For a time they did offer D’s a discount off the drinks package if you purchase it on board but it’s now only offered to D+ and P. Since it’s off the on-board price the D discount was a wash or ended up costing you more than if you found a good sale price

katiel53 Posted August 22, 2019 #5 Share Posted August 22, 2019 Just pretend you aren't Diamond and you won't feel short changed. Or, you can be like some of the people in the DL who spend the entire cocktail hours drinking as many drinks as they can handle so they don't need the alcohol package. Some of those leave shortly before the end of the cocktail time, go to dinner and immediately order 3 drinks before the 8PM cut off. For me, even though I am D+, I buy the package and more times than not, I/we don't go to the lounge as we don't do snacks before dinner. 5
Rare island lady Posted August 22, 2019 #6 Share Posted August 22, 2019 We pretty much stick to wine and occasional beer on a cruise. Happy hour in the lounge may see us with a Gin and T in our hands, but not really the norm. Drink vouchers, may use them sometimes at dinner, but rare. Two bottles of wine allowed in carry on. Sometimes we only take one on board, sometimes none. Three bottles of wine delivered to cabin as complimentary. Do we need drink package?...not in our case/situation...IMHO. 😉

If you look at the cost of the beverage package per person (and all in the cabin have to buy it if opted for)...you really need to be a heavy drinker to make it pay for itself....IMHO.

I just hope you're not one of those sitting in the DL during the entire C&A HH drinking as many drinks as you can handle so you don't need to purchase the BP. You can also use your C&A drinks that are loaded on your Sea Pass card in the dining venues during the C&A HH. cruisegirl1 Posted August 22, 2019 #14 Share Posted August 22, 2019 You are not required to use the lounge or the vouchers. We sailed with many who use the lounge, but also have the drink package and upgraded the liquor for their drinks. Depending on what your drink, you may not find the FREE drinks acceptable. Since you don't pay (directly) for the FREE drinks, just use your package. M

Even though that is also a nice perk. Edited August 22, 2019 by davekathy
parrotfeathers Posted August 22, 2019 #16 Share Posted August 22, 2019 I'm diamond and also in a GS this November. My cruise bud wants to be able to have a few drinks during the day. So I had to buy the DP also. I just see it as an opportunity to have a better quality champagne than what is offered in the lounge. I usually get cosmos in there but prob will bring my better champagne into the lounge.

I'm sorry, but I totally disagree with you. On days we have breakfast, we have fresh squeezed OJ. I also have a mocha coffee from the Promenade Cafe. At dinner I enjoy having one or two glasses of wine and I am not a fan of the wine served in the DL. I also have a drink or sometimes 2 in the casino after dinner and most times it is Johnny Walker Double Black scotch and soda which is not available in the DL. A few times during the week, I may have a Pina Colada or Mango drink. All day and at night I drink bottled water. Now, to you, I might be a heavy drinker, but compared to many with the alcohol package, I am not. I certainly don't drink like the above at home, but a vacation is different just as I don't eat as much at home as I do on a cruise.

The HH drinks are limited so if you purchase the DP there is no need to feel short changed if your tipple is different. We prefer Sauvignon Blanc but it is not on the HH list.
cb at sea Posted August 22, 2019 #19 Share Posted August 22, 2019 If you plan on drinking while "out and about" on the ship, you will want either the package, or to buy drinks a la carte. Except for the 3 included drinks you can get out on the ship during cocktail hours, you will have to do your drinking in the lounge, which can be difficult if you enjoy being at the pool or strolling about... You can buy a drink anywhere without the package, if you feel the drinks during cocktail hours are good enough to reduce your spending onboard.

We enjoy the lounge before dinner for a couple of drinks, but the real reason we like the lounge so much is to socialize with "birds of a feather" while sipping on our cocktails. We all have the same passion...we love to cruise. Have met many interesting people, some of whom we still stay in contact with, and enjoy cruising with again. Then it's off to dinner, with a glass of wine, and usually don't return to the lounge afterwards. I do love it for coffee early in the am, one of my favorite perks. ☕ 🙂
