As a concessionaire working in the shops, we are hired and contracted with our company. Technically, I had nothing to do with Royal.

Good to know. I’ve done some consulting work for starboard in the past, but only worked with their shoreside operations, but never with their onboard operations.

I had a very simply question, wondering what the job of an "Asstistant Casino Host" would be besides smiling at the guests. But Google told me it's a tough job.  https://www.cruiseshipjob.com/mvc/j2191/Norwegian-Cruise-Line-jobs-Casino-Host

If I ever meet you on a ship,  please don't work too hard "to secure repeat daily visitations"  but focus on the "comp drink cards" instead :classic_biggrin: Have fun!

The job so far has been very challenging! Very long hours, and very late finishes. Like 4am for example.

Theres a lot to learn with the Club Royale loyalty program. Calculating points, working out rewards.

A lot of computer work is involved, as well as the guest interaction.

Royal still does give crown and anchor members a badge. I'm not sure what status you need to be though.

Not a crew badge, but a gold colored metal nameplate.

Before 2011, they were actual crew badges.

I would love to hear about your experience calculating points, especially for table game players.  Is it just buy in / cash out and average bet times number of hours?  My points from cruise to cruise are all over the place.  I play table games almost exclusively, but will drop a little money in a slot machine once in a while.  Slot points are always accurate (since they're automatic).

My points earning at land-based casinos is pretty straightforward.  If I check my P&L statement, it looks pretty accurate.  My points earning on RCI ship table games almost seems random and doesn't reflect my real table play at all.

Your cabin does look small, but livable.  Your wardrobe though has me wondering how many "work outfits" you have and how often you need to launder them.  I would think you'd need at least a couple of suits and maybe a smart casual outfit or two for work.  Do employees need to pay for laundry?  Is it DIY or do you use the same ship's laundry service as passengers?

We have a crew laundry facility that is free for us to use. Basically just a big room with washers, dryers, and ironing area.

I have 3 different outfits for work. Living/working on a ship, we do have to be limited with how much clothes we bring.

What kind?

M

I would think any kind as they can trade.  We do tend to give cash but I know people who put together goody bags with candy and gift cards they can use in port like Starbucks or grocery stores.  For example, right across the street from the Baltimore port is a Harris Teeter Grocery store where a lot of crew pickup necessities and snacks and they sell their own gift cards.

Loving this thread and really appreciate your videos. I'm joining a RCCL ship in 4 days as a "Flying Physician" - filling in for a doctor who is on break. I've just started putting together my own Vlog, and absolutely appreciate how hard you worked to make a personable, helpful series of videos. Can't wait to see what else you have planned for your channel!

Neato!  As a doc, I'd love the hear your take on what you've got available to you on a ship.  I've always been curious about that.  From posts here, sounds like some basic radiology, etc.  How austere is it compared to working shore-side?  What are the quals of the folks you work with?  RN?  LNP?  I visited the sick bay on the Allure.  Super nice people working there.  They also did a faboo job with a practice alpha on the pool deck.  "Patient" was a great actor and forced everyone from the lifeguard on up to work for it.  🙂

I hope too many people don't take advantage on here by asking for special favors or freebies, though! I think it's awesome that a crew member has joined us and is happy to answer questions. 🙂 But I'd hate to see it turn into lots of people approaching him on the ship, saying they're from Cruise Critic, and asking for free drink comps or special favors, which kind of puts him in an uncomfortable position of either having to say no, or risk his job by giving out too many freebies. Maybe we should try to remember to just smile and say hi and then keep it moving.

Thanks for the concern. I have very strict rules to follow when giving rewards to guests, so I will never cross the line to rewarding friends and family.

Good luck in your new position.

I was on the Mariner last week and the casino was very unfriendly. Though I was on a comped casino cruise and am at the Signature level, I was not approached by the host or assistant host. I had to flag down a server to get a drink.  I was on the same ship with the same casino host in June, and it was totally different.

I agree with a previous poster who said smile and talk to people, especially those who are spending a lot of money or time in the casino.

Hope to meet you on my November cruise.

I'm sorry to hear your previous experience was unfriendly. I will try my best to make a better experience for you.

Mariner is actually one of the busiest ships for the casino, so personally greeting guests can be difficult for us.

I will see you in November.

Thanks for sharing your videos.  It was nice to finally see a crewmembers cabin.  It is so tiny.  Good thing you got the bottom bunk!  Did you flip a coin for that?  🙂

Whoever moves into the cabin first, will get the bottom bunk. Or if you are on the top bunk, and your cabin mate moves out, you will take the chance to move to the bottom bunk - before your new cabin mate arrives.

If not asked already, how do you not go crazy living with another person in such tight quarters for 6 months?!

Royal Caribbean Dude,

Last month on Grandeur, I noticed that the woman who played piano in the Centrum, was also one of the sales personnel in  the shops. Is it common for entertainers/musicians to have a second job?  Is it required or do you folks do that for extra income?

Thanks and look forward to seeing you on mariner in a December

m

The opportunity for crew members to take on second or side job is available, but this is not required. Sometimes crew members may want to earn some more money during their free time.

The piano player may have been helping out with a sales event or raffle of some sort.

As well, sometimes the entertainers will perform in the shops to help promote their CDs.

First of all...your cruisecritic name is awesome!

I am planning a whole series of videos - from getting hired, the training, the packing (very different than entertainers and very few guidelines), and the whole cruise ship medicine experience. Got interested in it from a mentor from 2 decades ago who thought it would be an interesting side-job for me.

Since I'm currently waiting to board a ship that is being delayed by the storm, I will have to get back to you on the particulars. I am hopeful though that RCL will help participate in medical care / evacuations in the Bahamas as they have in the past.

How's the mood about Dorian.

Closely watching since we are scheduled to sail Monday

This cruise has been interesting because of the hurricane. The ship is only at half capacity, due to many guests cancelling their cruise.

we had to change itinerary and we are now currently in Mexico. Cozumel yesterday, and Costa Maya today.

We still have no idea what is happening next Cruise, as we are not even sure if guests will be able to join the ship.

Please be safe...thinking of you and all of your fellow crew who I am sure are taking the brunt of emotions from very frustrated cruisers!
