Never sailed out of New York before.  Booked Norwegian Encore to Bermuda in August.  Sorry if I'm missing it, but what pier in New York does she sail from ?  Haven't seen it anywhere.  Regards, Gerry.

Manhattan Cruise Terminal on 12th Ave.

Encore being a large ship will always sail from Pier 88, which is at 12th Ave and 48th St.

Please note that regardless of which pier,  88, 90 or 92/94, is being used there is only a single motor vehicle entrance, at 12th Ave. and 55th St., to the cruise terminal complex. There are separate pedestrian entrances to each of the piers however, at 48th St., 50th St. and 52nd St., respectively.

Thanks so much for the information.  Aside note: Being a history buff, isn't that the pier that the Normandie capsized at during the war in 1942 ?  Regards, Gerry.

It is-- if only they still made ships that look like Normandie. You'll also get a very good view of USS Intrepid and British Airways Concorde Alpha Delta. There is still vintage Cunard signage on 92 you can see from the ship looking back towards the city. You'll also be able to see the remnants of Pier 54 (just a steel gantry these days) as you sail out.

Thank you.  Yes, I feel Normandie is one of the most beautiful ships ever built. Would have loved to have seen her.  Worried about the congestion.  Don't feel I'm in Ft. Lauderdale anymore.  😉 Gerry.

You'll be fine-- when we sail out of Manhattan we usually go over around 12:30-- a little after the people who show up first thing but a little bit before the crush. We sailed to Bermuda on Oceania Insignia this past August with NCLs big ship next to us. Even with two ships there congestion wasn't bad getting to the pier-- most of the NCL passengers were arriving by busses so it cut down on a lot of cars being there and the Midtown Manhattan is generally pretty quiet on a weekend.

Even if the majority of people arrive on buses there are still so many people who arrive by car. The only time I ever saw midtown Manhattan quiet is when a movie was being filmed.

You can also usually find the pier location on your cruise documents and the cruise line should have a link on their website for all of the port locations from which they sail.

Couple other things.  So if we are sailing from pier 88 do we get dropped off 7 blocks away at 55th St or is that, 55th St. where the terminal is and check in ?  Or do we get dropped off at the pedestrian entrances for our respective piers ?   Also on debarkation was planning on having a service like Carmel pick us up for LaGuardia but read in another thread where NYPD were ticketing waiting car services across the street.  Sounds like a cluster for a Midwesterner.  Regards, Gerry.

You pull up a ramp and get dropped off at the appropriate pier where there will be baggage handlers to take luggage. It's almost like a miniature airport set up in that there is one vehicular access and you just have the driver go down to the appropriate pier. Any taxi or Uber driver will know where to go-- just tell them the specific pier as you get close.

We usually just use Uber or Lyft getting picked up there as the wait for a taxi can be hefty and this is an easy way to bypass the wait. You could hire a car service-- honestly where they wait is their problem, not yours.

55th St. and 12th Ave is just the motor vehicle entrance to the cruise terminal complex . From there your ride will proceed within the cruise terminal complex to the appropriate pier. The check in for Pier 88 is in Pier 88, Pier 90 check in is in Pier 90 (92/94 are almost never used). Sometimes people taking a metered taxi to the cruise terminal don't want the fare to be rolling up while the cab is making its way through traffic to the pier so they ask to be dropped off at the corner of 12th and 48th St. for Pier 88 or 12th Ave and 50th St. for Pier 90 and then cross the street to enter their specific pier. If you are playing a flat rate to a car service or Uber, or a private car is dropping you off then you don't have to worry about the fare running up so your ride can drop you directly at the cruise pier entrance doors.

When big ships are in port they commonly want car service pick ups to be done across the street on 12th Ave. or a nearby cross street. The cars that were being ticketed were likely sitting in a taxi stand or a no parking or no standing zone.

Thank you both.  Like getting dropped off at the appropriate airline.  Appreciate very much the info.  Thought of coming in at LaGuardia on Saturday, staying somewhere within a mile of the pier and taking a taxi in the am.  Appreciate the heads up on the running meter.  Uber or Lyft sounds like the answer.  Just need the XL because of 4 suitcases😊.  Probably will have more questions as time gets closer but again understanding a little better now.  Regards, Gerry.

Reread your comments on the harbor Princeton 123211,  wasn't Pier 54 Titanics arrival destination ?  Gerry.

Pier 54 was at that time Cunard's-- Carpathia ended her voyage there with Titanic's survivors but not before heading to Pier 59 which was Titanic's intended pier. Carpathia dropped off Titanic's lifeboats there (from which they disappear mysteriously into history) and then headed back to Pier 54 to disembark passengers/survivors.

Incidentally a few years later in 1915 Pier 54 was the departure point for the Lusitania's fateful voyage. After the Cunard/White Star merger the pier was used by both line's ships and the steel gantry that still stands (and is all thats left of the pier these days) you can still make out faintly "CUNARD WHITE STAR".
