Tipping currency in China

Chinese law still specifically forbids foreign currency in China - although most of the time it is overlooked.

Chinese nationals can now legally exchange foreign currency at banks, but it is a bit of a hassle.

How would an American waiter or taxi driver feel about getting a tip in Chinese Renminbi?

In the bigger Chinese cities, there are many ATMs for withdrawing currency. Foreign credit cards may or may not work in them.

Tipping is not customary in China.

If you do, Yuan is preferred.  As my MIL can attest it is a pain the rear for them to deposit foriegn currency into their bank accounts.  Vendors who do is because they deal with foreigners all the time and have a permit.

Foriegn credit card acceptance is limited to businesses that caters to foreigners.  SWMBO wanted to pay the check for a BFF reunion at a fancy dim sum restaurant with her Visa, but it was not accepted.  Only the local UnionPay card or phone apps (WePay, AliPay) were accepted.  Her BBFF paid the check with WePay.  Cash?  Nobody had any, they all used the phone apps.

If your debit card bank belongs to one of the major ATM networks and the logo is on the ATM machine, it should work...YMMV.

On our land tour to China we ordered some Chinese currency before we left then topped up at atms which are readily available in cities and were reliable.

Have done 2 land tours in China. One 10 day and one 14 day. Got $300 in Yuan from local bank as you did which we used for incidentals and it worked out well. Most of our meals were included but when we did eat in restaurant there was no problem using Visa. I believe if you go on Wells Fargo site you can order just about any currency. Will be going to Thailand in Feb. and will do the same.
