Any concerns over recent stories of violent crime in San Juan?

No.

San Juan is a big metro area, and there are areas where there are shootings pretty regularly- just like every large city in the US.  Old San Juan is not that.  Old San Juan is also the place where the capitol building and governor residence are located- so security is pretty darned good.  And there have not been any protests for months.

I've heard the caserios, like LL Torres, are the most dangerous areas in San Juan. Fortunately,  none are close to tourist areas. There are a couple of small neighborhoods up near El Morro that have drug related crime, but if you stick with main business  streets, public buildings, and plazas with activities,  you'll probably  not encounter these neighborhoods.

On our last trip to San Juan, we went into La Perla...  Even had a nice dinner there.   Seems like it has calmed down a lot.  The one thing I will say- DO NOT DRIVE THERE.  Roads are super narrow, and it took a lot of co-ordination to get out with out hitting other cars.  Thankfully, the residents are VERY helpful with that.

If you're coming to OLD San Juan for a cruise, the only place you should be really mindful of is La Perla. It's a small, poor neighborhood in the north part of the old city, just outside the city walls. It's a place notorious for drug crime but for some years now, and especially after the success of the video for the song "Despacito" (the one NOT featuring Justin Beiber, please!), there has been more tourist interest in the area and the residents are aware of this and would just leave you be. There have not been any reports of crime towards tourists in that area for years now.

Just like any big metro area, San Juan has crime problems. But the shootings you hear and read about are almost 100% drug related and usually happen away from tourist areas. Seldom you read about an innocent victim being involved in these shootings. So yes, you should be OK while visiting San Juan. Just be mindful of your surroundings just like anywhere else.

Just posted about our Uber ride from the airport to Embassy Suites. Taxis are also available. It is a short/quick ride.
