Rent a Car...Your Experience?

We will be in port from 1:00pm - 11:00pm on November 19, and not sure where we will be docked.  Thinking of renting a car to see the El Yunque rainforest at our own pace, in our own time.  Does anyone here have experience with this?

We we are not seeing any tours that thrill us, but we are not sure driving will be the best solution.  That might be an adventure itself! 😃

We rented a car in Curacao and had an exceptional experience with the private company we used, dropped car off at dock, easy transaction.

Thanks for your help.

Should be pretty easy- we've rented cars many times in Puerto Rico, and have even picked up a car from the Hertz place in the Sheraton Old San Juan- which is right across the street from where you will dock.  Pick up and drop off right there.  Feel free to search around, but Hertz isn't that expensive in Puerto Rico, and the convenience of if being so close to the port is really nice.

The drive to El Yunque is pretty easy- some traffic as you leave San Juan, but not too bad.  Like every populated area, there are a lot of aggressive drivers....

It's about a 45 min drive to the rain forest, even though it looks closer than that.

Puerto Rico is the US.  Just the signs are in Spanish.

But in fairness to the poster, the US Virgin Islands are also part of the US and the signs are in English, but you drive on the left side of the road , so the question was a reasonable one.

Thank you so much @njhorseman, that is exactly what I needed to know.

  • 3 weeks later...

We rented one a few years back and drove south to Guayama.  On the way there we took the mountains and dogs chased us many times.  On the way back we took the highway and that was probably worse!  Pretty crazy driving on that highway.   We had the car all day and I was glad to return it!
