Do you know anyone that does not know that bu October 2020 you will need a REAL ID to fly or a passport?

For domestic US air travel, there are other options as well including US passport card, TWIC, MMD, et al.

In any case, no one I know doesn't know that a regular CA license will no longer qualify.

I got mine. Don't remember if my Better Half got his or not. We'll be flying in October of 2020, so that will be that acid test.

In the states that have not had Real ID yet, i.e. Pennsylvania where we live, there certainly has been lots of publicity.  Even though DW and I have Global Entry and I have a TWIC, we have done the paperwork part of the application for Real ID just so we have it.  I have not tried to use my Global Entry to enter the Federal Building in Pittsburgh, as I rarely go there, but that really should be good enough, and it is certainly sufficient to go through airport security.  For those who have none of those other IDs, I think the word has been put out that they need the Real ID going forward.  That being said, those of us who have served in the military know that 10% always fail to get the word.......

I believe that is only if you do not have a passport. You will be able to use a passport within the US or for travel outside without a real id.

Your TWIC is good for federal buildings.

Thank you chengkp75.  I think the Global Entry should be as well.  Haven't been to the Federal Building in so many years, I don't expect to ever test the waters.

When TWIC's first came out (and they are still not being used properly at ports, since there are no readers for the biometric data on the card), since I had to pay to have the darned thing, I was bound and determined to use it at the airport.  For a couple of years, I had to get a supervisor to approve it, even though I explained that it was issued by Homeland Security, the parent department of TSA.  I've used the TWIC to access USCG offices.  Not sure about the Global Entry.

That raises an interesting question for me.  I am meeting a friend who is coming into Portland, ME on a cruise ship tomorrow.  Will the TWIC card allow me down onto the dock to meet him at the gangway, or will the inability to be able to read the data on the card restrict the port to people who work there??

No, even without the biometric reading, the TWIC is used for port identification (at some ports).  However, to get clearance onto the dock to meet a ship, you would have to be on an access list from the cruise line.  All the TWIC does is allow you to move around port security areas without an escort.  Your access must be established by either the ship or the port (name on an access list).  Even a taxi driver is only allowed to pick up crew if the terminal calls ahead to establish that the ship has called for one.  And, each terminal can set their own procedures for allowing clearance.

Right.  But I'd rather not have to carry my passport any more than necessary.  My DL fits nicely in my wallet, passport doesn't.

I see this with the potential of being one of those threads like 'take your passport off the ship with you or leave it on the ship'

 

At the end of the day, everyone will do what they feel the most comfortable with. Currently the ReadID is really only for International travel. A state issued ID or DL will still work on domestic flights. 

 

I traveled for a few years for work. I always had my drivers license for car rentals. My passport was always inside a deep pocket within a pocket in my backpack. If I ever lost my wallet, I was still getting home. I still live by that philosophy.

Not after 10/20.

The passport card is the same size as a DL and fits in the wallet nicely when flying domestic.

I'm going to have to try using my TWIC next time I fly. I've had the damn thing since they started requiring them and only had to show it maybe a dozen times over the years to gain entry into a tank farm or refinery in the Houston area mostly. Nice to know I can actually get  some use out of it for a change instead of just sitting in the glove box of my truck.

My DL was up for renewal so not a biggy to me. @TruckerDave good point.  

 

As far as carrying my passport, as I mentioned, since it won't fit in my wallet I then I have to have a special place for it.  I'll use my DL.

TSA is now far more adjusted to them, and I don't get any questions anymore, but then again, I haven't flown from any airports in the heartland, far from ports.

The REAL ID isn't valid for international flights. A passport is required. REAL ID isn't valid for any other type of international travel either. I suspect you're making the same mistake that a lot of people make and confusing  a REAL ID drivers license with the enhanced drivers license (EDL), which is a WHTI-compliant document valid for land and sea border crossings (but not for international air travel either).

I don't know the answer to this.  When one's driver's license is renewed is it required that one get a Real ID?

I just (last month) renewed my DL via mail (for having a clean driving record) and was not required. It is already being offered to apply for here.

No, Real ID has nothing to do with kntl travel, currently or otherwise
