Cococay...new theme song, money, money, money

Recommended Posts

So I cruise a lot on RCCL, just checking to see whats new on my cruise planner for my December Symphony cruise.

I tend to go all out, since it is a vacation.

I booked the Key, Specialty dining, adult beverage pkg, etc.

Back to the reason for this post.  Why is Cococay cabanas so expensive.

This is $500 more than my OV balcony cabin cost.

I would take that money and donate with a chance of winning to the Casino.

I realize they have to pay for this 200 million dollar upgrade somehow, just not getting it from me.

We had an Oasis Lagoon cabana last week. Eight people, ranging from 1 to 60 yrs old. It was totally worth it.......... but we paid $439. We booked it before  the CoCo Cay changes were finished. For our cruise next year, it’s $899. Same eight folks, unlikely we will do it again at that price.

Yep, there are people who will do it at almost any price. Just like the staterooms example, there are people who pay $10-20-30k for the star class staterooms. I could never justify that to my wife when we can get a room for $2-3k or less. To each their own 🤷‍♂️

I paid $359 for our Chill Island Cabana back in May. They went and added a second CocoCay stop (we're on Mariner) and they want $700 for the same thing, two days later. I'm not going to pay double for the same thing I had for half two days before, but I'm sure there's someone out there that will jump on it.

Well....they aren't making any money on your room....they need to make it somewhere else right 😉

Because of website errors for the last several years, where it was not clear when you rent a cabana and put in the cart....people selected everyone in their party and ended renting 4-6 cabanas...and then figured it out and had to cancel later....they know people are willing to spend.

It is called supply and demand and the private enterprise system.  They will charge what they think the market will bear.

We are on a ship that called on Coco Caye about three weeks after its "grand reopening"  I.E. the new pool and water park.  We booked the cruise about 4 months before hand.  The initial prices for the water park was $99/person, over the next few months the price bounced around, to the cheaper, however it did go up some, but never reached the $99/person.

The Cabana's are no different, create the market, if the market doesn't respond, reduce the price until it does.  Easier to lower prices than raise prices.

Just here to say you don’t need one.   Twangster can confirm having recently been there, but there are so many loungers and umbrellas all over, as well as free-to-use lockers, that their use is unnecessary.   Around Oasis Lagoon, there are several servers to bring you drinks.   If your main purpose in booking one is for the snack shack menu service, yes it’s true you’d have to go get your own funnel cakes and crispy chicken sandwiches because you won’t have an attendant while on your chair with umbrella.   But seriously, unless you’re really looking for privacy, there are plenty of chairs and available shade at no extra cost.

This is what I was wondering about.

We aren't sailing there yet, so I haven't looked into it in detail, but what could possibly be in the cabana to justify paying the same price as a second cruise?

I'm sure whatever it is, I'm cool without it.  In Labadee we're always in the water and while enjoying the cabana there for a fraction of that cost, I still felt like, "hmmm we didn't really use this"

We didn't even use the lounge chairs. We were basically chair hogs as they were just there to hold our belongings. We didn't even bother with an umbrella. We just floated back and forth to the swim up bar on our dollar store blow up rafts an sipped our tropical drinks from the deluxe drink package. It was a perfect day at Labadee not Coco Cay.

..... paying the same price as a second cruise?

Maybe it's a frame of reference thing.

'All in' taking room, beverage, excursions, etc (basically everything we spend sans gambling) into account....our family of 4 has never been below 5 digits (we 'almost' got it into 4 digits in Dec 18....but final tally put us over) .  Honestly, while I agree $1299 is high...it isn't higher than I would pay for the comfort....even though between being on CocoCay twice and Labadee once...if I added ALL the time I spent in the cabanas on all three trips it probably wouldn't equal 2 hours....it does give us a nice 'base' to work from for 8 hours, wife and 2 kids in and out all day, I was in the water for 5-6 hours, lunch was always good....plus...I hate sand.  Can't stand it.  So not having to sit on it with it all over my toes when I am not in the water has value to me...walk up to the cabana when I want to dry out....pour some water all over my toes and flop on the sofa ;).

All summer long on the weekends when we go to the Jersey shore...I Sherpa my wife and kids up to the beach, set everything up, go in the ocean for 30 minutes...and then go back to the house.  Then I come back 4-5 hours later when everyone is tired (wearing boots and socks so I don't get sandy) and take em back to the house....that's how much I hate sand.

I continue to be amazed that people are paying that much, ESPECIALLY because loungers and umbrellas are available for free everywhere.

But as long as people are willing to pay it, what do I care?  It subsidizes my free umbrella and lounger!

What is the difference between a South beach Cabana and Chill Island Cabana.

My Allure cruise next year shows a $500.00 dollar difference between each.  Not that it is worth it for us when it is just the two of us but I am curious.

Other than location there is none that I am aware of.  At the current time the South Beach ones are not in what will be their final location, but they might be by the time you sail.
