Taxis right at ship in dublin

Recommended Posts

I read on cc that we needed to take bus outside of the port to get a taxi but that's seems to no longer true.

We were in Dublin in August on Celebrity Reflection (Alexandra  quay ). There was no possibility to walk. There was another ship from Princess just on the other side and those passengers were allowed to walk.

Celebrity provided shuttle buses to the center of the city (Merrion Square) for €13 or $15 (2 ways)  It takes 30 minutes one way.

Taxis are very limited (near ship) There was a long line for the taxis. There were 50 people waiting and only 3 -5 taxis available.

Fare to the center  €15-€20 depending on traffic and location

In addition to the above: This August the port provided a free shuttle to a gate halfway to the exit; about 1,5 kms walking distance to "The Point" where the Red Line of LUAS tram has its beginning/end. Daycard about GBP 7.  End of the day we drove in a taxi from "The Point" to gangway of ship: GBP 7.

For our Celebrity ship there was no free shuttle bus. Only the bus o the center

The people in the yellow circle are at the sign for the free port shuttle bus that MAVIP is referring to.

We were on m.s. Rotterdam of Holland America Line.  Shuttle to Merrion Square US$ 20 and passengers could use it as many time as they wished. The free shuttle (very very short trip) was offered by the port authority or alike.

Uber also works quite well in Dublin for both taxis (they run on the meter but are billed through the app) and for black cars which are a little bit more expensive but tend to be Mercedes (both E and S Class). You can have them come to the port to pick you up.

At this point, I'm beginning to think that the only advice Cruise Critics can give about the port of Dublin is: you'll find out what your cruise line and the port are doing about taxis and shuttles when you get there!

Correct!  Usually there is an 'Arrangement' between the Port Authority and the Cruise Line as to whether taxis are permitted to the ship or not.  Recently there was 'upset' when a cruise line docking in Ringaskiddy, Cork, would not permit taxis or non cruise line tour buses to approach the dock.  The Port Authority supported this poorly thought out decision, and blocked non cruise line vehicles from entering the quayside.  Cruisers who had booked taxis or private excursions had to walk to the port entrance.
