend staying in your room or on your balcony for the Venice sail-out/sail-in, you need to be up on an open deck (preferably at the bow) to get the full experience. It's worth it.*

 

As for preferred side for room, I honestly don't feel like it makes a bit of difference (after 10 Med cruises); most of the time you are out of sight of land very quickly while underway and at port there is no way to know which way the ship will dock.

 

*That's assuming they haven't changed the current approach, which is under discussion.

From the port (left) side on departure if in Venice Maritimma port. Coming into Venice Piazza San Marco will be on the right (starboard) side.

Having cruised from Venice on numerous occasions we think the best place to be is on deck (preferably near the bow) where one has a full view of both port and starboard as well as forward.  While sitting on your own balcony might be romantic it takes away about 2/3 of the overall view you can get from a high spot on deck.  If the weather is not conducive to being outside we have always loved being in the Crows Nest (now sadly destroyed on most HAL vessels).

From Venice we always are on the port side!!! What we love even with our balcony is going up beyond Crows Nest to next level with champagne and watching us sail out of the canal! Breath taking even for us with 6 times doing it!

Our most memorable was on the Windstar leaving and hearing the crisp white sails going up and them playing 1942!! We listen to that song all the time!

From Venice we've also found Port Side to be the best.

Having said that ---- we generally LOVE to be outside at front of ship or on the Aft as we sail out of Venice.

I have never sailed HAL from Venice --- just Celebrity.

 

Celebrity plays Italian Opera as we sail out of Venice.  You can only hear the music when you're outside.  The outside view is magnificent... especially at the front of the ship.

You have a panoramic view of this magnificent city.  You get to see the color of the skyline changing.  There are normally sea birds flying around the ship as you depart.   It is a magical experience.

 

If your ship is returning to Venice -- then the return in the morning is just as magical & you need to be outside so you don't miss the sights, sounds & smells (nice smells like morning ocean dew) as you sail into Venice.

Definitely port side for Venice. Barcelona is a very large port and doesn’t merit choosing a particular side to view IMO.
