singnrn Posted October 8, 2019 #1 Share Posted October 8, 2019 I am trying to research what car rental companies are actually available from near the pier on Tortola . It seems that all the posts I am finding are very old. Does anyone have some recent information on car rental companies who have offices near the pier and the cars are there as well? Thank you for your help.
blue_water Posted October 9, 2019 #2 Share Posted October 9, 2019 Check into National, their office is located in the Maria’s by the Sea building near the cruise dock https://www.nationalcar.com/en/car-rental/locations/vg/road-town-marias-by-the-sea-hotel-kv04.html
colesc15 Posted December 4, 2019 #3 Share Posted December 4, 2019 Is it fairly easy to get around the island renting a car? We've done it on other islands before. Coming to Tortola for the first time in many years and we're there 8-5 so looking at doing a bunch of beaches. Smugglers beach looks gorgeous! blue_water Posted December 4, 2019 #4 Share Posted December 4, 2019 The main roads you would use are in good condition, just be aware many roads are quite steep and also winding. If there has been a recent heavy rainstorm some hilly areas can get washed out and a 4x4 can be handy. Other than that Tortola is a gorgeous island and worth exploring. blue_water Posted December 4, 2019 #5 Share Posted December 4, 2019 More info in this thread, post #2 has a link that may be helpful, post #5 has an itinerary I shared some time ago but is still useful - https://boards.cruisecritic.com/topic/2670735-worth-renting-a-car-for-the-day/
marysb Posted December 4, 2019 #6 Share Posted December 4, 2019 Be careful what you ask for! Driving in Tortola is not for the faint of heart. Roads are narrow, twisting, potholed, and very steep. Lots of oncoming traffic to dodge. It is an adventure in a taxi. But it is fun- and the views are stunning! Also, you drive on the left 😉
blue_water Posted December 4, 2019 #7 Share Posted December 4, 2019 Lol...Yes it can be an exhilarating ride in a safari taxi. But generally the roads are fine. There are just some steeper areas, and there are switchbacks to minimize that slope getting over the mountain And you do need to watch for oncoming “traffic” in these turns. We’ve never had a problem driving the island. The itinerary I provided avoids the steepest roads and adds gorgeous coastal views...
